10.27.2003 :: Oh, the weather outside was frightful...

Yesterday, that is. Well, it wasn't exactly frightful around here but it brought visions of Christmas to my head. It snowed. YIPPEEE! More on Christmas later...

Here's my progress on the BGJ bag. I was going to call it BJ bag. But, you can see the problems with that name. This yarn is wonderful and I just cannot wait to see it felted. And as an added bonus, when knitting a bag from the bottom up, I can keep the ball of yarn in the bag. Beautiful yet functional. Go figure! I'm not sure if I will have enough of this yarn to do the handles. Mull. Mull. What to do? A trip to my local yarn shop, of course. I"m sure I can find something companionable!

Here's some Debbie Bliss cotton denim aran that I have adopted. You may wonder why. This project has been stewing in my brain for awhile. While the Rowan denim is wonderful and available to be ordered from Cranberry Quilters, (which is also a yarn place) I figured I'd try this yarn on for size.

I hate to break it to you, but there are 2 months and 1 day to Christmas. It really does not leave much time for Christmas knitting. These 2 bags are my Christmas knitting. We'll see how that goes. Maybe it'll end up to be a felted Christmas this year. Did you start your Christmas knitting yet?

On the subject of spinning. Since there has been so much talk of it by former spin haters... I have a spindle full. Now what? I know. read the book! But, do you always have to ply it together? Or as my first spinning, do I leave it alone, shrinelike?

Friday! Enjoy it!

Hi Sandy! I'm against shrining. All it can do is sit around and look pretty. I'd ply it and knit a little something out of it. I knit a baby hat out of my first handspun and...gave it away! Sentimental I ain't. ;-)claudia

Like the others, I love your bag. I'm anxious to see it felted. I was feeling pretty smug about my Christmas knitting. I did four scarves and started on a set of throw pillows for a friend who just moved to a new house. So far, I have one pillow completed and the second one about 75% done. Still need to start on third one. And all three must travel across the world. Doubt they make the journey by Christmas but I'm knitting away hoping, hoping, hoping.Charlotte [ca 04@mindspring.com]

Hey Leigh, what you are really saying to me is....swatch. That is what I'll do, wash it and see what happens. Or maybe I'll just do as usual and go off half cocked and forge in. I'll let you know on measurments. Thanks...
Kerstin..how could I HATE you??? I'll be over. Have tea ready
Bron....Yes, Christmas? REmember that? Comes every year around the same time. We, as knitters can actually choose to knit something to give to someone. But we'd better LOVE that person a lot, because they may have a lukewarm response to the gift that half our soul is in and then said feelings would be hurt. And then we'd spend the rest of our natural life hating the relative/friend. Which would not be good. FAmily gatherings would become uncomfortable....er....um.....I mean...there's still time, go ahead and knit something for someone! heehee
Charlotte, You are the Christmas knitting queen. You go girl And I"d say that it is much better getting a hand knit gift late, than a store bought one on time. But maybe it's just me!
Marney, JOIN me! Come on over to the felting side. You'll like it. Fast and furious.
Chris....I believe shrining it will be the case. The first you know. There will never be another like my first!
Stonering... socks are not a fast gift. You think that they should be, but they end up taking so darned long. Fuzzy feet. That's the way to go! Fast and Furious! That's what we need for Christmas knitting. And plying....oy! I haven't even thought about doing that. I'll need some lessons. Oh, Kerstin????sandy [thehurley4@comcast.net]

yummy! That DB cotton is gorgeous! I wanted to make a sweater for my brother using it but the pattern called for some insane amount--like 27 balls. (can you believe the nerve of that Debbie Bliss?! )

I can't wait to see how your Tasha comes out--you might have to fiddle with some of the measurements since I don't think the DB shrinks like the rowan. I'll check out the patt and email you adjustments if you like :-)Leigh [leigh@woolflowers.net]

I love your bag. I have been inspired to make one of my own. It will be my first foray into felting. Very exciting.

Good luck on your new bag project. I have to say, I am seeing a trend in your projects....Marney [marnita@att.net]

I really like the bag Sandy. It's great. And the colors are much prettier on the large picture, on the first one I saw, when you were only a couple inches in to it, it looked mostly blue. Now all the color comes through much better for me.

I have done some holiday knitting. I've got another thing I need to start though. And I'd thought I was going to make socks for three or more friends. Oops. A little late for that. Maybe those will be February presents. Or June presents. :-)

My first hand supn, spouse and I wond in to a center pull ball and plyed to itself. Alternatively you could wind in to a ball (to free your spindle) and Navaho ply it, althoguh I haven't tried that on a drop spindle. I found my first spinning was much easier to work with plyed than as a single. The plying helped to stabilize the places where I'd ended up super thick or super thin.
