04.30.2005 :: An evening of fun and mirth

Like all stories, this one has a beginning and an end. I will start from the most logical point.
In the beginning.....
Yesterday I made my way into Boston to attend a gathering at Circles for the main reason of welcoming The Book Harlot into the literary world. To say the word "ENJOY" is such an understatement. Let's just say, great fun was had by all. If you take a fun time with fun people and put it in a yarn store what you come out with is heavenly. Nirvana. Perfection. Add some yummy food into the mix? Well, it's perfectly orgasmic. But perhaps that is the wrong word.
:)
And look, pictures! Here's Stephanie herself giving us a reading/talking to.

See her? Doesn't she look grea...hmm. Looks as if I cut her off there. That is her arm. I guess I got distracted by the yummy yarn sitting next to her. Take my word for it, she looks great! And funny? Yup. (isn't that yarn yummy though? Can I say that Stephanie was yummy? Well, sure, I can SAY anything I want. My blog! :)
There were so many friends, old and new there, I can't even begin to say.
But I will.

You know that the ones sitting in the WAY BACK are always the most fun. Well, we've got your back row right here. Carolyn, Susan's knit group friend and perfectly wonderful person, Susan, who was even better in person. Who knew she lives so close to me? Have I been hiding under a rock or something? Jessica of KnitFit (red sleeve). Unfortunately I did not get a chance to get to talk to her. I regret this. Regrets, I have a few. Kate (yellow shirt) is so cute and she came down from Maine for this! I am impressed! She is perfectly wonderful herself! And sitting in a chair is fairly new to me blogger Seanna
Also of note, see the woman taking the picture near the window? She has a great red, white and blue sweater on? Well, I think I should know her. It feels like I know her. I meant to approach her and say, "Do I know you?" But I did not. Opportunity has slipped through my fingers. See the orange sweater? I am impressed with that one. She kool aid dyed it. The talent in that room was inspiring. All around inspiring. If you are a blogger and I missed out on the opportunity of meeting you, please take the time to yell at me.
My camera, a Sony cyber shot, has a distinct sound. I heard the sound, knew it wasn't coming from my camera. looked around and saw this:

Susan has a Sony Cyber shot too!
CHEESE!
And where are my pictures of Claudia? And Spindle Rose? Amy? Colleen? In my mind. You will have to imagine them along with me.
Here we are at the end of the story.
Just so you know where we stand.
I got to hang around until the bitter end. Or rather, the happy end. When the store employees started moving furniture around, we knew that this party is now over. Good byes were said, true love was sworn and I went on my merry way. Forgetting that I knew not where I was. It's okay. I think I can find my way. Just follow the Prudential center, right? Go north, woman, go north!
Yeah. If only.
I took a wrong turn and then possibly some other wrong turn and drove and drove. And drove. All of a sudden finding myself where some middle aged white woman has no right being at 11:00 at night. Scheez. I was frightened. I had no idea where I was. And I could not stop to ask. So I drove. And thought about calling Andy, but then I'd be on the phone driving through a scary neighborhood.
So I finally turned around, after safely locking my doors and beat it out of there. PHEW! I'm alive to tell the story. Thank the knitting lord.
Finally, one solid hour later, I am where I began. I finally find a street that I know and get on track. The words STORROW DRIVE never looked better to me. I could have, at that moment in time, gotten out of my car and KISSED the ground of Storrow Drive. The Road to HOME. But that would have been silly. These cars were moving right along. No time to kiss the road now!
Until about 5 minutes later when traffic came to a schreeching halt. For 35 minutes we all tried to merge into one lane. This is the moment when I had plenty of time to get out of the car, stretch my legs and kiss the ground. Who wanted to then? I"m in traffic, dammit and it's 12 midnight! DAMMIT. Now I'm tired and cranky.
1:00 am and I finally drive in my driveway. Home never looked so good. I bundle myself and all my belongings into the house, no doubt into the arms of my loving family, who have been worried sick about me.
Yeah, whatever. The sound of snores hit my ears. Not one person wants to be regaled with the tale of the evening.
Fine. Be that way.

