10.15.2005 :: Socks.
Well. Here it is. October. And low and behold, I find out about this:

All I can think about is socks. I even was lucky enough to stumble across the Knitting Vintage Socks book yesterday. I was more excited than a squirrel finding a barrel of nuts. Or something. After reading through the book (yes, I spent a Friday night planted on the couch reading a knitting book. Big whoop! You would have too!) I have narrowed it down to EVERY pair. Perhaps I can get closer to a decision upon further reflection.
After having decided that, "Yes, indeed, I will knit socks" I got out the sock yarn. Lorna's laces, koigu, mountain colors, Junes handspun, opal, Jen's wonderful handspun. My head spins. Or should that be, My FEET spin. In any case, as I dream and scheme all I can think about is the Conwy socks. From knitting on the road. They are my hands down favorite. Feet down favorite, of course.
So, I pose you this question. Can a knitter really spend the rest of her life knitting the same sock?
Can she?
Hmm?
~~~
Stay tuned for the next Rhinebeck avoidance post where I take out a bag full of goodies from last years Rhinebeck festival and play with them like I just bought them.
What do you think the equivalent of Socktoberfest would be for the mitten?
I will hurl myself bodily onto the mitten bandwagon if you do in fact choose to go there. :-) I'm dying for an excuse to cast on a Latvian or Estonian mitten... something bright and cheerful and requiring teeny-tiny needles.
You ask about mittens? Well looky over here http://nonaknits.typepad.com/nonaknits/knit_along_peaceful_palms/index.html
Nona is doing a mitten one too. I've just added my name, I think I'm out of control as far as knitalongs are concerned!
Conwy socks are on my list of must do's! I say, if you love 'em of course you can knit the over and over again!
We need a mitten fest of some kind soon - a good excuse for a naming contest, Sandy!
Of course, you spent an evening reading Knitting Vintage Socks. I certainly did. Anyone who is anyone would do the same! Gorgeous book!
I've been thinking about the mitten question all day. Haven't come up with anything very clever. Smitten with mittens? I'd love a mitten-along though!
Sandy, I'm knitting Em a knee high sock from Lorna's, and let me tell you, I'm pretty sure that I may spend the rest of my life knitting this sock!!
I could knit socks forever as well, and in the absence of a pattern I knit some sort of ribbed sock with my own person tried and true number of stitches and needles. That simple pattern could keep me going forever, though I need to branch out and try some different socks. (perhaps an investment of a sock book is in order!)
I've only ever knit utilitarian mittens and would love an excuse to make a pair of "fancy" two color Esotonian mittens. How about a "Warm Hands Warm Heart" knit along? (I've even tried translating mitten to other languages to see if it's a better "month" match but so far, nada.)
Minter!?
Conwy is a pretty cool sock but there are SO many other cool socks. NO, you can not knit the same sock forever. You wouldn't do that with a mitten, would you?
Before there were a bzillion knitting books and free patterns to tempt us. Most knitters really only used the basic sock formula to knit all their socks. IMHO Knitting or any craft should be fun, so knit what pleases you. As many times as you want. MittenSmitten,MittenFest, Mittenknitten or Warmhandfactory, MittenMania...
I just finished my Conwy socks and I have to agree with you! These are my favourite socks I've ever knit! I say knit as many pairs as you want.
I think you should knit what you're in the mood to knit! Knitting is supposed to be all about YOU and indulging YOURself. So, if Conwy continually does it for you, then knit it. :-)
I have spoken. Thank you.
Hehehe
Hi Sandy, Mitten + Fall = Mittall? Enjoy your dry fiber :-)
I would love a Mitten along. I am working on my third pair of the "Love Cable " mittens. The Conway socks have been on my list of to do's. That list just keeps getting longer.
