09.20.2004 :: The needy

DSC03552.JPG
I've seen warnings on the difficulties of photographing black yarn
But you never believe something until it happens to you. You treat it like folk lore. Well, I'm here to say, it's true.
Crappy photo aside, there is a problem and I'm here asking, neigh, begging for advice.
Problem: glove too big/baggy. Cuff is perfect (see yesterday's post to get you up to speed about small hands)
Possible solution number 1: Rip That's the obvious one. Which is closely followed by it's sister, Redo. Rip and Redo are like Siamese twins. Or the more Politically correct name, conjoined.
Possible Solution number 2: Some wonderful knitter, also known here as Super Knitter, will swoop in and tell me a yarn about using alpaca before and it shrinks a wonderfully appropriate amount. To leave it and knit happily on, shrinking it into submission when done.
Possible solution number 3: Bethany will grow some man hands
What does it all mean?
Yeah, well, I'll probably be ripping later today. Join me? Or save me with the info I need.
I'm feeling needy today!

Hey Sandy! I just experienced this exact problem with a pair of gloves I was knitting. I could not bring myself to R&R (rip and redo) It was my first glove and it was perfect all except for the fact that it was way to large in circumference. I felted that bad boy forgetting that yarn of any kind shrinks more in length than it does in width. Since the glove was already perfect in length after 5 minutes in the washer it was to short and still to big around. I cut the felted glove up and used it to wrap darning needles in. It's cute and my needles won't rust but... it's not a glove! Rip your glove! I promise you'll be glad ya did!

I vote for a conjoined glove. If that's any help. ;) (Thanks for the giggles today. This was a fun post!)

My vote is for rip & redo. You knit so quickly you'll have that mitten/glove redone in no time!

Com'on over this morning and we'll spend the day knitting! xxoo

Make me laugh how you have recognized Rip and Redo. : )

I think you should "lightly" felt. It would make a perfect, soft, slightly more dense and lovely-fitting glove. You can control how much you felt, especially with a small item like a glove, and a fingerless one at that -- just stop it when you feel it's right. It would be custom-fitted.

Rip it Sandy. C'mon. You're tough.

By the time you do all that you could just rip and re-do. Oh I have so been there.

Alpaka will felt, as long as it's a large persentage of alpaka. Which I believe you have. I can't tell you how much it felts, you may want to knit a swatch and measure it, then felt it and remeasure. See if you can felt it to the right size before you go rip and redo everything! Hope to felts to the perfect size.