It was so nice to meet you! I'm glad you made it home safely, with your fab yellow cotton. Sounds like it was quite a ride.

Wasn't it a great time?! Next time I hope we get to chat.

As Kate mentioned we also took a wrong turn. What a mess, trying to get back! Sounds like you had quite an adventure and I know EXACTLY which part of Storrow Drive you got stuck at. Blech.

Glad you're safe and sound and knitting away!

Geez. That's happened to me from Circles too, and in broad daylight, and I was scared too. Just remember to turn right, not left.
And Brockton is not on the north shore.
And neither is Framingham.
Glad you're safe and knitting strong.

So sorry you got lost coming to my neighborhood! JP is tricky. I drive from there to Chelsea to work every day but I couldn't describe my route to save my life. Glad you got home safely.

Glad you made it home safely. We took a wrong turn out as well and ended up having to run for Jessica's train. Wished we could have talked more but so glad I got to see the Peace Fleece in person. Have fun with that yellow cotton... can't wait to see what it becomes.

I'm just envious of all the fun bloggers you get to meet as well as the Harlotfest. Glad you are safe and sound and had a wonderful time, too!

Sounds like a wonderful evening! The night...not so good but I am glad you got home safely. My friend lived in JP. I could drive to her house and back to Hingham. That was it.

Now, where's the new yarn?

Posted by: Kathleen on 05.01.2005 AT 08:12 AM

Oh, Sandy, you are too nice! I enjoyed being a back bencher (sans bench) with you last night. I'm so flattered that you have mentioned all of us knitters and neglected to mention the lovely cotton yarn you added to your stash. And I sure would have given you good directions to Storrow Drive so you wouldn't have been lost in the urban jungle. I suppose if anyone hassled you, you could have offered them the leftover tofu and asked if they wanted to pet the yarn -- that would likely have ensured that you had a good deal of personal space! ;-)

Wow. That makes my Friday night look totally boring! (Which it was!) So glad you had fun, made it home safe!

Posted by: Mary Beth on 04.30.2005 AT 02:31 PM

Well I couldn't wait to hear all about it. What fun!! And you had quite an adventure. If there's a way to get lost, I'll do it. Glad you made it back home safe and sound :)

It was nice to meet you, Sandy! Yes, it was a great gathering.... in retrospect, I should have recognized you by your brown cardigan - I'm not too quick on the uptake ;).

Was nice to meet you last night, and I'm glad you made it home safely!

Also amused to see my sweater blogged about =)

Yeah, JP can be way, way confusing. Glad that you made it back to the 'burbs in one piece :-).

Posted by: Colleen on 04.30.2005 AT 10:44 AM

*sigh* Wanted to be there with you, but the foot rules. I think I'll be going to Acton in May. Thanks for a wonderful report. I've always lived in fear of ending up in the Bad Parts inadvertently. Thank the Great Knitter you are safe.

Getting in and out of JP is a bitch, ain't it?

You are very brave -- braver than I. I wouldn't have come if Rosemary hadn't been with me.

Posted by: claudia on 04.30.2005 AT 10:02 AM

That sounds exactly like what would happen to me. Except I would have pulled over to the side of the road to sob uncontrollably.

Looks like a fun evening!

Sandy! I'm laughing with tears running down my cheeks. I'm glad you did not get out and kiss Storrow Drive. Really, there are limits, even with Storrow Drive. Sounds like you all had one helluva marvelous time. I hope the family is being appropriately cold-shouldered this morning. Excellent photo of Stephanie's arm, btw. I can tell it's Stephanie's from here!

Posted by: Norma on 04.30.2005 AT 09:25 AM

Sounds like a great adventure! I must admit to be a little bit envious.

Posted by: Jackie on 04.30.2005 AT 09:15 AM

Sandy, it was great to see you last night, maybe the next time won't be close to two years away!
