02.01.2006 :: Used to quilt: that's what it should say beside my name!

Sandy, she used to quilt!
I promised Carole and Blogless Sharon that I would post a picture of my quilt. This was a mystery quilt project done with my local guild, stuffed in a closet, unfinished of course and found recently by me. I have to say, I like it! Perhaps it needed a bit of a hibernation for the love to develop!

Tilt your head to the left to get the top on the top where it belongs. I know. I shoulda, woulda, coulda. Just tilt, please!
See the stalk?
DSC06012.JPG
Well, it looks kind of ridiculous and lonely without it's yoyo flowers that should have been attached!

A closer look around the quilt!

And unless I can knit a backing, I'm just not that interested in finishing it. I'd love to have it hanging on my wall, though!
How about you? What did you USED to do?

I am a quilter who knits. I used to crochet and cross stitch (even won some awards for this). But now, I spend 80% of my time quilting and the rest knitting.

I'd be happy to finish the quilt for you.

The quilt is really beautiful! I hope to learn about quilting one day... thanks for showing it to us!

First and foremost - Happy Anniversary. The list of what I used to do is way too long. What I still do is better. I knit, spin, weave, quilt, sew. What I have tried and would like to do gain, but just can't squeeze it in is Scrapebook, make paper, make cards. What I used to do and don't anymore (or as seldom as I can manage) is clean house and cook! TeeHeeHee

Happy Anniversary.

I still occasionally quilt and sew. I used to x-stitch a lot (and there are still 2 partial projects that I am determined to finish!). Mostly I knit and read since they are easily transported to hockey rinks and lacrosse fields where I spend a lot of time (please don't point out how portable x-stitch is). I love the colors in your quilt. At first glance, I thought the stem was a saguaro cactus so maybe it doesn't need the yo-yo flowers. And how about knitting a denim or fulled wool backing? Either would have enough bulk that you wouldn't need batting and only a little outline quilting to hold it together. (Tho it would be an Olympic Effort :))

Beautiful. I still quilt, embroider and cross stitch. Oh, and read. Just in much smaller doses. Send the quilt to me. I will back it. Don't you think it deserves it?

Posted by: Jennifer on 02.03.2006 AT 04:13 PM

I used to do machine embroidery. I bought two machines, bought all these cards and designs, expensive digitizing software, thread, stabilizers, whew! Then I took up knitting again. Machine quilting, I have not done in years, though I now have machine embroidery quilting designs!

I think this is my first time commenting on your blog, however I read every day :)

I used to cross-stitch, as a matter of fact, I still haven't finished the birth sampler I started for my son who is now 4 years old, this is among many other unfinished projects...

Posted by: Sharon on 02.02.2006 AT 05:01 PM

sandy that quilt is beautiful. let me volunteer Carole and I to help you finish it. I personally like prints to back my quilts. then they are reversible. stripes are nice too.
anyways I like it!!!

I made one quilt and one quilt top a few years back. That was enough for me.

What I really used to do, though, was crochet. Irish crochet, filet crochet--teeny tiny steel hooks and ultra-thin cotton thread. I made tons of pineapple doilies and such, mostly from Leisure Arts pamphlets. I did this mostly during the middle school and junior high years, before I knew about knitting.

Yeah, I used to quilt too - have tons of fabric. Also cross stitch and sewing. Exercising at the gym has gone by the wayside - now I try to keep up with a 6 year old. Norma reminded me of the days of baking bread and cooking meals. What happened to having all that time??

Posted by: Lisa on 02.02.2006 AT 12:23 PM

Paint, cross stitch, read and tapestry. I still knit, but would probably only do one project a year. You must get that quilt finished, it's too gorgeous to abandon.

I have a quilt in my closet too! It's completely hand peiced and big enough for a queen size bed. When I pick a project, I jump in with both feet. I never learned how to do the binding or the backing, so it never got done.
Now with my knitting, chances for the quilt are slim...

. I used to read. Tons. I started when I was four and simply never stopped. You would be hard pressed to find me without a book in my company, and I'm talking *everywhere*. I remember having the sudden, random thought one day that nothing could ever replace my absolute love of reading. About a month later I taught myself to knit, and now I don't read anywhere nearly as much as I used to. Audio books are a blessing! :)

Posted by: Carie on 02.02.2006 AT 10:52 AM

Yeah. I used to read, jus' like Laurie. I used to bake bread....I kept a sourdough going at all times. I used to work out regularly. I used to eat better. I can never claim to have cleaned the house. But I used to cook dinner EVERY DAY. Not anymore. Knitting and blogging have clearly been hazardous to my health. I think I should sue somebody.

