05.31.2003 :: freaky friday!
I fancy myself a smart enough person. I did well in school. I like to learn new things. But the National Spelling Bee has my bonnet all in a twist! Take a look at the winning words since 1925. What the???!!! How many of these words have I ever heard of? Well, a couple. For instance, have you heard of the word succedaneum?? If you have, you get the smart award of the day. According to Dictionary.com, the definition of the word in all of it's forms, is "One who, or that which, succeeds to the place of another; that which is used for something else; a substitute; specifically (Med.), a remedy used as a substitute for another." okay. You are smarter now.
And I have used a spelling bee as a succedaneum to knitting content. You've been succedaneum-ed!

Pretty wild list of words, wow! Maks me feel kind of stoopid.
Have a terrific Friday! Breathe in that ocean scent for me, will you?

I like the way words get more and more esoteric (how's that for a good one?). I started at the top of the list thinking, "Hey I know most of these, they're not so bad." Then in the 90's they suddenly became a list of words that very few people (at least among my acquaintances) use or even know.Sarah [drummondnews@sympatico.ca]

Why is it that there are so many words never used, and so many things that need words that don't have them? The most basic example is love. Love for a person and love for a thing should be two different words. And there should be a name for that feeling that happens when you're on the home stretch in a knitting project and feel both sad that it's ending but anxious to get the next one ready. And... and.. I would like to know what becomes of these spelling bee champs. I hope that extra brain lobe serves them and the world well.Pioneer Melissa

As usual, Profound Pioneer has struck again. Sandy oh Sandy, yes, I'm planning on attending the Knitsmiths on Sunday. It's probably the only one this month I can attend. You know, me busy as a bee. I will dress like a hag ~ just for you.Kerstin
