05.16.2005 :: Pass the ketchup!
After a day of awkward silences and stilted conversations, things are getting more at ease around here with Charlotte and my family. She is delightful and it is my pleasure to get to know her and her world. When I asked her the question, "What is different here than at home?" she replied enthusiastically, "EVERYTHING!" And I believe her!
Knitting a canoe?
Or a baby sock for Charlotte's new nephew. Koigu. Need I say more?
America Eats!
I am on the hunt for some ideas, so naturally I came to you, my knitbuds. I want to be sure that German Charlotte gets to try as many American Foods as possible while here. So far she has had pizza, hot dogs, marinated steak tips, chicken stir fry, various sandwiches and her favorite so far, brownies! She has expressed an interest to try peanut butter and we will oblige with both smooth and chunky. The more I think about American foods the less ideas I can come up with. I am stumped. So, fling some ideas on me, babies!
Come cook with me!

I'm thinking of your basic "American" restaurant. Mac 'n' Cheese, fried chicken, etc. I also like the regional approach: tacos, BBQ, grinders, etc.

Pancakes. In Germany, pancakes are more like crepes. Also, pies don't usually have top crusts there.

Geez, everyone's suggestions are making me so hungry. :) Root beer floats are my suggestion since I haven't seen them mentioned. And cranberry juice... quintessentially American since this is where they're grown.

My husband is from Germany. Before he came to visit me in the states he had never had a bagel and cream cheese, nachos (we had them at a restaurant but he was blown away by taco bell), and wanted a hot dog.
He also wanted to be taken to the beach.
This sounds like fun. Perhaps I'll do the exchange student thing when my daughter is older. Enjoy!

When I was in the US (I'm german, too :-) I was most impressed by the red potatoes cooked whole, with butter, salt and steaks grilled on the gas grill, still red and juicy inside, YUMM!! (I was in Texas, can you tell??)

I've hosted 60 foreign students. They are most impressed, and almost always like, a roast turky dinner. They won't touch the dressing, but they like the rest of it. What could be more North American? I ask my students what their favourite meal was so I can cook it on their last night. The most popular has been chicken parmesan and chicken or beef kabobs on the barbeque.
Relax and have fun! She will always cherish this experience.

Beef jerkey is the first thing that came to mind. My husband's parents are German and they never cooked turkey in their house they always had goose or duck. So at least hit her up with a turkey sandwich ;D
When I go down to the states I always search for those pink and white iced animal crackers.
When I had a girlfriend come over from Germany she was enthrawled with Rice Krispie treats. She hated marshmallows and couldn't believe how much she liked them once they were melted.
Speaking of marshmallows - toasted marshmallows and s'mores. Candy apples, turtles, corn dogs, doughnuts, chicken fried steak, cheeseburgers on the grill, ribs, crab... seafood etc, tacos, nachos, burritos. I am getting hungry!

I'm a southern girl at heart. Chicken and dumplins, cornbread, spoon bread, collard greens, barbecue, sweet tea, cherry, peach or apple cobbler, mashed potatoes and sliced tomatoes and cucumbers marinaded in vinegar, salt, pepper and a dash of sugar. YUM!

Since you are a New Englander: Kelly's Roast Beef! on the beach! Or, FAMOUS Woodman's in Essex for fried clams, fries (made with lard) adn ice cold coke. You eat outside on picnic tables and well, your food comes on in newspaper to catch the grease. YUmmmyyy adn completely "NE". :) Oh, and you HAVE to make her a yankee pot roast. :) c'mon.

My German friends were most enthralled with baked potatos (they never bake them at home) and corn on the cob. And brownies, but they must be from a mix!
Posted by: Mary Beth on 05.17.2005 AT 08:56 AM
Chilli, Cincinnati-style of course, Pennsylvania Dutch pot pie, scrapple & goetta.

Don't forget some Fluff to go with the peanut butter!
And since this is New England how about some clam chowder, fried clams and lobster.

Buffalo wings, subs (grinders? torpedoes? you know, deli meat on a french roll) cream soda, big thick steaks on the grill, tater tots and french fries, baked beans, and take-out Chinese. Don't forget the roast turkey with all the trimmin's. Sweet potato pie, apple pie, caramel apples, apple crisp. Mmmm. Where can I get apple crisp at this hour?

I'm with the others on BBQ of any kind, burgers, and (being from Texas) some kind of Mexican casserole or enchiladas. While those aren't completely American, they are different here than they are in other places. Oh, and potato salad! They have German potato salad, but it's totally different from American potato salad. What fun!

Goulash! ;)
Posted by: Liz on 05.16.2005 AT 11:19 PM
Let's see...fried chicken, green bean casserole, banana splits, Boston baked beans (this last one is a definite!), um...that's all I can come up with that no one else has said yet.
Posted by: Jaimi on 05.16.2005 AT 09:58 PM
Chili Cheese Dogs/Coney Dogs, Ham Salad Sandwiches, Homemade Ice Cream, Brain Sandwiches (yuck!), Grilled Tenderloins, Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches, um......I'm all out of ideas.
Posted by: Chris on 05.16.2005 AT 09:54 PM
strawberry shortcake, chocolate chip cookies, a sub sandwich (or grinder), corn on the cob, ice cream even. (American ice cream is very different from other countries'), bagels & cream cheese. Oy, I just realized: all things I can't have!
So nice that it sounds like she's having fun and you're enjoying her! Yay, Sandy!

bbq ribs, dahhhhling, oh my God, with potato salad

Grilled cheese sandwiches. Tuna/peas/macaroni salad. (Mom always served bran muffins with that.) Regular tuna salad with pickle relish and mayonnaise. Graham crackers. Chocolate chip cookies.

Being from Pittsburgh, I'd say something that requires Heinz Ketchup! Grill out some hamburgers and bake some tater tots - and don't forget the Heinz Ketchup! :o)

Macaroni and cheese!!! any brand but it's gotta be orange (I recently discovered an organic brand that mimics good old Kraft--it's probably nowhere near as salty but oh does it make me happy). Any other kind of casserole you can think of and an iceberg lettuce salad. American Mexican food, maybe?
Desserts: Ice cream/sundaes/banana splits; any "Death by chocolate" you can find; cream pies; american apple pie...
Posted by: Daphne on 05.16.2005 AT 07:42 PM
Grilled cheese with Campbell's Tomato Soup to dip it in :)
American Coke (it's different in Europe)
Frozen Ice Pops in the clear plastic tubular package that you push up to eat and all the melty *juice* is the best part!
Coffee Milk if you visit Rhode Island.
Lobster Rolls!!
Pancakes with real maple syrup.
Want me to send up some stone crab and key lime pie ? :)
