02.01.2004 :: Mothers day thoughts, lessons learned and Suki!

Happy Mothers Day to all you mothers out there. You know who you are! Being a mother is by far the most rewarding, yet, most challenging job I have ever had. It is the most happy, angry, sad, frustrating, wonderful, proud, achingly horrible, worrisome, joyful experience of my life. If you have children, I'm sure that you could agree.

Here it is..... The Secret Suki! In all it's glory. I am almost done the body of the bag. I am using cascade 220. The real color stretch is the fuzz. It is purple. Does it go well? I think so. I'm not sure. I'll make my final decision when it's felted. I am obsessed with getting it done.

Here is an interesting thing taken from the Knit flame list that I thought you'd like to read. I found it amusing. And I quote,

"...."Why do you idiots read blogs? I can understand the egotistical
writers who
think their words are good enough to entertain the masses, but why
do you
stupid sheep read them? Don't you have thoughts of your own that you
want to
go peek in other people's minds? Sheesh! What a bunch of losers."

Interesting, isn't it, sheep? I say this as one sheep to another sheep. I joined the knitflame list at yahoo groups out of curiosity. And I have regretted it. It is like a train wreck. You don't want to look, but you find yourself fascinated and can't tear your eyes away from it. I will have to force myself to unsubscribe soon, as my blood pressure rises every time I "tune in".

I have finished the book, The Secret Life of Bees. It is one of the best books I have read in a while. Very touching, very enlightening. Would anyone care to read it? I can send it off. A book swap? And speaking of sending things.....I am involved in the "Great International Candy Exchange" with two bloggers from Canada. How exciting it that? I can tell you it was fun shopping for some candy that they "may or may not" have in Canada. The day came to mail off the packages, and, not having any boxes or packaging material, I went to Mailboxes Etc. BIG MISTAKE. I tell you this story, not to make the 2 recipients of the candy boxes feel bad, but to enlighten the masses, so to speak. Learn from my mistake! They packaged it up, weighed it, I filled out more forms than I ever thought necessary and then charged me $62.00!!!!!!! (Which, for you Canadians is 86 CAD, according to the exchange rate.) YIKES! I paid it in stunned silence (hard to believe) and walked out. I stewed on it for a day, and then checked into the postal rates. It should have cost me about $30 for both packages! Hey! I've been robbed! So, I call the good people at Mailboxes, Etc, just to see what's up. I explain to them the situation, and they proceed to tell me that being a private business, they can charge whatever rates they want to!!!! Oh my! You are KIDDING???!! Nope they are not kidding. Please do NOT go to Mailboxes , Etc to mail packages. Go to USPS! thank you for listening. And send money to.......OH, I"M ONLY KIDDING! My family can still eat this week and everything. NO big deal. Just the frugal Yankee in me is cringing!

Happy Mothers Day! Happy sunday! I must finish Suki!

Ayuh. You summed up my feelings about knitflame perfectly - a train wreck, and yet, once in a while i get sucked into reading it (I don't actually get the e-mails, I read it on the yahoogroups site).

Haven't they ever heard of "connection" or "community"? The reason I read blogs is that I am the ONLY knitter I know - I don't get encouragement or input anywhere else.

but then again, I'm "just a sheep" because I read what some call the "Knitlost" as well.

well, if they don't want to read blogs, it's their loss. *shrug*. I don't need to follow their rules or earn their validation to like myself. fillyjonk [ecorbett@netcommander.com]

Happy Mother's Day Sandy. Mailboxes Etc. does suck big time. I too am one of those lucky ones who found out the hard way. I'm finding now that UPS is getting to be cheaper than USPS, too. Check out their ground rates next time you ship. I am having a hard time getting a book read in order to start the Bees book. I'm thinking I need to just return this one to the library and get to Bees. We'll see. As far as knit blogging is concerned, I agree that I like the personal stuff (obviously since I don't even knit)!!!! Just keep on blogging, girl...Rene

Hey girls!
I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one to be burned by Mailboxes etc. Lesson learned.
You know, I see people that complain about blogs that include schtuff about life and I don't get it either. If a blog ONLY has knitting stuff, it gets kinds boring and monotonous, doesn't it? Unless the person is a knitting machine and getting projects finished and started left and right. I like my cocoon I've found here amongst you just fine, thank you. I don't think we are that baaaaaaaaaad, either.

That happened to me at mailboxes etc too when I mailed off my wedding bouquet to get it pressed--50 bucks!! (I paid in stunned silence too)
Oh well, I heard UPS bought out those stores and the shipping rates will be the same as if you were to go directly to a UPS shipping hub. Woo hoo!

BAAH BAAH!!!

Just call me a sheep. I guess there are some people out there that just don't find value in the thoughts and writings of other people. I doesn't surprise me. After all, there are a lot of people out there that can't see the world beyond their nose. I say, keep up the blogging and there will be people to read it.

Oh, and Suki looks great!Marney [marnita@att.net]

Happy Mothers Day, Sandy! Thanks for the heads up on Mailboxes Etc. What a giant rip! Re: that KnitFlame list. Unsubscribe now. I swear, they sound like the meanest, ugliest, stupidest shitheads on the face of the knitted earth. Have to run. Mother's Day baseball game. The fun never ends!Kerstin

I subbed to Knitflame for about 1 day and then decided I didn't need it in my life. I guess I can't understand why these people are so angry about everything. It takes so much more energy to be divisive and so less to be pleasant!
Happy Mom's Day to you tweety pie!

Hi Sandyangelo,
Your Suki looks fantastic. I love the colours. I guess with the postal rates and all, you won't be mailing it to me when it's felted. EEGADS. Criminal pricing there at Mailboxes Etc. Lordy. Live and learn.
Bah, bah, blogger, have you any wool,
Yes, m'am, yes, m'am, three bags full.
My favourite recent blog criticism that I read was one where the blogger said she hated any blogs that talked about anything more than the knitted project at hand. As if life is so neatly compartmentalized and nothing is connected. Me, I love the personal part of the blogs -- and of course, my nutty blogging pals. Bah Bah! Everybody now!Pioneer Melissa [pioneermelissa@sympatico.ca]

Happy Mother's Day!! May the kids allow you to knit as long as your heart desires!

What is up with that post in the knit flame? Sheeesh. Sheep? Oh please. We're not that baaaaaaaaaaaad. I've gotten more enjoyment out of you gals than I can express. So who is to knock it? Bizarre. I haven't subscribed to the list you speak of, and now I know I won't.

Yeah..Mailboxes Etc. Yikes. I found that out the hard way, too. They charge more for *everything*...stamps, even. Now they're the UPS Store, I believe. There is one just a few blocks away from my house, and when I feel the need to run my hands across some office supplies (which is often!), I can always pop in there and get my fix.

Secret Life of Bees? Book swap? I'm up for it---I'm making a swaplist of books to post on my site sometime this week. :)

Have a great day, sunshine! Your Suki is looking great!Kim
