10.17.2003 :: Teen Heaven

It's an odd thing that Blog city advertises down time today and I have not seen it yet. So, I'll share. That will make it go down!

Look what's happening in the Hurley household!

Yes, that is Derek's "new" car. A 1991 Toyota Celica along with SWEET stereo system. (teen terms, not mother's standards!) The base cube fills the whole hatchback. Wow! My ears sting just thinking about it. I can feel the vibration inside the house. Luckily, we have a couple of week reprieve from the worrying. He does not as of yet have his license. November 1st, I believe will be the day. Do you remember how happy you were when you got your first car?? I do.

Here's a look at the mittens with Mountain Colors yarn, in ladyslipper shade. Mittens are fun! When closing the top, do you thread the yarn through all the live stitches and pull closed? Or do you kitchener? I pulled this one shut and then there was little unacceptable hole on the top, so I fudged some and I'm not too thrilled with the end result. Gotta figure it out for Mr. Thumb.

Happy Thanksgiving to all my Canadian Friends! I hope each and every one of you have lots of blessings to count!

If the mittens are simply for play and warmies, I pull the last 6 stitches. If the mittens are going to get heavy wear, I decrease down to about 8 stitches and kitchener. Depending on the gauge, I either kitchener thumbs or decrease down to one stitch, as those wear out first and pulling closed isn't as durable.

Lovely car. Do you get to borrow it?Sylvia

Carolyn, thanks for the advise! What a great idea to purl the last row! You'd better get knitting some yourself. Chicago has some purdy cold winters!
Kimmy, thanks.....and let's go on some mittens girl! :)
Ginny, the first car sure does bring back memories for me too. I see how proud he is on his face. What I see on my husband's and my face is pure terror. Kitchener is a good idea. I'm going to give it a try. Go Go on the MC mitts!
Bron....well....the only sage advice I can give right now is how to still stay standing while being worried sick. I'll be old hat at it by the time your angels are ready to drive. Stick around!
Debala! This mitten "recipe" is from my LYS. I have no idea where the original comes from, they just handed my a copy. Want one? email me your address and I'll mail you one! That alyson of yours wasted no time in lining up a beau! Good for her!

I have two boys just itching to become teenagers..and then to drive. Hopefully you'll still be around then to offer me sage advice. :)

LOVE the car! I'll bet that base rocks the neighborhood.Bron [graymist35@earthlink.net]

Wow... a NEW car! I can still remember my first car... it too was about 10 years old, but I loved it.

I Kitchener my mittens closed. Out of all the finishing techniques available, my strongest one is Kitchener. I have some MC left over from my socks--just enough to make my daughter some mitts. Good idea!Ginny [gareid@wightman.ca]

hey lady. i thread it through but i go all the way down to 4 or 6 stitches at the most. sometimes i also 1) thread it through them twice or sometimes 2) i purl the last row, then thread it through, the bumps kind of fill in the space. depends on the yarn, etc.carolyn [carolyn@prettyposies.com]
