06.19.2003 :: Board the tour bus

Here's your ticket, please move to the back of the bus so that everyone will have a place to sit.

Okay. I think everyone is here, we can begin. Welcome to the bus tour of Sandy's walking route of Beverly, Massachusetts.

As you can see from the sign, Beverly is the home of George Washington's Naval Base. Located on the coast of Massachusetts, it is neighbors with the famous witch town, Salem.

As we start our journey, we go down Beverlys main st, Cabot Street.

Downtown Beverly is an eclectic mix of small businesses and shoppes. The embracing of the art college has brought a plethora of new, funky businesses into town, such as the Atomic coffee shop, Kame, the Japanese restaurant and a vegetarian restaurant.

As we continue down Cabot Street we come to City Hall and the Police station, nestled closely to each other.

And here, on your right, most likely the highlight of this trip, not a half a mile from Sandy's home, is the best shop in town.

The Abbot Yarn Shoppe. A staple in downtown Beverly for many years, they offer a wide variety of yarn choices and support all in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. They are usually closed during Sandy's walk, but it doesn't matter as just passing by brings the joy of yarn through the walls.

Now we head on down towards the beach. Here are 3 shots spanning Beverly Harbor.

As you can see, at the left of the harbor, the pristine image is somewhat clouded by a big water rig. They are laying down pipes for natural gas and thankfully are only passing through.

A little further down, here is the beach of Dane Street Beach. At low tide, you can see that our coastline is quite rocky so be sure to wear your beach shoes while taking a dip! You will need them!

As we leave the beach behind us, we come to Beverly Common. The gazebo and gardens set a nice relaxing mood to sit on one of the many benches to relax. In the distance, you can see the Beverly Public Library.

what a pretty time of day to be finishing up our tour. Dusk surely has a way of making the everyday magical, doesn't it? Look at the gazebo in the shadows, pretty isn;t it?

As we near Sandy's home, we see Dane Street church, which is just across the street from her home.

And as we round the back of the church, we can take a peek at the Hurley home. Yes, that's right, there it is, Sandy's home. See it back there? It's actually red, white and blue. Unintentional, of course!

see it, red roof?

Well, thank you for joining us for the Beverly tour! I hope you get to visit someday in person!

Sandy, Thank you for the tour of my Grandmother's hometown! She was born there in 1923. I believe her family moved away when she was 4 or 5, what fun to see what it is like. I will have to come tour myself next time I find my self in Braintree (her home when she passed away last month). After seeing your pictures I now know why Grandma loved it so much. Thank you!Alissa [alissa@knittingfairy.com]

Did I tell you we have a good friend in Beverly? Yup, I usually don't admit that in public but I'll make an exception today just for YOU. He lives close to town, too. In fact, we may be up your way in a couple weeks 'cause he bought a boat and wants to take us all out. Such a small world. Such a big ocean. ;) Kerstin

Sandy, that was great! What a quaint little town. I love the buildings, the beach, the harbor, and your house! The color is great. Lucky lucky girl, living near the ocean like that. You're livin' my life, honey! ;) Thank you so much for the tour, I'll be thinking of the ocean all day.Swooning Gib [gibknits@earthlink.net]

What a wonderful tour of your town! I've been there once, many years ago... I loved the quaint, pretty streets and buildings. Rings of Stephen King's Castle Rock, in a way... but in a good, nostalgic kind of way.Ginny [gareid@wightman.ca]

It is always so nice to see how other people live. You and I have such a different home environment. Thank you for your "walking" tour. It was a great treat to get out of the City for a while.Marney [marnita@att.net]

Holy moley. I can't get your site to load for one day and everything goes to hell in a handbag. I'm not talking about your tour. That is wonderful (thank you!). I'm talking about the Queen. Of Canada. i.e. MOI. That's french for 'me'. I AM THE QUEEN OF CANADA. How many times do I have to say this. I let that other chick appear on our money because I like to keep a low profile. I let her cut the ribbons at ceremonies because I hate to waste perfectly good ribbon like that. You get the idea. And don't worry about doing a curtsey every time I visit your site. I know you adore me.

Gee, what a lucky gal! Not only a quaint town, but knitting shop to boot! I would take you on a walk of my area but it is the run of the mill sub-division! Maybe I will do a few of the sights around town!
