02.20.2006 :: The story of the 3 knits!
First up, we have the malabrigo hat!
Pattern: Coronet from Knitty. A wonderfully written, easy to follow pattern and fun to knit. A success story. I'm not sure how well this yarn shows off the cable but I like it anyway.
Yarn: malabrigo in colorway little lovely a more than lovely, generous gift from my BP, Terri (I'm still cooking up a photo shoot for that entry!)
Needle size: US9
I'm serious now, if you have not knit with Malabrigo, take the oath and promise yourself you will indulge. Go ahead. Raise your right hand, you know what to do!
The second little knit is the Nordic Mitten from the Winter '04 issue of Interweave Knits.
The yarn is the Brown Sheep Nature Spun, the knitting is quite fun. Weaving in the thousands of ends will be another story, but I will deal with that when I get to it.
The 3rd little knit. What to say? With 2 wildly successful knits in a row, the foreshadowing alone is enough to make the average knitter squirm, is it not?
Behold the beauty of the Jaywalker sock, in Tiffany yarn! It is a work of art. And it might just go in a frame on the wall. It does not fit. Did you hear me? IT IS TOO SMALL! I blame only myself. I had the extreme pleasure of conversing at length with the jaywalker creator herself and she warned me. (the words still echo in my brain) "Try it on, make sure it fits!"
And I did try the sock of that moment on. And it was too small, so I changed it. And then did not try it on again. I just knit stubbornly. Ignoring the sage advice. And you know, It DOES NOT FIT! Will not go over the heel. I am feeling quite heel-like.
Join me in a rousing DANGIT!
It really IS pretty, though!
Take my word for it, knitting ladies and gents: TRY IT ON!
I do believe that will be the end of my jaywalking jaunt. It is without a doubt, yarn and pattern combined, the prettiest sock that came from my needles.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have a holiday Monday to enjoy!

Oh, wow! The Nordic mitten is just lovely. Such neat stitches and such vivid colours... Beautiful.
Hope you are having a better day now. Just remember: whenever you are having a crap day, someone else is having such a bad day that they could only aspire to have a crap day!

What a feast of colours! It's why I knit and follow blogs. What a way to brighten a dismal day,

I literally just discovered Malabrigo. It's beyond my ability to describe. Total sensory overload!
I'm so sorry about the teeny tiny Jaywalker--been there, done that. I do hope you'll give it another try someday. I felt really, really good after I wrestled with the pattern and figured out how to make it fit my own foot. I think you would enjoy that feeling too!
p.s. Nordic mitten... sigh! It's going to be magnificent. I love that pattern to distraction.

Sandy,
I made a double roll brim hat in my malabrigo. It was awesome. Then I dipped it up and down a bit in soapy water and let it drain in the sink. Finally I put it on the radiators to dry........it lost its roll and spunk. HELP!

I just learned how to do a basic knitting stitch last night... your blog is such an inspiration!

I too have some coveted Princess Yarn - am waiting till the olympics finish to give it a go! Such a shame about the sock but the other projects are lush. Sadly we can't get Malabrigio over here....will have to hit the net!

I found a way around the fit issue on the Jaywalkers. I used one size up needles (2s instead of 1s that I usually use for the Opal)for the leg and then used the right size (for me) (1s) for the heel flap and sole. I continued with the 2s for the instep and even though I usually have to tug, pull, and beg my handknit socks to go over my heel I can get these on with no problem. I wear a size 7 1/2 wide (D) shoe and am using Opal yarn on 76 stitches. I'm getting 10/12 stitches/rows to the inch on the sole with plain stockinette. It matches well with the bias fabric created on the instep with the twos.

Love that hat -- didn't see the cable at first, but that's okay. It looks so very soft and warm. I've taken the oath. ; )
The mitten is GORGEOUS! I've got tears in my eyes, it's so pretty.
If anything, my Jaywalker is a bit too big, but very comfy. Will you try again?
Posted by: Vicki on 02.20.2006 AT 03:52 PM
Well, it happens. It sure is a pretty sock, though! I love the Malabrigo hat - double yum.