I'm another lapsed quilter - though I am about to make another one as a favour (if I can remember how)I was also a Cross stitcher (and designer at that with my own little company)Then one day I picked up my knitting needles for the first time in 10 years and that was it I haven't picked up a sewing needle since (except to sew up the odd jumper)

Posted by: janine on 02.02.2006 AT 07:55 AM

needlepoint. i have enough canvases stashed to open a small store. (quilting fabric also).

Posted by: vanessa on 02.02.2006 AT 07:41 AM

Now I thought the flowerless stalk was a cactus - and I love it!

Me? I used to quilt too. I used to do counted cross-stitch, needlepoint, beadwork, sketch, paint, sew, bake bread, cook, and I even used to clean my house.

Posted by: Wendy on 02.02.2006 AT 07:03 AM

I used to do counted cross stitch. I even think I have a half finished piece somewhere that got put down when I first started knitting 3.5 years ago.

Posted by: Zardra on 02.02.2006 AT 12:27 AM

I used to quilt, cross stitch, and sew. I just can't pull myself away from my knitting long enough to work on anything else anymore!

Posted by: Rachel on 02.02.2006 AT 12:17 AM

Counted cross stitch. Let's never speak of this again.

Posted by: stephanie on 02.02.2006 AT 12:06 AM

That is a great pattern, I love you color combinations. The contrasts are great, making the pattern pop up. I've got to tell Wendy to come and see!

Posted by: Dave Daniels on 02.01.2006 AT 10:51 PM

Used to bead, used to crochet, used to read (ahem), used to quilt, used to embroider. If you need backing fabric, I will send you some.

Posted by: Cassie on 02.01.2006 AT 10:47 PM

Pretty much, I've always knit. I made one quilted Xmas tree skirt (finished it) and learned to sew. But first, last and always: knitting.

Laurie is cracking me up.

Posted by: claudia on 02.01.2006 AT 10:26 PM

Ummm...I used to sleep. ;)
I used to actually read books, too. Now I listen to them all on CD.

Posted by: Katy on 02.01.2006 AT 09:15 PM

I usta read. Way back when. Now I'm ill iterit. Damn that knitting. Blogging's worse.

Posted by: Laurie on 02.01.2006 AT 08:30 PM

Beautiful job! You should have someone back it and hang it on the wall. I also have a quilt top tucked away unfinished somewhere. I don't know what possessed me to think that I would make a king sized quilt (knowing my short attention span.)

My DH called me a craft junkie. I've done quilting, needlepoint, scrapbooking, rubber stamping, stained glass, and the list goes on!

Posted by: Laura on 02.01.2006 AT 08:18 PM

Before I knit, I used to ...
...do housework
...work out (semi-regularly)
...read a lot
...beadwork
...sleep

I still do a little of all the above. Maybe not as much housework as I should, though...

Posted by: Danielle on 02.01.2006 AT 08:17 PM

Oh, Sandy...you should definitely have someone finish it up so you can enjoy it. Many quilt shops now offer machine quilting services and it wouldn't be expensive to have a wall hanging quilted up.

Posted by: Jan on 02.01.2006 AT 07:33 PM

I have a few unfinished quilts waiting for me. I will get back to it, some day!

Posted by: Wendy on 02.01.2006 AT 07:22 PM

Too much to mention. I did the blog thing, two words they put together were beer belly! What? I don't even drink beer.

Posted by: Chris on 02.01.2006 AT 07:01 PM

Ha! I know what you mean when you say if you could knit a backing for your quilt...I used to crochet a lot, and have several unfinished projects leftover, and sometimes I think I'd finish them by knitting! I also used to do embroidery, and needlepoint, and, um, housework......

Posted by: Jenny on 02.01.2006 AT 06:41 PM

I was a quilter too, although mostly just dabbling. My first is still hanging on my living room wall, and its still my favorite. I always loved the piecing and hated the actual finishing and quilting. Not much of a quilter I guess!

i used to sit on my couch watching tv just sitting there and then sometimes out of boredom i'd go find something to eat. and eat.

now i sit on the couch but i actually make stuff now.

Posted by: maryse on 02.01.2006 AT 06:28 PM

It's beautiful! And it would look great in my bedroom. ;-)

Posted by: Carole on 02.01.2006 AT 06:04 PM

It's lovely. Even with the tilting.

I used to do quite a bit of beadwork - I still do, occasionally. I've dabbled in lots of crafty stuff - cross-stitch, a bit of sewing, tole-painting...oh, and writing. Lots of writing. Knitting seems to be the only thing that has really stuck. That, and writing. And now, the best of both worlds...writing about knitting!

If you trust a stranger to your hard work, I could finish it up for you. Email me if you'd like me to.
