09.30.2003 :: Providence and knitting
Last week I started an Alpha course. It is a program sponsored by my church (which I admit to having not attended in quite a while!) to explore your Christian Faith. Exploring is good. I knew ahead of time that we would be watching a movie, then discussing. I went prepared. "Does anyone mind if I am knitting through the movie?" I asked. I like to ask out of politeness, especially for the leader of the group. I don't know what I would do if someone ever answered, "yes, I mind". I'd probably pack up and go home, haha! The Pastor says, "Oh, great! You can sit with Marcy (his wife) and knit together!" Did I just hear this right? I have stumbled across another knitter?? Talk about heaven! It was the greatest evening of companiable knitting. She was working blocks of squares to make blankets for all of her children. (5 of them, grown) She would incorporate the most wonderful pictures into the block, all meaningful to their lives. A beautiful angel, a dog to look like their long time pet, stars in the sky, a polar bear(?? I didn't ask....) It was beautiful and touching.
Don't you just love it when you meet a fellow knitter? A chance meeting? Serendipity? Perhaps....
Inishmaan sleeve update, I'll spare you the picture. It looks a lot like the first, thankfully! I am doing the increases and have done about 28 rows. And, by the way, Bron, I can hear some chanting, GO Inishmaan, Go Inishmaan. But, I thought it was just me! :)
Thursday already. To me Thursday = buffalo chicken salad lunch. Every week. Rain or shine. Spices up my life! Bring it on!

I've been thinking about that Alpha course for a while - has it helped you with your faith (for the classes you've taken so far)?
BTW, that yarn is beautiful!Cyndilou

Ooh, buffalo chicken salad!
I know what you mean about it being fun to meet another knitter. My church just started a knitting & spirituality group (where you knit and listen to readings and such)... it sounds really neat but I wasn't able to make it to the first meeting. When I saw the notice about it, I had that same feeling you are talking about.
I'd love to see Inishmaan when you finish, it's on my "really want to knit" list.rebecca

If I could just get away with knitting during Sunday morning sermons - now that would be Heaven!Marie [marieedmondson@yahoo.com]

Thank goodness you finally hear the chanting! That means I can quit cheerleading. Trust me - that itty-bitty skirt is NOT a good look for me... although hubbie was intrigued by the pom-poms. TeeheeBron [graymist35@aol.com]

I've led the Alpha course at our church for several years and I always take knitting, both for my enjoyment and because the clack of the needles seems to relax the guests. For the past few courses, I've made a pair of socks that ends of going to one of the guests I have felt a particular connection with. And several have gotten turned onto knitting as a result! Keep it up!Anita [anitasor@pacbell.net]