Mmmm, Malabrigo. I love love love that stuff. I knit a mistake rib scarf from it earlier this winter and it has gotten so much wear - I wear it every day and it's so warm and lovely. I'm knitting a hat from two strands right now, doubled (two different colors, it looks really cool). Mmmm, need more!!

Maybe they are to become Jay Walker mittens perhaps, non?
:D

I try not to worry too much about size...I knit with the mentality of "surely, it will fit -someone-!"
And I love the colors in that Nordic Mitten...so pretty!

I love that hat pattern. I have made several of them in solid colors, it is a great pattern. Now you have me lusting after some of that yarn:)
Sorry to hear the sock does not fit. I hate it when that happens.

Oh crikey, I just realised it's Grumpalong Day tomorrow....

OMG, me tooooooooooo!! I cast on for the smaller version (long, narrow feet) and when it didn't fit, I ripped and cast on the larger, and did NOT TRY ON!!!! so here we are, owners of gorgeous JW socks and we can't wear them. I figure I have an early birthday gift for DD ..not ripping these babies at all!!

You know what you have to do: You love the yarn, you love the sock, it does not fit. Rip, rip, RIP!!! You'll be glad you did. ;-)

Oh Cinderella, the sock doesn't fit??? Crap! I hate it when that happens. But oooohh, that yarn is gorgeous!!
And the nordic mitten...has me drooling. I kind of like to weave in the ends--is that sick, or what??!
xoxo

Oh I love that hat. I think you can see the cable just fine.
The mitten is beautiful as well.
:-)
As for the socks, I love them. I have yet to try the Jaywalkers, but I really want to. I hope you can find someone that they fit.....

Blessings upon you!! Here I am, happily knitting my first Jaywalker, loving the yarn, the pattern and the colorway, but sort of wondering if it seemed, um, 'stiffer' than previous socks. Read your great blog, tried it on and you're absolutely right: won't go up over the heel! Thanks to you, I only have to frog about 4" and not an entire sock. Love the hat!

I love the hat! I love it so much I have printed out the pattern!! :)
Have a good holiday Monday! :)

I'm trying my best to avoid the jaywalker pattern. It's bad enough that I can't get boots to fit my cankles, I don't need tight fitting socks telling me I've got thick ankles!
Posted by: Steph VW on 02.20.2006 AT 09:43 AM
Everything so pretty!
Oh, don't give up on the Jaywalkers! When you get the size right, they're very cool. And slimming to the ankles when worn. :)
Posted by: Chris on 02.20.2006 AT 09:24 AM
Sandy - I LOVE the hat!! It is so pretty. That mitten...wow. You are brave to use all those colors - a weaving in nightmare ahead. But, hey it's a mitten, who's going to see them anyway!! :)
Posted by: Jackie on 02.20.2006 AT 09:22 AM
Love the Nordic mitten, that is great colorwork on it. It looks really challenging. I also like the cabled hat, and I've used that yarn, too, for a hat. (In more autumny tones, though.) You're just on a roll over there.

So sorry that the BEAUTEOUS sock does not fit. I'm sad about that. Slowly I'm letting go of feeling responsible for every jaywalker out there, but some I hold on to. ;-)
The hat and mitten are gorgeous though - two out of three ain't bad!
Posted by: Cara on 02.20.2006 AT 09:08 AM
So whatcha gonna do with the sock, then? And next year will you pretty please come to SPA? With Norma?
Posted by: Carole on 02.20.2006 AT 08:38 AM
Your jaywalker sock is gorgeous, and its the yarn that makes it, I think. I was sad to see that link for the yarn is dead - perhaps (alas) there is no more.
I'm sorry it doesn't fit. Could it be frogged and reknit on bigger needles? (What do I know? I've never knit a sock.)
