12.13.2005 :: So, would YOU peek?

When I was a young girl, my best friend Debbie lived across the street from me. She hated surprises. She always searched for her Christmas gifts ahead of time. Her mother, catching on to the snooping Debbie, always wrapped them before hiding them. Debbie found them, slit them open, peeked and then rewrapped them. She also always read the last chapter of a book first. She hated surprises. Me? I loved them. But, being the wishy washy type girl that I was, I went along. Debbie wanted me to search for my Christmas gifts one year. We found it! A brand new organ! Not as big as the one in this picture, but impressive nonetheless to my 12 year old self! I was thrilled! I supressed my knowledge for the weeks before Christmas and then a funny thing happened. Christmas morning came and I had no reason to get up. Sure, I'd finally be able to play the organ, but I had no surprise to run downstairs for. I faked what I thought was a suitable reaction, but in reality, I'm sure it was fairly overdone. To fake surprise is not a 12 year old's domain!
Since that day, I am wishy washy no more when it comes to peeking. I am stalwart in my non peeking. A gift can be placed next to me for a month and I will not budge!
I am a freak like that!
:)
So, tonight, a package was delivered to my home. I looked it over and decided that I had not ordered it. I had Bethany open it and take the receipt out, knowing that the package was from my BP! (better secret pal, in case you don't know) I know that those Amazon people do not care about surprises! But I do! Bethany destroyed the evidence, leaving me just the gift!
So, BP, winter style, your secret is safe with her!

Here it is! It's enough to make me lightheaded!
Marvelous mittens!
Sensational Socks
and
The Best of Lopi
Well, Bp! You have outdone your mystery self! Thank you!
Now, excuse me, I have some reading to do!

WOW, how fun!!! It's a BP-Palooza!

Excellent spoilage! I have the Lopi and the mitten book I love them both. You're so good for not peaking at the name.

I love surprises too. :)

I'm a no-peeker as well. I don't even want to see the wrapped packages becaue I'm a good guesser. When we get a Christmas package from our family in the States, I rip off the customs form and throw it away without reading it.

Yay! That was really fast delivery. Well done, Amazon. I am glad you like the books - I would have loved them myself, too! They look fabulous. ;-)

I don't like finding my gifts and opening them - I did as a child, but don't have a desire now.. I like the surprise.
The sock book is a GREAT book. I find it a great resource for troubleshooting also. Good work better secret pal!
I don't get reading the last chapter of a book - how can you put the pieces together before that and get much out of it???

Posted by: Cathy on 12.14.2005 AT 03:11 PM

lordy...we got a very tiny (table top) organ when i was in grade school (my sister was too young to really understand how to use it so i must have been less than 10)...one of the things we learned (eventually) was christmas carols "by the numbers" (the keys and the songbooks had numbers connected to each note)...the problem with this is that a good 30 years later i STILL think "5-6-5-3, 5-6-5-3" when i hear silent night lol

oh...and i'm an unrepentant (and still 'surprised') peeker when i get the chance...i even read the end of mysteries first...doesn't bother me in the least ;o)

I don't peek either. Too disappointing in the end.

What a fantastic haul from your pal! Do tell us about the mitten book...

Ooh, what a nice surprise! I love that sock book!

I like surprises only when I don't know I'm getting them. I hate when someone tells me they have something for me or there's a present under the tree. If someone just gives me something out of the blue, I'm happy, but I really hate waiting. (This is from someone who talked her hubby into a spinning wheel two months before her birthday!)

I love surprises, too but it's rare that I haven't already figured out what's coming. BP's are fun like that because you have no idea what they'll send and they are unknown to you. Good job of keeping it that way;-)

If one reads the end of a book first, but isn't a peeker and can have a package from Zappos that she didn't order sit in her hallway for weeks, what would that person be? Just wonderin'.

Posted by: claudia on 12.14.2005 AT 11:02 AM

I always ask what I'm getting (i.e. Christmas gift from hubby), but I really, really DO NOT want to know. It's part of the fun. Wanting to know, but not wanting to know until Christmas morning.

Looks like you got some great books!

Posted by: Luvtocraft on 12.14.2005 AT 11:01 AM

I always wanted to know ONE thing I was getting. Just one. Something small. So I'd snoop until I'd spotted one thing I was sure was mine, and then stop. I liked the little edge of knowing something that was supposed to be secret, but still got to be surprised and thrilled by the rest.

When I shared this with my Mom however many years ago, she was stunned. Apparently, I faked surprise pretty well!

Your better pal is awesome.

I always peeked at my christmas presents, and it was always a disappointment in the end.

Posted by: Cassie on 12.14.2005 AT 09:32 AM

I go back and forth on the surprise thing. Sometimes I want to be, sometimes I don't.

Better pals rock. No contest.

Yeah, I'm more like Debbie, I must admit. You're such a good grrl. But WOW, did your BP do you well!!!! Holy cow, woman! Stop reading! You have stuff to do! Get up off that couch NOW! Come on! ;-D

Debbie must be related to my brother. He would always ferret out all the gifts for himself and my sisters and inform us of everything whether or not we wanted to know. I never thought about it but that must be why I have no temptation to peek now. Jason can leave presents under the bed and tell me not to look and I generally forget all about them even being there.

Wonderful books! You are all set for the next few snowstorms. I bought the sock book, and it is next to me right now.

Posted by: Laurie on 12.14.2005 AT 06:41 AM

I snooped one year at Christmas, and I found that the big gift that I'd asked for, ( a down jacket--it was all the rage, everyone had one!), was a cheap, not-real-looking knockoff. Not only did I have to act surprised, but I had to act like I liked it! I've never snooped again!

Posted by: Annie on 12.14.2005 AT 06:20 AM

I'm with you on the no peeking side. My children don't even get a look in as everything I buy gets wrapped immediately and hidden in the loft (attic) They can't get up there without us knowing as they need the ladder. The surprise is half the fun anyway. Nice package there, I think I might get Sensational Socks

Posted by: Tracy on 12.14.2005 AT 05:27 AM

Oooh, nice books, dude. Enjoy them! And I was a snooper for Christmas presents. I really don't enjoy surprises.

Posted by: Carole on 12.14.2005 AT 02:57 AM

Wow! What a great surprise. I'm still in the dark about the SP thing. I wish I had more time to research it.
My family also got an electric organ from Santa when I was around 10 or 11. I remember playing the tune, "Drink To Me Only With Thyne Eyes" from the book that came with it. The things you remember...

Lucky lucky you! I SO love that sock book! There's a sensational socks KAL starting, too.
