09.24.2003 :: Back in the saddle again

What I did this weekend, besides knitting. No, I did not play football. This picture is of particular interest to me because this is a football game between my old town high school and my new town high school. Gardner vs. Beverly. The classic matchup. Beverly won, by the way. Good karma there. Both of these high schools have orange and black as their school colors.

Here's the real reason I attended the football game.

both of my kids are in the Beverly High School Band. I have to admit to shedding some tears everytime I hear them play the marching music. Why? I don't know, really. They just make me so proud.

Knitting? Sure....I did lots. Too much maybe, because my hands ache today. But with all the knitting I've done, that poor sleeve is moving at a turtle's pace. Here it is, with it's newly knitted saddle.

One more inch to go on saddle knitting. Who knew you could knit a saddle?

And in the I must have my head examined category,

this is the saxon braid scarf from The Handbook of Aran Sweater Design. I will be wearing a knitted scarf this winter. I am using Alpaca yarn and it is the yummies, softest yarn that could be.

Have a good Monday.

My school colors were orange and black, too! There, now you know *everything* there is to know about me. Lucky you. ;)Kerstin

Congrats to Beverly for whooping up on Gardner. I know what you mean about tearing up when you watch your kids in the band. When I see Michael all dressed up, looking sharp & playing his tuba my eyes fill up, too.

Ah, so *that's* a saddle. I think I get it now. Man, that's a lot of work, this Inishmaan. It's really going to be beautiful, Sandy. And that scarf--wonderful! You really enjoy Aran knitting--and you're good at it! I've never done an Aran pattern before, but this is tempting me.Kim [gibknits@earthlink.net]

thank you, Kim....you are so good for my ego. I forgot that Michael played the tuba. I wonder where my memory has gone to..
Chris, I'll be darned if I can figure out how to get it on the horse!
Beth, here's to the band geeks of the world! They rock....pun intended!
Brooks...Drum major, eh? You went right to the top! Does he still try to conduct at home? just wondering what drum majors do with all that skill. And thank you for the nice words!
Dava, I knew you would like the scarf! I'm a scarf girl! and I'm tone deaf too. But I can enjoy the band!
Leigh, this blog brought to you by the letter A. I'll be glad to see how the saddle sews up too. I'm a saddle virgin also.
Bron baby, a natural at cabling? Well, just call me the Cable Gal. If I can do cables, anyone can! And vines is a cable, isn;t it? And look at the great job you've done! You are a cable gal too! :)
Thanks everyone!sandy [thehurley4@comcast.net]

Beautiful cabling! You must be a natural. And so brave to do those saddle sleeves (for some reason they intimidate the heck outa me). I can't wait to see Inishmaan in all its glory. Great scarf too - lovely pattern.Bron [graymist35@aol.com]

Alpaca--that's the word of the day at Noel's preschool--and the sound of the week is "A!" (Don't you know, I included some alpaca yarn for Noel to show his class.) Your sleeve and saddle--fabulous! I'm interested in seeing how the saddle sews up--Cromarty has one if I remember correctly--all new to me.Leigh [leigh@woolflowers.net]

If you have to have your head examined, at least you can wrap it up in that gorgeous scarf! I am working on a grey alpaca scarf for my husband, but only in non-adventurous stockinette. Never was in band--tone deaf--but orange and black is the coolest!Dava [davamunn@rcn.com]

Heehee--I married a band geek--the drum major, actually! I'm a band groupie I guess.

And that's nice aran stitchwork--on the sweater and the scarf. Can't wait to see how it progresses!Brooks [brooks7@earthlink.net]

Pretty sadle but how does it stay on the horse? Love the braidy thing there.

Aw, Sandy! I too was a Band Geek for my first two years of high school. (Eventually I got sick of playing in the cold/wet weather, not to mention the whole football aspect of it.) We were the Tiger Marching Band and had orange and black uniforms which dated from my parents' time at the high school. Whee!Beth S. [sundheim@fas.harvard.edu]
