10.29.2004 :: Little thrums all in a row

Okay, mittens. line up. It's time to take attendance. Please raise your hand if you are here.
~Blackberry Mitten!
~Here!

~Where is your thumb?
~Yeah, funny story. The chart for the thumb is no where to be found. Organization is not our strongest suit.
~Thrummed Mitten?

~president!
~There's always one in the crowd. Where is your thumb, thrum?
~I have it now. Just not at the photo time.
~Good. I guess there will have to be some thrum wrestling to neaten up those llama tufts.
~Whatever!
~ Homespun mitten?

~Not here anymore. Soon to be recreated. It's not good to be baggy mittens. That's not a good look for anyone.
-------------
I told you of this mitten obsession.
It's time to tell one of my dirty little secrets. Leigh knows it. She could have outed me. But she is a friend like this. She guarded the info closely.
I Don't Swatch.
Okay, sometimes I swatch. But most of the time, not.
Why?
Well, because of the positive reinforcement thing.
I don't swatch, it works, the natural conclusion is that I don't NEED to.
And mostly this theory works. Especially for the small stuff. The socks, the scarves, the shawl. Not the sweater. Never the sweater. Can't leave that to chance.
But how about the mitten? Nope. Didn't swatch. The result? One blackberry mitten that is too narrow. I can wear it. But my fingers have no room to move. Possibly it will stretch a bit. But probably not. I can live with it.
However, it's not my dream mitten.
Sigh.

Another non-swatcher. Kind of. I don't do REAL swatches, where it's a nice-sized bit of knitting with a proper border, blocked appropriately and measured exactly. I just kind of start swatching, then get bored, measure, decide it's good enough, and go. And swatch colorwork? You gotta be kidding me. I'd rather just wing it and hope it comes out correctly. (Luckily, it almost always does.)

I love the Bluberry mitten.
So do you think you are going to swatch from now on? I never swatch for socks, scarves. Big stuff...yes. Little stuff...no!

um, yeah I dont swatch for little things...and my very good friend now makes me swatch for sweaters. Good thing... but I do so love the thumbless posse of mittens.

:)

Well, since you came out, I might as well say I don't swatch either! (it gets me in a lot of trouble sometimes, but what dahey, sometimes it saves time, yaknow?)

Those mittens are gorgeous. Can you block the heck out of the blackberry ones? And your handspun yarn==yum!

I never swatch for small items like socks or gloves. It's too easy to make adjustmetns as you go. When you use two colors it is so easy to make the object too small!! That's the problem with my red and white glove.
The Thrum's are very cool.

I never swatch for mitten either. Love that blackberry mitten. I might have to order that one. Hope they find their thumbs. :)

I only swatch for the important stuff too. But then again I kinda dive into life the same way. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the picture of the moon. I was looking forward to seeing the eclipse, had my blanket ready, threatened the neighbors so that they wouldn't turn their outside lights on and...the entire sky was covered with clouds and fog so I got to see nothing :( But thanks to your photo, I can now stop pouting :)

Mittens are looking lovely! Too bad about the homespun one. I can't wait to see one of those thrummed mittens in person. You'll have to bring it to Knitsmiths sometime! PS-I too am not a swatcher. It's okay, you're not alone! :)

Your mitten projects are lookin' good girl! I love the colors of your homespun yarn. The mittens will be beautiful. I just finished my first pair of mittens on Monday and love them. I am ready to start more. You are definitely an "enabler". Swatching - I live dangerously - unless it is a sweater and then I use the Philosopher Wool advice. Make the sleeves first and check gauge.

Hey, try that pattern for the K1 P1 ribbed mittens for your handspun. It makes a nice stretchy, fitty-mitty. You'll love it. (your post is so cute! take attendance!)

Are the berry mittens from the Mitten Book? You're inspiring me to make some :-D

As to swatching, I don't do it either, unless you consider a small piece to check gauge "swatching". At least that's what I'm thinking of. I can't imagine doing a whole hunka piece of knitted work and it not being a part of a sweater. But I like to live dangerously. And the only time I do the gauge check is if it's an ordered sweater that someone is paying me to do.

I don't swatch for mittens either. I just make them, look at the size and THEN decide who it is for. Of course I don't ADVERTIZE this up front - I act like it was for that person all along! Isn't that a clever little game I play?
