09.08.2005 :: Knit Knack Paddy Whack, give the dog a sock!
Opal Petticoat socks basking in the autumn sunlight.
Needle size US1
I love these socks. I love how they look. I love how they stripe. I love how they were an easy, mindless knit. I had almost forgotten how wonderful knitting a sock can be. Blasphemy, I know.
A couple of heels:
Hey, Toe!
In fact, I liked knitting a sock so much, I immediately cast on for the DOKTORFISH sock.
Don't you just love the sunshine and shadows at this time of year?
On the new rosweood needles, heaven in a stick. They are a bit too long for my taste (8 inches), but heaven nonetheless. BUT something horrible happened at work. When I was putting my knitting away, I heard a crick. Just a soft CRICK. One side of the needle stuck in the side of my felted purse. CRICK. The dreaded sound to a knitter.
SOB! I had only used them for a couple of hours. It was way before it's time.
A moment of silence please for the Rosewood needle.
Good thing it was a set of 5. I only use 4 for sock knitting.

Just sharpen that broken needle in a pencil sharpener and you'll have five, again.
I make my own from dowel rods and they're so nice. I polish them with
bee's wax polish I get on e-bay.

Beautiful socks Sandy. And I love the heel shot. I'm fascinated by all the different sock heel constructions out there....

I hate when that happens! I tend to knit fairly tightly and I've broken a couple. Time for me to find some metal dpns! The socks are lovely :)

Those socks are beautiful!

Love the socks! I have some petticoat waiting to be knitted. I used it once already for some baby socks...if you have any left over, they turn out really cute in that pattern.

The socks are beautiful. I can see having to make 3 pairs of petticoat socks at my house. Does Bethany share in your love of handknitted socks?
So sorry to hear about the needle. That's one reason I stay away from the rosewood. I would be crying over broken needles everyday.

And that's why I'm afraid to use my wood needles, especially the smaller sizes. Nonetheless, the socks are beautiful!!

Patternworks.com sells rosewood double point in a very short length called glove needles. They also sell them in ebony. Both are wonderful and it's all I use. So far neither set has broken after 3 years use and many many socks.

oooooohhhh......I heard that very same crack with one of my rosewood needles (why is it only the expensive ones that break??)
I was holding my hair up with it and forgot about it as I got into the car.....CRACK :(((((

Yeah! The socks are very pretty!

I love the Opal petticoat socks. Every pair I've seen gives me the sock warm and fuzzies. So pretty!

Everyone I know who has rosewood DPNs has a story--and only 4 of the five left. Either it gets lost, "stolen" or crick-crack-breaks...welcome to the rosewood 4-needle group!

Ahhhhhh, the dreaded "crick," I have heard it on occasion myself. Most recently while knitting baby socks on some size 2's. Oh how I fear picking up stitches on ize 2's.
Go ahead and replace it even if ou don't need it, always good to have a spare :-)

The socks are SO pretty! I have a skein of Petticoat in the stash and have been agonizing over what to do with it. Plain knitting? Feather and fan, or other chevron pattern? I still haven't decided.
p.s. Over Labor Day Weekend we were driving around Cape Ann, and I remembered your enthusiastic praise of Woodman's, so we stopped in for lobster rolls and fried clams. Thank you so much for posting about that place. Lunch was out of this world. :-)

Beautiful socks! Great job!

Hope you can replace the Rosewood needle. What lovely Opal yarn. Do you order your Opal online. I have no source for Opal in my neck of the woods :(

ACK!! I'm so sorry to hear about the needle. Dang! I have a few metal needles that are bent practically at 45 degree angles from various accidents.
I can't believe how you crank out the projects, hon. Those socks are way cute!
xxoo

I love those socks, but could you please refrain from using the word " autumn" in your post? I'm trying to live a lie over here.

I was wondering how my newly acquired skein of Petticoat would look in just stockinette socks. Now I know! Beautiful. Sorry about your needles. I can't knit with any wooden needles without breaking them and those babies are expensive.

There is one sound that is worse, you know what it is, you try not to look, hoping that it was the yarn cracking instead (well I did say hoping) and you can feel the pinpricks of tears as you realise that oh no it was the SECOND one you snapped in as many days. Those petticoats are so lovely to knit aren't they, you just want it to go on.

i agree, i would think whomever you bought the needles from could find you a replacement. specially since you only used them for a few hours? lovely stuff, btw. is that a slipstitch heel?

I broke my rosewood straight just today - I am feeling for you!

Pretty Easter socks!

Ohhh, so sad about the needles.
I must admit, when I saw the caption, "A couple of heels," I thought I was going to see a couple of ....uh...people. And I think you know what I mean.
Liz at Pocket Farm has a cool sign on her lawn. I like it.

Sandy those are lovely socks. My condolences on the untimely demise of Ms. Rose Woodneedle.

Lovely socks. You are not alone. Left Maryland with my rosewood needles and I don't think I had them a week. Never again! You seem like a different person with Derek leaving this time ...me too, I can't wait for Carrie to leave ...; ) hehehe So dramatic we were!

much much too nice to give to the dog ;o)
pretty sure both lantern moon and colonial will do replacement needles...i'll see if i can find the links...the use of the rosewood shall not be denied ;o)

I did the same thing to my new Lantern Moon needles! It was a sad day...but then that gorgeous sock should take the sting away a bit. This is such a beautiful time of year....sigh, wish it would last.

Those socks are so adorable, they are hurting my eyes! Hehe... I really love rosewood needles, dpns and pins, but, man, they are so pricey! But so light and smooooth...

Wow, I guess I am now a member of the "four rosewood needles" club! I was so upset, it broke under normal usage!
