06.25.2003 :: mice and bees........oh my!

We got a new mouse last night, thanks to Derek's new job. Computer mouse, that is. Not the furry, squeeky kind. He likes to splurge on things now that he has a steady source of income. I was not even aware that something was wrong with the last mouse! It makes me feel all clumsy this morning. There is a certain adjustment time to any new computer schtuff. I'm mourning the last mouse. I loved it well. It was so sudden!

The bumblebee sock is endangered again. I just can't seem to get it right. It now seems too small. Stinking bumblebees. Does anyone else knit with opal? How many cast on stitches do you use to knit a sock? I tried 72 before, too baggy. This time I tried 60, too small. So, they were the papa bear and the mama bear. Now I need the baby bear socks. JUST RIGHT! Well, just to be obvious, it will be between 60 and 72 stitches. DER. I just wish I could figure it out before I get a lot of progress done on the sock. I will pay my final respects to the sock tonight and start the ripping process. I give that job to Bethany, who seems to enjoy it a little too much! I can't bear to watch.

I have not ripped the 5 inches out of the I can smooch 2 tank yet. It's painful and I've avoided it for awhile. Maybe tonight. Maybe.

What a drag that the sock is too small now. Haven't you knitted with Opal before? I never have--but I have the skein that you sent me, and have it tagged for a pair of socks later this summer.

Ugh, 5" of ripping. Bless your heart. Im feeling your pain, hon. Maybe your Smooch can be a tunic tank?Kim [gibknits@earthlink.net]

Hey hon, I do 64 with Opal and that makes a snug sock, but not circulation-stopping. :) I do 64 usually because I do 2x2 ribbing, but on the body of the sock it usually turns out right. When I get home I'll look at my knit-to-fit pattern and send you the formula for figuring out cast-on stitches. :) And the websites for some spinning wheels and fiber..hehehehehe. Just kidding. ;)Daphne

Thanks, Daphne....about the sock, NOT the spinning sites! :)
Yes, Kim, that's the odd part. I have knit with opal. But only once. and one in the works, forever on hold. I'll figure it out. they will be the best darn bumblebees on the east coast! :)
JJ....no mouse name. Just in mourning. It was just all so sudden. I didn't even know it was sick! ha ha
Marney...good sock advice. Thanks!

Oh Sandy. Ripping out really sucks! I've done pretty well with the formula I found associated with the socka sock pattern - measure leg, check gague, multiply gague by leg inches, then subtract 20% for stretch and stay-uppedness. But most of my socks are still on needles not on my legs, so I don't have much of a leg (ahem) to stand on.

Go work on something easy and fun for a few days then come back to the other things. :-)

The beauty of socks is you can totally tweek the pattern to make if it. You don't have to go in certain increments in order to make it work out well. If the sock fit closer to the larger size, reduce a couple of stitches (if it's 2X2 ribbing, reduce by 4 - 68 stitshes). If the sock fit better on the smaller size, add a couple of stitches (64 stitches). When you get to the heel, have the fewer/extra stitches on the instep and use whichever size was closer as the heel directions. I hope that made sense.

Good luck.Marney [marnita@att.net]
