04.14.2005 :: Go eat your veggies!

"Step away from the twinkie!"
I have been tossing this entry around in my brain for at least a week now. Did you ever stop to consider if something is Blogworthy? Should I write about that? That has been my dilemma all week.
So, here goes. We'll see how blogworthy this topic really is.
~~
Most people use an emotional crutch. It would be wonderful if we all were able to stand up on our own 2 feet and not lean on anything. But that would make us super human. And not very interesting, I'm sure. Some people turn to alcohol, others, drugs. Speeding cars, manic exercise, shopoholics. We could go on naming them until the cows come home. And believe me, the cows are NOT coming home!
For me? It's food. It has been my best friend for a long while. Until all of a sudden, I have hit the magical number 43, or something, I really can't keep up with my age all of a sudden and I am more roly poly than ever. I am tired all the time. It is not good.
There is a solution of course. For me that is Weight watchers. I joined a week ago today. And I have never been more happy.
So, I'm all about portion control, whole, healthy, non processed foods, whole grains, lots and lots of veggies and fruits. Oh, and water. Lots o' water. It doubles as an exercise activity with all the quick trips to the ladies room! :)
I'm starting to feel better already. The human within is starting to emerge. What are the chances that I lost 50 pounds this week?
Fat chance!
But you and I know how fast the weeks roll by.
I am determined to do this. Health is good! I'm worth it. Any others to add?
Hey, thanks for listening once again. You really are the best. The thing that I love about this little world called blogland? Is that many people show their human side. And it becomes apparent that we are all in this together.
So, raise a carrot stick with me.
Here's to good health!

Good for you for joining WW. Losing the extra weight will be a big difference. Other things you should look for when you buy food is make sure there aren't a lot of preservatives or colors, with as few chemical names as possible. Also, look for the fat, cholesterol and sodium levels on the nutritional panels. Portion control is, I believe, the most important thing, so don't feel like you can't eat the chocolate cake, just not as big a piece! Lastly, do some type of physical activity after meals for at least 30 minutes. Good luck with the weight loss!

Sandy...I have never met a bag of cheetos that didn't 'make me happy...which is why I have proudly been a Weight Watchers Lifetime Member three different times in 24 years! The program works, then works again, and again! Good luck!

Yay WW! I lost 25 using WW online 3 years ago. As of Tuesday, I'm back on program to drop what I regained and continue to my goal. And I'm with you on the water - I lost track of how many times I walked to the restroom at work today.

Hi, Sandy. Came this way via a Yarn Harlot link, and read your post from today. I lost 60 pounds, and have kept it off for the past four years. I have never felt better in my life. Everything you're about to go through is so worth it. If I could do it, so can you. I even can be thin and have a food blog! Weight Watchers is a great way to go. I truly wish you the best of luck.

Hurray for you, Sandy!!! Best wishes to you on your weight loss adventure!

Great Sandy! Never give up!! I lost 23 kilos 2 years ago and have been keeping this weight! You have received a lot of support (at least through your blog) but let me tell you something: many people will feel unconfortable with the fact that you're getting slim... keep the focus!

WW is great! I started after my 2nd kid was born, then got my mom and sister started. My mom had never lost an ounce in her life and lost 30 lbs! I lost 35 (some of it baby weight, some if it was mine!) and sis lost 2. We all feel much better and look better too. So stick with it--WW is a great plan and has lots of support. I cannot wait to see your after pictures!

I'm so grateful you talked about WW. It was just what I needed to get this body on the scale and face reality. I made it through the first day and am off to a good start. Please check in with us once a week!!!

Have you tried walking whilst knitting a pair of socks? It's easy but pick a flat, safe route.
Posted by: travelita on 04.15.2005 AT 03:27 AM
My mom lost over 80lbs almost two years ago with WW and has kept 75 of them off. I think that it's a great program. Good for you to start taking care of yourself. The kids are grown, now it's your turn.

Good for you! I've worked with WW for 12 yrs now and have seen many people lose their weight and keep it off including my self it really isn't a diet but rather a lifestyle change. That is the 1st step to success. Love your blog! Anne

I'm a member of ww also, have been for ages (online, just carried on with the subscription), but am a lapsed ww! Not only a year older than you, but I gave up smoking 10 weeks ago and the weight has piled on! I am in denial, and still knitting for the smaller me! I'm very happy being at the curvier end of normal (not destined to ever be skinny) but need to lose the excess gain from giving up smoking. Good luck!

I definitely wonder about blogworthiness. I think this topic is for sure. I've heard great things about WW and actually my aunt gave me the week one booklet with all the info on points and such. Of course I haven't used it yet, but I read it. Good luck with your goals! But really, if you're feeling more human and better about yourself the pounds shouldn't matter that much. (Not that that stops us from keeping track lol)

Good for you!!!! I am toasting you with my water. I have been back to my low carbing for three weeks. Here's to looking and feeling better.

Three cheers for you!! I love Weight Watchers! I have a good friend who lost 25lbs on Weight Watchers while her hubby gained weight on the Atkins (or Ass-kins as I affectionately call it) diet. WW's is the ONLY diet out there that teaches you healthy lifetime eating skills!!
I raise my carrot stick in good health to you!
Posted by: Kate on 04.14.2005 AT 09:40 AM
Yay for Sandy! And for carrot sticks. Hip-hip-hooray!
Posted by: Norma on 04.14.2005 AT 09:36 AM
Three cheers for taking care of ourselves! Developing positive "self-talk" is a huge step, congrats. I've got very high cholesterol and have been trying to gradually change our diet to healthier choices over the past several years. Recently hubby got on the band wagon with me and that's helped tremendously. Now if I can get myself motivated to exercise more, I'll be where I want to be in no time! Now where's my carrot...

Good Luck Sandy! I have about 10 pounds of baby weight that I want to drop too. It seems I keep eating like I was still pregnant :-)
I can say from experiance, water really does make a difference. I lost 15 pounds a few years ago just switching from soda all day to water all day!

Hi Sandy, I hear you! I broke up with food in January and am enjoying my life in a new way that I never before dreamed possible. When the high starts to fade and your will is waning, here is a trick I rely on. Imagine you are on your own tv show, your audience is your blog readers, and as you pick up that twinkie, listen to your audience of loving, supportive friends scream "WALK AWAY, YOU ARE BETTER THAN THAT." So far, its worked every time for me :-) Good luck!

Hooray for you. And think of the hidden benefits. My husband and I started South Beach in January - combined we've lost 33 pounds, BUT his cholesterol went from 260 to 186. WW is a great program - balanced, healthy, great support. Have you checked out their on-line site?

I am also trying to make better food/health decisions. It always works out better when your totally into the change and ready for it!! Good luck!

Sandy, it's a pretty common theme on many blogs. I think our mental as well as physical health and situation affects our lives in so many ways. I'm very excited for you. I really need to do something about my weight situation, but can't seem to get motivated to do so, I need to work on that I guess, but I work with people who are obsessed with their weight and can talk about nothing else, and that makes me want to cringe, not join their obsession. :)
Good luck with the ripping by the way. I think you'll be much happier starting with a sleeve to get the hang of the chart. Worked like a dream for me. Happy knitting and portion controlling! :)

Carrot stick raised!
Good for you! I know I always feel so much better when I'm eating good healthful foods. It's funny why it always takes me so long to make the decision to change my eating habits . . . and why I so often creep back into bad ways?
Posted by: Wendy on 04.14.2005 AT 08:06 AM
Good for you Sandy!! The best thing about being ready to take steps to improve your health is that your whole life improves!! I'm right there with you but going the low carb route!! Best of Luck!!
