02.21.2005 :: What would you do? *
* title stolen from Annie's post of the other day!
If, in the corners of your imagination, you get a call at 3:30 am saying that your son is in the Emergency Room of the hospital closest to his college, what do you imagine yourself doing?
~keeping calm, getting the facts
~getting hysterical
or
~sleeping through the call.
I always imagined myself as the keeping calm type. I've done it before through motherhood crises. I'm rather good at them. I save the falling apart until later. When the time has past.
There was a call in my home at 3:30 am from the ER.
What did I do?
I SLEPT THROUGH THE CALL.
We have a new phone system and I knew it would not ring upstairs. But I thought if the phone rang during the night, I would be able to hear it no matter what. I thought wrong.
I slept though it.
Until Andy announced around 8 am that there was a message on the phone.
And let me just take this opportunity to publicly state my objections against the privacy act. Hipaa, for those in the know. While I certainly see it's place in the medical field, what I know is that my son is in the ER 40 miles away from here and they won't tell me why. Not to mention the snowstorm going on.
Car accident?
Injury?
appendix?stroke?heartattack?suicide???? the list is endless, isn't it?
But this is a college student and the most obvious answer is drinking.
Yes, he got rip roaring drunk and fell down on his walk back to the dorm. Picked up by the police, given a ride in an ambulance to the ER, where he was IV'ed and watched over.
Poor baby.
Stupid ass.
Poor baby.
He's sleeping it off now.
I hope I can sleep it off too. Is there any IV I can take for the grey hair?

Kids! Aren't they grand?! Will there be anything of me left over once they are raised?! I think not! Hugs to you!

Sandy, college students do some dumb things when alcohol is involved. I know that first hand because I did some dumb things. And I can promise you he will not do it again! And you are right about HIPPA. It is a pain in the you know where. The sad thing is that most of the time, hospitals and such do not fully understand the rules because they are either too complicated or vague. I know from running calls that you have to sign one for the EMTs, one for the medic, and than another one at the hospital. And we are supposed to get them signed on every call. The rule was a great idea but it was not implemented well.

Ah yes, the joys of having a child in college, I know it well . . .

I suspected too, when reading your post it was alcohol related. I hope you are doing okay. I guess it's not uncommon...but I am glad he is okay. It is probably for the best that you slept through the mess.

Oh boy, Sandy! As I say, "Congratulations, it's a boy!" My time is coming and I don't look forward to it.

How funny. That is prety stupid that they can't tell you anything about what happened, although you know they have good intentions. Glad he's ok.

Last spring I got a call from the mall police that my youngest son was very drunk please come and get him. When we got there, he was so very very sick, that I asked the police if they thought I should take him to the ER. They said a resounding yes! He too, was placed on an IV and watched for hours, while I stood right there and held his hand tightly the whole time. Unfortuneately, alcohol poisoning is a real possibility that many people don't think of.
And then there's the time my oldest son was away at college and went to the ER with chest pain, and was admitted for days with some kind of carditis (I forget now) and I found out about it days later! They didn't want to worry me.....
Every time my daughter does my hair, I ask her if there's any gray......
Boy, do I know how it is, Sandy!

Here's another mother saying that I'm glad you slept through. After all...he did!
(psst...how's your time off so far?)

As soon as I read your son was in the hospital, I figured that was the case. At least he stayed in the hospital. There was a guy from my school, who, over D-Days (homecoming) weekend, got plastered and was taken to the hospital to have his stomache pumped. Of course, he wasn't going to stay in the hospital over D-Days. He broke out of the hospital (in his gown, as I understand it) and went out and got drunk again. And ended up back in the hospital to have his stomache pumped again. He stayed that time.
And I agree--it was just as well that you slept through it. It was good for him!

What a story! He actually passed out as he was *walking* back to his dorm? Too funny. And, I agree with Norma too~ thankfully it was nothing worse. Poor Mom.

I'm with Norma - it's probably best that you did sleep through it, if that's all it was.
Also, I can't help but laugh. Poor guy. Stupid guy, but poor guy.

My sister was in an accident while in college, pre-Hippa, and the hospital and police still wouldn't tell my parents what had happened and she was 17...plus they withheld treatment until they got there (hospital was 50-70 miles away)!! I think they just like to make people sweat...

I'm with Norma. I'm an old meanie too.
Posted by: claudia on 02.21.2005 AT 02:39 PM
Oh, Sandy! Well, at least it's nothing more serious, and frankly, if it was that -- it's almost poetic justice that you DID sleep through it! ;-) (I'm a tough old meanie, aren't I?)
Posted by: Norma on 02.21.2005 AT 02:33 PM
Oh Sandy, how heart-wrenching to get a call like that! Just to read your story. I hope he remembers just enough of the whole experience to never do it again. Good kids do make mistakes and I guess nowadays we just have to hope they survive those mistakes so they can learn from them. Best wishes and hugs to all of you!
