11.03.2005 :: Say bye bye!
It IS pretty. The yarn is lovely to work with. And the colors? Aren't they fabulous?
But.
That is one little word that says so much. I do not feel the love. I am disappointed as I fully expected to love these mittens.
Why?
Oh, the cuff is too long, the stripes on the mitten are fun but on my hand they do nothing for me except feel ridiculous, the decreases are a bit wonky and do not match my hand well. Yes, it's true, all these can be fixed. Shorten the cuff, fix the decreases.
But.
There it is again.
I just can't bring myself to do it. I can't. I love it but I'm not IN love with it. You know?
So, I'm back to the scheming stage. The most fun. What will it be? I wonder..

I've updated for the WHKA. Not sure if I was to comment here, at the WH page or email you (but I couldn't find your email address). Anyhoo... I've made progress on some mittens and listed the URL for you :D

I thought they were wonderful, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

I hate it when I don't feel the project love - I hope whatever the yarn grows up to be brings a smile to your face! (good luck with those wonderful colors!)

No! No! Don't frog, it's too cute! Insert some greenery and hang it as a Christmas decoration.

That's kind of the way I feel about the gloves I finished last week. Nothing actually wrong with them, but . . . no love. Sad, huh? Your mitten did look cute, though--nice while it lasted--but if it doesn't love you, you've got to let it go.

I know you can salvage that mitten. You love the colors and the general idea of it, right? How about shortening the cuff by a few stripes, using only the colors you really like, and then knitting the hand plain, in your favorite color?
In the Estonia book there's a picture of a pair in a museum done with a "peacock tail" cuff--basically a feather-and-fan-type of lace with one or two rows each of many different colors. The historical pair has a very fancy pattern in the hand too, but I'd just do the hand plain. Hilja's Mittens use the peacock stitch for the cuff, but with only one little stripe instead of many. Think about it! Maybe what your glove needs is that little touch of lace. Could be awesome! :-)

I DO know that you mean! Are they Mission Falls -- if so, they must be Mission-Falls worthy :)

So fun and colorful! But I know the feeling - just imagine how you feel when you DO love the end result - that'll get you through the rip.

There's always Dulaan! I must admit, knowing the texture and feel of Mission Falls Wool, which I love for a sweater and a hat and a scarf, I wondered how warm and durable it would be for a mitten.

oh no - bye bye little mitten.
I was just thinking how much I liked that extra long cuff - less of a chance of snow getting up my sleeve.

Did you cut all of those ends already? If so, don't rip, swap the mostly done mitten (with the yarn needed to finish it) with someone for something better suited for you! It would be a shame to waste all of that yarn and work.

The mitten is gorgeous, but if you're not happy with it, sometimes you just gotta rip it, rip it good.
Thinking of you, hon. xxoo

If you don't love it enough to do a second one and gift them away then you must rip and find one you do love. Like the mitten that's your Warm Hands header. ;-)

I think they're awfully cute and funky. I'd finish 'em and give 'em away. To ME!

I think they are wonderful, but rip, if you must, as you are the one, She Who Must Be Pleased.
Posted by: Laurie on 11.04.2005 AT 06:35 AM
Rip it out and you'll feel better. :)
Posted by: Helen on 11.04.2005 AT 05:25 AM
No no no! Please don't rip it! It's so cute. Someone would love it. You must know a someone, no?
Posted by: Cassie on 11.04.2005 AT 12:38 AM

I'm with you -- if it doesn't make your heart sing, rip it out! No time for boring knits unless requested specifically by loved ones! MUCH loved ones...
Another mitten done on the blog -- thanks for the motivation!
