12.11.2005 :: My Christmas cards are made out! That may be a world's record!

Friday we had the biggest snowstorm I have ever personally witnessed. Not the biggest snowfall, but the biggest, baddest snow. I never before truly understood what a white out was. I did not really get it when people abandoned their cars in mid-drive. Until Friday, when I was out driving in a white out. It took me over 25 minutes to get home from the grocery store, which is, at best, a 5 minute drive complete with red traffic light. The wind was howling but worst of all was the scary, scary lightening and deafening thunder. Snow thunder. I thought the world was going to end. I was never so grateful to arrive home. Then I did what any self respecting blogger would do. I took a picture. What else could I do? It's in the code!

The view out my front door. Down the driveway, across the street, you can barely see the huge tree and the church is missing. It's okay not to be able to see out your front door. It's not okay to not be able to see out of your front windshield.
I hope to never see a storm like that again. Or that lightning.

The storm still raged over the ocean when it was done with us. The sky was such an angry shade of gray. I guess when it's white all around, the gray up above goes unnoticed!
Mom Update!
Mom had her surgery on Thursday and came home Saturday. Yeah, no dawdling due to sickness around those hospitals! The operation went well, she is feeling as you would expect: sore and tired. But hopeful. The doctor told her everything looked good and Mom will get the results of the biopsy on Friday. The woman in the bed next to her, a 49 year old woman, wasn't so lucky. Her cancer had spread and the doctor had to tell her that she couldn't get it all and when she comes in on Friday, she will start her chemotherapy. Mom felt a bit humbled by her good fortune.
But, Mom is a stubborn, stubborn woman. I went to Mom's house to spend the night and "HELP" her. Ha. That woman does not need help. She needs to sit. Now, it is apparent where I get that. Having not done the backing for Mom's wonderful counted cross stitch Santa tree skirt yet, I brought my sewing machine along. Procrastination is my best trait!

And I sewed!
And sewed!

~another craptastic picture for your viewing pleasure. Sun behind makes picture taking hard! It's hard work!~

~Backing against the front!
So, here's what I ended up doing. I backed it with light blue fabric (jolly ol' St. Nick, number 906-55) sandwiched it with Thin cotton batting, edging it with lace. I then tied it in several places to resist shifting, towards the back, hardly noticeable on the front.
And I have to say, I love the finished product! My sewing machine, after having a long, long sabattical in the basement, was not too keen on running. It was questionable for a while! It did come back to life though.
Tomorrow, I plan to do a mitten update. Yup. AND, I'll show some knitting. Heh, who would have expected that?!

I love seeing what the storm looked like from your part of the state. We had whiteout in the hospital courtyard, for heaven's sake! And speaking of, I'm glad your mom is doing well. Fingers still crossed.

Such lovely photos and good news! Continued healing thoughts are heading your Mom's way.

Hmmm.....thunder and lightening during a snow storm? I have never heard of that before. I bet it was scary!

I am really glad that your mom is ok - and that you are ok as well [with your mom and that crazy whiteout]. Your Santa skirt is adorable! Looking forward to seeing your mitts :D

Glad to hear your Mom is okay!

That cross stitch is beautiful! How long did it take you? That would take me eons to finish! You must have incredible patience to get through a piece like that. =)

Great news on your mom! I thought of you on Friday and figured you'd be taking some sky photos. I took some, too, but haven't posted them yet.

Yah! Mom is okay! Mom is okay!

That tree skirt is gorgeous! I thought about making my own tree skirt once. Once. The impulse passed quickly.

So, So pleased to hear the good news about your Mum! I can't think of a better Christmas gift.

Wow I love that cross stitched Christmas tree skirt, very pretty!
I had experienced a real New England white out when I lived there long ago and I was so amazed you could get thunder with snow. I was was driving too and had to pull over for a long time because I couln't see the car in front of me. Very scary, but I was sitting so long and amazed at what was sround me that I took pictures too. hehehe, my Husband thought I was nuts for that, but is was cool to see. I have never seen lightning with snow before, I think that would freak me out.
I am glad your Mom is better.
The only mittens I knitted last week were these itty bitty wonky thumbed ones. Do they still count? I did pick up some red yarn the other day to start knitting some red mittens soon with fuzzy cuffs and a pair of Mrs. Beeton's.

Thanks for the good news. And the photos.

We haven't had a good white out in a long time nor thunder/snow! That's a cruel winter. It's good to hear you made it safely home.
Wonderful news about your mother!
And your sewing skills are fabulous. What a great looking skirt! You have a post full of good fortune.

The tree skirts looks fantastic! I knew you would do an awesome job. And good news on mom, too. I'll be keeping things crossed for the results this week as well.
The snow on Friday was wicked bad, huh? It took me an hour to get home and it's usually a 25 minute drive. I've only driven in conditions that bad once before and it was scary. I was glad I was in the Suburban and not the little Jeep, that's for sure.
And Dale, with the school bus? He didn't finish getting kids home until almost 6 pm and he's usually done at 4 on Fridays. Yikes!!

Beautiful job on the tree skirt, Sandy! Glad to hear the surgery went well for your Mum. Have you put out your christmas miniatures yet? Show us!

Posted by: Donna on 12.12.2005 AT 01:40 AM

Sandy! It is gorgeous! It reminds me that I forgot to look for the Santa ornaments for you. I think I still have them, I'll look tomorrow. If you don't hear from me, remind me!

More prayers headed your mom's way, that all of the rest of the news will be as good as it can be.

We grocery shopped during the white out too. My husband sees it as an adventure. Me? Not so much. Then, because of the quickly falling snow and rapidly covered roads, we were stranded at the market. Traffic was at a standstill in every direction thanks to cars off the road, or just plain stuck in the road, and tractor-trailers stuck or jack-knived. Not fun. Next time I will be better prepared.

Although generally, I've had a good experience with the Canadian medical systen, I've never been seriously ill. Thank goodness your mom is in the States where she didn't have to wait in line for her surgery. Hope she's feeling better soon.

Make your lemonade and vodka a double, you deserve it.

Holy cow, that's some SNOW! That is one fabulous tree skirt - beyond beautiful. And hooray for your mom!

Glad you made it home safely. I've never actually driven through a white-out, but I have through serious fog, and it's very scary when you can't safely see past the hood of your car.

Also glad your Mom's surgery went so well, the Christmas tree skirt looks great, and yay for the Christmas cards!

Welp, we're looking at February for my holiday cards. But MY clients might have holiday cards before Xmas. Does it count if you're making other people's cards? I'm so tired.

That storm sounds WICKED COOL! Although I'm glad you're home safe to blog about it. Still. I don't think I've ever witnessed thunder and lightning during a snowstorm.

So glad to hear about MOM! Hope the news continues to be good.

Nice job on the tree skirt. My Xmas cards are not done yet -- all three of them that I do. Lazy? Why, yes, I am.
