10.30.2005 :: As the seasons blur

Even though I've lived in New England all of my life, sometimes I am still taken by surprise by the weather. I follow it pretty closely, Todd Gross being my teacher. He predicts, I believe. When he told me that there would be snow showeres, but nothing substantial in my hometown, I did believe. So, when I saw this gentle snow falling down, I appreciated it. And quickly took a picture, thinking it would be my last chance for a while.

As I bundled up in my various wool attire to do my volunteerism as the Beverly High School Football game's concession stand (best burgers and dogs around, after all, it's Andy back there cooking them!) I never anticipated it turning into this:

Please do notice that home team is winning. Substantially, which, I'm told is a rare occurance, one that should be savored. I'm there for the band, I do not notice the fumbling around very much. True.
I knew that there would not be another band opportunity like this one, meaning of course, snow covered, so I sprung into action. Leaving my fellow volunteers to man the concession stand by themselves, I put my Photographer Hat on. (figurative, not literal. I wish I did have a hat, it would have kept me a bit warmer and drier!) I didn't feel too bad about the abandonment though, since there were approximately about 30 fans left in the whole stadium by that point.

The Fantastic Four! 3 of them posed happily for me, stating that they wanted to use the picture for Christmas cards from the Tuba bunch. One in particular had that "Oh, MOM" look on her face. You can pick her out, can't you? Third cold one from the left. That's my Bethany!
When the game was over, we all trudged home through the snow with our wet sneakers and band shoes, thoughts of warmth running through our heads. Luckily Bethany got a bit of a headstart on us because the band was dismissed earlier than the volunteers. All I could think of was a steaming bowl of fish chowder, freshly made earlier that day, warm, dry clothes and perhaps a steaming mug of tea. What I got was dry clothes and a cold house, no warm food or drink thanks to a power outage that lasted a good 3 hours.
3 hours and I was feeling a bit caged in. No communication with the outside world. No radio or tv. Hardly any knitting even. It was dark!
Never fear, though. When the power came back on, we all imbided in the hot food/beverage of our choice and got our fill of electonics.
Mitten Photo Op!
I debated and pondered what would be my first knitalong mitten. Here it is
DSC05504.JPG
Advika mitten from Mission Falls booklet Smitten. I am blindly following the instructions for the striping order. And see on the bottom? A bazillion and one ends to weave in? Yeah.
Warm Hands Knitalongers can email me at sanhurl{at}comcast.net. You know what to do. Or you can leave a comment.
One more. Flower in the snow:

Just love the idea of the tuba picture for the christmas card. Just a perfect background with the snow.
Thanks for sharing.

If we had snow like that, we would be in a state of emergency. I have never seen that much snow. All schools would close down. We have no idea how to drive in it. Oh my goodness....

Great photos, Sandy - really captures the freaky early snow!

I saw that on the news, winer one day, fall the next. It's hard on the body. But sure is kinda fun. I'm quite jealous of the snow though, I so love snow.

Wow, snow. I suppose I should stop complaining that it is in the 50's when I get up in the morning (quickly rises to the 80's).
Though, with all that snow, it gives you an excuse to buy more wool, and do more knitting!

I LOVE your stripey mitten! How cheerful! :-)

And I finished my first pair this weekend. Come and see! I'm hoping to cast on another pair later in the week, if time permits. Saturday's storm has put me in mitten mode. (Never mind that it was 70 yesterday. I still need more mittens. ;-)

Wow, snow -- you can keep it! *lol*

Your mitten looks great, but that poor flower looks a little chilly ... maybe it needs a mitten too. :)

Great mitten !! I love these colors. I am in Montreal and am still waiting for the first snow...

It snowed like the Dickens here, but no sticking! It just hit the ground and disappeared, all frickin' day long. Very strange and beautiful. Today, on the other hand (speaking of mittens) I planted bulbs and thank Todd for the sunshine.

The snow looks so pretty! Some day I shall have to experience snow. I'm pretty sure all I'll do is complain about being cold, but I'd like to see it at least once.

I bet it's hard to play your instrument when it's that cold1

Oh Sandy! As one Band-Mom to another...I am sorry that I was complaining that it was cold at our football game on Friday night and the band review we were at last night! Out here in N.California we may get drizzle and fog...but no way will it EVER snow on us. Seeing these photos make me appreciate and understand the obsession with mittens and gloves. Happy Knitting!

Wow. Snow. Lots of snow. In October. You New Englanders are tough.

My first set of mittens is done and up on the blog -- scroll down. Next set? Probably to match daughters POA scarf.

Stay warm!

Thanks for the Cape Ann pictures, as always - I love the Tuba Bunch's Christmas card photo, especially. Advika looks like fun - I still haven't decided what sort of warm hands project I'll be doing (have to finish a baby sweater first). *waves* Tell home I said hello (former Cape Ann person here...)

That last picture is just breathtaking.

Keep that stuff up north! Great photos - love the Xmas card. I was talking about you yesterday - my costume tomorrow - my Salem witch hat!

Have fun with all the wackos and Happy Halloween!

So, will you miss the band stuff next year? I was in tears Friday night, as it was Meg's last home game, and senior night, where the senior football players, cheerleaders and band members get recognition. Meg has really loved her years as a member of our marching band. I won't have much time to miss it though, as Erin is moving up to the high school in the nick of time giving me four more years. That's a good thing......I think.

Love all of the photos... but especially the Tuba photo. It has this ethereal timlessness about it. Eye candy! :)

I had forgotten about the 'Smitten' booklet... will have to check it out!

As a former band parent myself (ok, so she was color guard, even worse than band cause we had to make the costumes and help with makeup and get over the fact that our adolescent girls were told to wear clingy stuff and move in ways we would normally try to discourage), I love the "fumbling around" description of football!! Hope you are warm again!

That would be *nieces*!!

I'm starting a mitten today! Nice post and I didn't know that you're a marching band parent. You know Blogless Sharon? She was a marching band parent for years - until her youngest graduated last June. She and I went to the Franklin Fiber Twist yesterday and she was remarking on how glad she was that she didn't have to be cooking burgers at the big band meetup here in East Bridgewater yesterday evening. Anyway, nice post. Crazy with the snow, huh?

My BU mieces said it was snowing yesterday but your photos still shocked a bit. Today it's a sunny, crisp day in the heartland, with trees in full color (which I'll appreciate even more now.) Finishing up my Octoberfest socks today and then on to the mittens.
Oh, and this Massachusetts girl can smell your fish chowda! Mmmmm...

Oh, you made me laugh again. You're special like that.(It was this that did it this time: "Please do notice that home team is winning. Substantially, which, I'm told is a rare occurance, one that should be savored. I'm there for the band, I do not notice the fumbling around very much. True.")
That is ONE KICKASS Xmas card picture!!!! And yeah, the mitten - gorgeous. Lots of ends to weave in, but worth it. God, I am lusting after all the colors of the Mission Falls rainbow. Should I go out and buy them all? The correct answer is NO. I have TOO MUCH YARN ALREADY. Jeeps.

We had snow this weekend, too but thankfully it is all where it belongs...in the mountains. We're going to visit it today. Rain, rain, rain in the valley for three days and we're loving it! It was a long dry summer. I started my mitten, too. I'll keep you posted. The poor sad flower (daliah?) must be so cold. Stay warm and knit, et;-)
