04.19.2005 :: Who are the flowers in my neighborhood?

That title is from a Sesame Street song. I can't stop missing that show!
~~~~~
I took a walk in my neighborhood to see what spring has sprung. What a beautiful time of year!
Forsythia; I used to call these "bee bushes" when I was a girl. Bees seemed to grow on them!
The most beautifully blue flower I've seen, despite the creepy shade of this picture. The camera can do funky things can it not? I have no idea what the name of these are. Anyone?
I always thought this was a dogwood tree, but I believe it's a magnolia.
Don't forget to look up! Right, MB?
Lilacs. Is there anything better? I was trying to take a picture of the bud. I love it when the buds open slightly to reveal that they are flower or leave. For the life of me, I could not focus in on the bud. And for that reason, I love this picture. I guess Miss Claudia would call this one "artsy fartsy". And maybe it is. Or not. BUT~You can see the color of the bud without really seeing it. And bark? Is there anything more interesting?
Well, sure there is, but humor me!
Sure, there is knitting going on. But all knitting and no play makes Sandy a dull girl.
This now concludes our nature segment. We now return you to your regularly scheduled blog!
Trees are just starting to bud here, but the Forsythia's been out for a while. Joe calls it, "For Cynthia" LOL. We know no one by that name. Go figure. Beautiful pics!
I love lilacs. They're simply my favorite flower in the world, and of course it only blooms once a year (which is probably why I'm such a big fan, same as my love for Cadbury Creme Eggs).
That appears to be a magnolia tree. Dogwood is an understory tree, meaning it blooms before the taller trees leaf out, and has a white four-petaled bloom. Sometimes you see them in pink but white is the more common one. Here in Missouri, they bloom at the same time as the redwoods and are some of our earliest spring flowers along with the forsythia and daffodils.
I think I was more loath to give up Sesame Street than my kids were!
The link is to a picture of the blue flowers in my garden. When I bought the bulbs they were called squill but Norma gave you the horticultural name. Very pretty spring pictures! Ours are so wet they are flooding away:-(
The photos are great, spring is a beautiful season isn't it.
I love the reference to Sesame Street. I miss watching that show with the kids. Every once in a while something will twig a memory and the most recent was someone talking about the shape of a pattern "It's really no trouble, you know it's a 'W'. That little tune was looping through my mind the rest of the day.
Love those scilla! A dead give away for magnolias is to look at the base of a leaf and see if there's a little line that goes all the way around the stem- I forget what that's called, leaf scar maybe... plant taxonomy was many many moons ago! My favorite is the banana magnolia, heavenly scent!
That would be a Magnolia tree - some of them smell heavenly. One of my favorite flowers to photograph (had some on my blog yesterday). When they open up the flower petals are like silk in their flow. Ah Spring. Wish I didn't feel so allergy sick.
The wee blue dudes are Scilla (Norma beat me to it). My mum gardens the way I knit...I had to learn a thing or two.
(Sam calls them "bluebabies")
Thanks Sandy - you're a bit ahead of us - all we have is forsythia and daffs. (I needed the little reminder, BTW - will do, today!!)
Nope, lilacs are the best!
Posted by: Colleen on 04.20.2005 AT 07:13 AM
Sesame Street was the best. It's been so long... Great photos :)
Oooh, spring time flowers. Have you ever been to the Arnold Arboretum to see the lilacs? It's something that you shouldn't miss. A beautiful day out.
My mom and I used to count forsythia bushes on the way to my grandma's house... one-sythia, two-sythia, three-sythia, four-sythia! That's what I think of whenever I see them. :-)
I love your Nature Segment! I think that blue flower is called scilla. Here's another pic:
Yeah baby! Artsy-fartsy rules. I did the exact same thing yesterday -- not that Bloglines will update me, once again, so that anybody could see. Bastards.
