05.18.2004 :: I'm stuck in the web
Charlotte.

Charlotte's meagher beginnings
I believe, to quote Charlotte's words, "I'm done for". I tried 3 times to do the next row and I have an extra stitch. I can't figure it out and it is frustrating me. There?are a couple of mistakes so?I am thinking that it would be good if I took her apart and started over. I hate to do it, but...what must be, must be.
I am quite nervous about the pattern too. I am a visual kind of gal and the pattern stops at row 50, with 100 more to be had. Instructions say to continue. I'm not sure I can. I wish they charted out the whole pattern.
Yes, that's right! This is Monday Morning complaint time. Anything else Not that I can think of right now.
Almost done with the anniversary hat.

20th anniversary, warm heads?
It has a bucket hat type flair at the edge, doesn't it
happy monday to you!

I, too, was concerned about the chart ending at row 50. What I did was remember that you're knitting the same 8 (or 16) rows over and over. So, on my photocopy of the chart, I wrote in the row numbers above 50 next to the row numbers 27-42... For example, next to row 27 on the chart, I have written "59, 75, 91, 101, etc." as you will be doing the same thing for these rows (just a few more repeats in between). Also, you've probably figured this out already, but the row number corresponds with the number of stitches on each side of the center stitch. I count after *every* row. It's a pain in the butt, but it truly is a time-saver. If you miss a stitch and don't realize it until the next pattern row, you'll end up tinking a lot of work. Good luck! It really is a fun shawl to knit, I think... Can't wait to see everyone's finished shawls! p.s. I want to join you Charlotte knit-along with my next one! :)Jen L [monkeyknits@yahoo.com]

Hi, Count me in on the Charlotte's knit-a-long. I started a week or two ago and though I have now finally made it to row 50 or so. I think I've got the hang of it now (crosses fingers, crosses legs, crosses eyes, etc I thought I was going mad it was driving me so crazy - a missing stitch, an extra stitch -ggggh!My troubles mainly come from missing yo and forgetting to passover the psso. So I count and I count and I count religiously and USE MARKERS. I got that hint from the link Black Dog mentioned as a good tutorial for Char. And panic for a while but you WILL be able to knit the whole thing without the chart - It's the same 16 rows over and over again - you just add another 2 pattern repeats at each end on Row 17 which is still just basically Row 1 except you've thrown in two repeats. I'm sure you'll get it - hang in there - it will make sense - I didn't think it would but eventually your mind processes the idea. As for missing yo and psso, that I will have to continue working on. Good luck.Martha [m2hochman@aol.com]

I'm caught in the web. I was in WA and asked for the pattern at several shops to no avail. In one, after finding the pattern was unavailable, I was browsing the yarn when, behold, a pattern fell from a higher yarn bin, brushing against my face and landed on the floor. Charlotte's Web from heaven! Nobody there believed it but they gladly accepted the money. More than coincidence? I'm hoping nobody left it by accident while looking for the Koigu that the store doesn't even sell. I consider myself lucky. Count me in.

I love your Charlotte so far. I kept having the same problems with mine when I first started knitting it. I did a hints blog back on the 5th that may help. It's really fairly easy once you get into the pattern. Good luck!Christina [seastorm2@yahoo.com]

Stitch markers work really great. It's lots of markers but one every 8 stitches. Then if you goof up, you can count each section. Ask Mary Beth if she likes the reference chart I sent her. I'm not sure if it's of any help to anyone but me but I blogged about it yesterday (Sunday). I'll be glad to share it if you think it might help.Uli [uliross@shaw.ca]

I'm hoping to join you all if Rob can put together a colorway. One way to keep track of your pattern is to put a stitch marker at every repeat. Then you'll know if and where you make a mistake just by counting between the markers.margene [zeneedles@yahoo.com]

Mary Beth is wise. Definately compare both sides - I found a few mistakes that way. I found that typically, I had left out or added a yarn over.
As for the chart ending at row 50, don't worry - by that time, you'll be in the swing of the pattern, and all you are doing is added a new lace repeat at both sides every 16 rows. You can just look at the lower part of the chart to see how to start the new lace repeats.Gail [gail@houseofcritters.org]

OHH NOOO!!! Trouble in web-land!! Stay calm. I've had lots of back-tracking because of an extra or short stitch. Lay it flat and compare the sides. Start at the ends (or in the center- your preference)and go stitch by stitch and I bet you can find the mistake (almost all of mine are on the left side, for some reason - guess I get cocky.) Then rip one stitch at a time to get to the mistake, fix it, finish the row, put it down and pour yourself a glass of wine. See -this is going to be a really fun knit-along!! In the beginning it's like two steps forward, one back! We'll get there! I figure I'll have this pattern down, by, say, row 100!Mary Beth [irwinmb@sbcglobal.net]

Oh, this is encouraging. You guys are having trouble with this pattern, and you expect ME to be able to knit it, too? HA! ;)Kim [gibknits@earthlink.net]

Sandy, I'm about at the same spot on my CW and also contemplating ripping. I have one less stitch than I should~ I think I forgot a yo somewhere (hopefully on the row I am on now). It takes constant counting on my part. Something that helped me is putting in markers around the lace pattern AND a different color one at the center stitch.
I was also confused about the chart and what we do after row 50. Calling for help, Mary Beth!!!Annie
