08.16.2005 :: Go ahead, make my day!
Just do it.
No, not jogging or mountain climbing, although if you insist, then go right ahead.
Just knit mittens.
I have had a couple of comments and emails saying things like, "I wish I could knit mittens like that!" or "I always wanted to do 2 color knitting".
Well.
Why aren't you? Hey, listen. I'm going to tell you a secret. It's not rocket science. As much as I would love you to believe that I am some superhuman knitting wizz, I am not. I knit and I purl. That's it. And if you know how (which if you read this blog, you most likely DO) then you have all the prerequisite skills you need.
Knitting with 2 colors? Easy peasy. Take my word for it. Knit with one color. Let it drop. Pick up the other color. Knit with it. Follow the chart.
See? you can do it!
Go ahead. Try it if you've been thinking about it? What's the worse that can happen? Ripping it out. No loss. But think of the gain!
Do not make me pick up the cheerleading pompoms for cripe's sake.

Today Bethany and I are visiting the UNH campus. College shopping with my baby! When did this happen to me?
Hug your toddlers, ladies. And men. They will be college hunting soon.

drive by my alma mater: Saint Anselm when you are up at UNH (we called it "uhhnnn")--- they have monks and rules about "intergender mingling"... lol. My parents drove me to UNH in the morning and Saint Anselm in the afternoon... I got to see a "big" campus and a "small" one, I chose small. :) Lemme know if you need directions! College shopping.. oh, the days when i was young... (my ten year h.s. reunion is next wknd)

Mittens, Oh, Mittens, Oh, how I love your mittens. THEY SCARE ME! I bought that Folk mittens book and there are CHARTS and they decrease and stitches disappear and I am SCARED, VERY SCARED!!! I just think those charts are too smart for me...I want to try, but I'm scared...Perhaps some day...

Yes Miss Mitten, I met Nancy Bush. Poor thing was not feeling well, case of food poisoning from the hotel we were at. You can bet I didn't eat there! But she soldiered through and gave a great class!

You are so right. Once I get the knitting with one color together, I will DO IT! ;)

Last fall/winter you were my knittin' mittens inspiration... this year is bound to be the same. You're a mitten goddess, Sandy. :)

Exactly, that's what I think about Poetry. Two colours and you're off.
As for the college hunting, I was only thinking about that today when I realised that my 14 year old is now actually taller than his 6ft 1 dad!

You are the Clint Eastwood of fair isle mittens!!
Any recommendations for yarn shops in your neck of the woods?

Love the mittens! I've been contemplating learning this two color thing, and by gumbo, I think I just may dive in when my current sweater is finished. If I can make something half as beautiful as either of your pairs, I'll be happy (and warmer) this winter.

I'll put my pom poms on and cheer with Sandy. I just "did it" last fall and was very pleased with the process. What's the worse that can happen? You frog your mistakes and climb back on that stubborn horse. Latvian mittens are sooooo much fun. I highly recommend them :)

UNH is about 20 minutes down the road from me. I hope she enjoys touring the campus.Love the new mittens you are working on. Good luck today.

Okie-dokie, I'm brave. If you say so.
Good luck with the college search. This is a chapter of our lives that we embraced and enjoyed thoroughly. I hope you do, too.

Go Mitten Maven! (love that.) It is so nice to hear your encouraging words - so much of knitting is just the confidence to take the next step outside your comfort zone - which you said so well. Because of you, there just might be some warm hands this winter!

College hunting. Yikes. It seems way too soon, doesn't it?
See there, you almost had me tricked into the 2 color thing until you said the magic word of fear.....CHART.
Have a terrific day today, you Mitten Maven, you! xxoo

You say it like it is Sandy! Now I just need to work up the courage, might not start a two color project with mittens though, maybe socks! ;)
My oldest starts 1st-grade and I thought that was tough. LOL! ;)

Fair Isle is fast becoming a favorite of mine. I've got a Dale pattern all picked out but I've got to finish my painting and then get through a short todo list before I begin it. I can't wait :) I agree, it's not hard at all though I've never tried the braids or a two color caston. I find it so much easier to keep my place once I get the pattern established than doing a pattern in a single color. Go on, we wanna see pom poms ;)
Good luck with college shopping. My oldest is starting his sophomore year in a few weeks. Oi if that doesn't make a person feel old.

Atta girl, you tell it like it is. Mitten knitting is fun and easy. Mind you, you do it with a certain flair that would be hard to copy....
