04.01.2006 :: japanese umbrella pine: japanese umbrella pine

That is what I repeated to myself over and over and over today. We went to a parent tour at UNH today and as luck would have it, there was a flower show in the Whittemore Center, the hockey arena. As the rest of the family took in the long, looong wall of hall of famers (or something) I took a gander at the plants in the FREE part of the flower show. I fell in love with a Japanese Umbrella Pine. Perhaps you should know that Pine trees are a specific love of mine. And I'd love to find a different yet slow growing one for my yard. I don't think the Japanese Umbrella Pine fits the bill though as it can grow to be 30 feet tall.
So, there I was sore back and all: hoofing my way around the campus after an hour long back cramper ride. I really AM better than I was, just not ALL better and the back firmly reminded me of this fact today. And it was HOT. I don't appreciate this season skipping. Please. One season at a time.
So, to review: me, sweating, hurting, mumbling "japanese umbrella pine" frequently. Poor Bethany, really. It's bad enough to have to be seen with your parents, but THIS?
When we got home, though, this is what greeted me in the evening. A good sign, no?

And that was NO April Fools.

Ooh, what a pretty rainbow! Since you keep track of the skies in blogger-land, I thought I'd write to say that I enjoy reading your blog and posted a picture of the Seattle sky in a storm on Monday. :-)

Sciadopitys verticillata? Same one? Depends on the cultural conditions. My cousin had one on the cape that was HUGE. Mine is ten years old and about 8 feet tall, and narrow. My cousin's was the happier one.

Beautiful rainbow! One of my favorite sights. Makes me sure that all is right!
Hoped you liked UNH. My son will be a freshman there in Sept. We really like the school and what it has to offer. We'll be there this weekend, sorry to have missed the flower show, heard it is nice.
Feel better

UNH, my Alma Mater! I love the flower show at the Whit. It's a good sign that Spiring is coming!

My two favorite pine trees in my yard are weepers of some kind - can't remember at the moment the specifics. They stand like sentinals guarding my front door.

I thought the Japanese umbrella pine was a slow-grower. No? They are gorgeous. (and they do get big, as you noted)

I think that's a healing rainbow, boding well for you. :)

Do you like mugho pines?

Gorgeous rainbow -- love those double ones!

I think pines are a lot like hostas -- people think two or three kinds of Christmas trees when they think "pine," and a sea of green under the shade of a tree, maybe with a little variegation, when "hosta" comes to mind, but there's an amazing range of size, shape and color in both. My favorites in the pine family are many of the weeping varieties. ; )

Now that's a sky photo! I haven't seen a rainbow in a long time...thanks.
You would love the variety of beautiful pine trees in Japan. I'm sure you could find a smaller variation that would work in your yard if you did a little research.

A rainbow is such good luck! Can't imagine the goodness a double rainbow brings!

Ooh! What a pretty rainbow!
If you are looking for some spring weather, there's plenty in Michigan. 50 degree days and thunderstorm warnings galore. I'll gladly send it your way. :)

Beautiful rainbow! I was looking for one yesterday, thinking I might see one so I could photograph it for YOU. I'm so glad that instead you got to see one for your own self!

What a beautiful rainbow. That must have put a smile on your face.

Oh! A double rainbow; it is so pretty!

I hope you are feeling better soon!

Slow growing and pine in the same sentence? Erm, didn't thing such an animal existed. My current favorites are Mugo pines which I've planted in front of my house to cover the exposed foundation- the grower informed us they could take heavy pruning and would fill as much or as little space as we liked.

Poor Bethany indeed. But what a beautiful double rainbow. Amazing!

Lovely rainbow. I'm with you -- winter into summer; every year it's the same. If you want spring, you need to travel somewhere else because there ain't no Spring in Massachusetts!
