06.20.2003 :: good book day

Yesterday, Oprah announced that she is starting up her book club again. While I did not like every book she had chosen in her previous book club, I adored some of the books. Her new choice is one of my ABSOLUTE favorite books of all times by my absolute favorite author! East of Eden by John Steinbeck! If you have not read this book and are looking for a summer book, buy it now. After she announced on her show the title of the book, I went upstairs to my book shelf, found my old copy of the book, dusted it off and plan to read it again.

And with the excitement of the 5th Harry Potter book coming out this week, I found a fun link to find out what house in Hogwartz you would be assigned to. Would the sorting hat put you into Griffindor, or the dreaded Slytherin?? Go find out! http://harrypotter.warnerbros.com/personalization/pp_gryffindor.html click on "Hogwartz, enroll and be sorted". I was assigned to Griffindor! phew! I'm a little worried, though, as Bethany got into Slytherin. The sorting hat must have heard her "old people" comment!

I was a little distressed to hear that a main character will be killed off in the new book. I hope it's not Ron Weasley or Hermione. How could she??

I have to admit that I have not finished the 4th book yet. So, I'll get busy reading that one because Bethany the Slytherin will get to the 5th book first! So, my summer reading plate is full. How about yours? Oh, when will I find the time to knit too?? Something's got to give.....I guess it'll be lots of pizza delivery for the family!

Well, Sandy, it looks like you and I are in the same house. Go Gryffindor!!! I can't wait until my copy of the book gets here this weekend. I have a feeling that it will be delivered when I'm not home and I'll have to wait until I can pick it up later on.

I'm with you on East of Eden. My book club is actually reading some good quality books this summer. It looks like Catch-22 is up for next month. How much do I love that!!!Marney [marnita@att.net]

Maybe you can put the pizza man on retainer. ;)

I've not read any of the Harry Potter books, but Michael has devoured them. They have been the only books that I haven't had to practically force him to read. I found him upstairs in his bedroom once, READING! What?! It was pretty cool to see. Have fun with East of Eden, too. Great movie, but I haven't read the book. I need to get it---we could have a read-along--the book is always better than the movie, isn't it?Kim [gibknits@earthlink.net]

I love East of Eden too - great, great book.
I thought maybe Dumbledore would be the one to bite the dust in this HP book. Not because Richard Harris died - just because it would be very dramatic if he died. I hope it's not Hagrid. I know I'll be in tears no matter which one of them it is. Can't wait for the book!Kathy [kathy.wortel@sympatico.ca]

I love East of Eden - it is my favourite of all the Steinbeck books I have read. I may have to dive under the stairs and dig it out myself. And we are anxiously awaiting the fifth Harry Potter. I've read the first four aloud to my girls. Canada Post is doing a special Saturday delivery of copies ordered online. Yay! How often can you cheer for the post office?Sarah [sarah@drummondnews.ca]
