07.28.2005 :: Less is more
If you stand around too long, I will put a sticker on you and sell you. I swear to God!
We are having a yard sale on Saturday and my house is upside down. There are piles like this all around:
And don't forget this one:
It's enough to make your head spin! I know it will be better in 2 days but it is making me crazy! The whole family is excited to sell their stuff and make a bit of pocket money.
How exciting is this really? I remember the one other yard sale we had, I was not ready. Emotionally. Now, I am. Ready. Ready to get rid of stuff. Ready to adopt the LESS IS MORE attitude.
Exception: This goes without saying, does it not? Yarn. More is more when it comes to yarn.
But I may even put out some yarn. And if it does not sell, perhaps I'll put it here.
I even went into the attic today. Okay, "went in" is not exactly what happened. We have an attic door in the ceiling that we must push out of the way and climb a ladder into the attic. That is not the part that bothers me. It's the jump DOWN to the ladder to get down that paralizes me. So, what really happened is that I stuck my head and upper body into the attic. And I reached every bag and box that I could find. The rest will be for the braver of the family to retrieve.
Attics fascinate me, though. Ours is as unfinished as they come. Complete with beams, insulation floor and nail points. It's as close as I can get to peering into the frame of our home And I love that peek into it's origin. The wood is old and wonderful looking. Dangling lightbulb gives everything a shadowed look. Spider webby and hot as hades. I don't know. I just love it. I mean, "once every 10 years or so" kind of love. Not "go up there everyday" kind of love.
2 more days.
I can make it.
I think.

sensing a trend?? LOL...I HATE having yard sales. The few times we have, I always feel as though I am sitting out there in my underwear for all to see.....ick!
I do enjoy going to them....LOL

Well, add me to the list of loathers of own tag-sale-hostingness, but I think my problem is that we save crap until its beyond the pale and then we try to pass it off to people, and people aren't that stupid.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that I loved your attic description and it made me practically able to SMELL that attic smell. We don't have one here--well, I suppose we live in it--ranch converted to cape--but we have a crawl space in the eaves. It's not the same, though: that cedary, hot, dry scent, slightly unhealthy but still sort of fascinating...mmm.
Good luck! I hope it's a great one!

I LOATHE having garage sales or yard sales (or "boot sales" in England). Yard sales are "just not done" over there, or at least not when I was living there (according to my friends)but you might put a few items in the boot of your car and stop on the highway and sell a few items. Which I always thought was a bit odd myself. Around here only The Mob would do that. Stereos that "just fell out of the back of the truck," etc.
I always end up bringing in a lot more items than I sell, and then have to find a place for it until I bring it to the Salvation Army or something. Whereas my sister could sell a petrified cat poop at her place, I can't even sell anything NICE. It's all about neighborhoods, I guess. I dunno.
But I wish you well in your yard sale, now that I've done a good job of being a huge party pooper about it. I'm sorry, I'm not usually a party pooper. But call me the Yard Sale Pooper.
(Oh, Sandy, I always have such FUN in your comments.)
;-D

Oh, I just LOATHE having garage sales! I'd rather donate it all to Goodwill, but that's just me. You're right, it will all be over in a couple of days and you'll have some extra money!
