I was not a cat person. Until Fig came to live with us.
Fig was born in a dumpster, abandoned by his first family and came to be on our doorstep with apparent randomness. But perhaps not, after all. The first week in our home, he ate our parakeet. Despite the murder, we began a love affair that grows to this day.
I am a cat person. But more than that, I'm a Fig person!

Fig is freakin' adorable! That face -- how could anyone, (even a bird-loving cat-hater), resist it?

Posted by: Mary on 04.07.2006 AT 01:42 PM

I want a Fig too!!! What a great cat....well...despite the bird issue....but he redeamed himself with the gerbil!! Great pics too!!

Posted by: Crazy For Yarn on 04.06.2006 AT 06:39 PM

Oh, I think I'm a Fig person now, too.

All four of my cats have come to me through odd circumstances that I did not plan, and I love them all the more for it. They can also spot a sucker for miles.

Posted by: Snow on 04.06.2006 AT 05:09 PM

That's how it starts. Now the cats just show up in my garden, and by the time the weather changes to snow - they're ours! (we've had up to 6 at one time) Please - SPAY and NEUTER your cats!!!

Posted by: Jo-Anne on 04.06.2006 AT 04:03 PM

I love cats, but you are a saint for keeping one that ate your bird...I have my limits!

Posted by: Beverly on 04.06.2006 AT 02:23 PM

Oh, my goodness, I feel terrible that I'm laughing about the demise of your parakeet, but the murderous Fig -- it's just hilarious! Isn't he a sweetie.

Posted by: Vicki on 04.06.2006 AT 12:22 PM

Fig is cute. Good F.

Posted by: Samantha on 04.06.2006 AT 09:58 AM

Still giggling over eating your parakeet....

Posted by: Tracy on 04.06.2006 AT 06:10 AM

My favorite Fig photo is the one where he is inside looking out at the birdie in the snow. There's something about it--a peace, a longing, but a wisdom. Cuz baby, it's cold outside. That Fig is one smart magoo.

Fig is such a cutie! Total cat person here!

Posted by: Tam on 04.05.2006 AT 07:58 PM

Oh, and: Murderers need love too.

Posted by: Norma on 04.05.2006 AT 05:29 PM

Huh? I didn't comment? Oh, crap, now I remember. Just when I was commenting on this post last night, I was placing a complaint call to AOL for taking my computer hostage with their so-called UPgrade. Which, you will not be too surprised to hear, they deNIED could happen. Funny thing, after all was said and done and I'd run the umpteen-twenty scans they recommended, the only thing that fixed it back was to UNinstall the up- I mean DOWNgrade. Ugh. Bastards. Oops, sorry I swore in your comments.

F is for FIG, all right. And a few choice other words, too.

Posted by: Norma on 04.05.2006 AT 05:28 PM

Oh I had such a good laugh at you falling in love with the cat that ate your parakeet. It's really quite perfect, of course I'm a bird person, dog person, cat person, okay I'm just an animal person.

Posted by: Rebekah on 04.05.2006 AT 03:46 PM

What a beautiful face! Oh, he's lovely.

And isn't it funny how cats pick out their humans?

Posted by: Imbrium on 04.05.2006 AT 02:47 PM

That is one lovely cat. I want to bury my face in his fur!
I posted a sky pic for you. :-)

Posted by: Carrie on 04.05.2006 AT 01:43 PM

i'm smitten with the fig too. bring me some figgy pudding

Posted by: maryse on 04.05.2006 AT 12:34 PM

He's beautiful! It's easy to be smitten with a face like that!

Posted by: Wendi on 04.05.2006 AT 12:29 PM

FIG! I love Fig. :-)

Posted by: Beth S. on 04.05.2006 AT 10:49 AM

"despite the murder"... what a FABULOUS segway to talking about your love for Fig. Had me laughing outloud at my desk.

Posted by: Kate on 04.05.2006 AT 10:46 AM

Fig knew you were a cat person, and that is what matters!

Posted by: meg on 04.05.2006 AT 10:37 AM

Look how adorable the Fig-ster is. But I'm betting he could kick Igor's ass.

Posted by: claudia on 04.05.2006 AT 09:21 AM

Fig is one handsome boy....I love the pics. I am not a cat person either till I met Miss Peaches. Now we are smitten.

Posted by: Maureen on 04.05.2006 AT 08:55 AM

I'm not a cat person myself, but that first picture is really great - composition, depth of field, lighting. Awesome job!

Posted by: Cara on 04.05.2006 AT 08:36 AM

I love Fig! He looks so much like one of my dearly departed cats.

Posted by: Wendy on 04.05.2006 AT 07:35 AM

I love the cat pictures! I have always been a cat person and never a bird person. :) So yea I smiled when I saw he ate your bird. LOL Sorry! :) He is beautiful! I have one cat now I saved after it was hit by a car, and I say I'll never have another one. That is, I must admit, a lie. ;)

Posted by: Lisa on 04.05.2006 AT 07:24 AM

Only you could love a cat that ate the family parakeet! But he looks so sweet. And I'd rather have a cat than a bird anyway. ;-)

Posted by: Carole on 04.05.2006 AT 07:07 AM

Fig looks so cute sleeping!

I can attest to the "I am not a cat person" but I've had my two oldest cats now for 10 years, and I'll never be without another cat, ever again. :)

Posted by: Helen on 04.05.2006 AT 06:52 AM

I love the shot of the Fig silouette against the winter branches.

Posted by: Karin on 04.05.2006 AT 03:44 AM

Fig is a beautiful kitty. "I am a cat person. But more than that, I'm a Fig person" this really touched me. Almost everyone says, I am a cat person, but it is really the special cat in their lives whom they're taken with :).

Posted by: Isela on 04.05.2006 AT 01:44 AM

Cats do what cats do.

You were "chosen" and that is very special!

Posted by: Jenni on 04.04.2006 AT 10:49 PM

I, too, am a cat person.. such a wonderful face!

Posted by: Teyani on 04.04.2006 AT 10:44 PM

I gasped when I read about the parakeet. I don't think I can love Fig the way you do.

:)

Posted by: grumperina on 04.04.2006 AT 10:38 PM

He has similar facial markings to our Dougal, who, while not appearing on our doorstep quite like Fig, was adopted into our family. And, um, also enjoys the taste of 'bird tartare'. We've never had a bird in the house, but Dougal is an outdoor cat during the day, and mighty proud of his hunting skills...

Posted by: Rachel H on 04.04.2006 AT 10:33 PM

Wow, he must really have won you over!! Hi Fig! Um, care to tell us about the parakeet?!

Posted by: Chris on 04.04.2006 AT 10:11 PM

How many 'non-cat' people have been turned by a single kitty in their lives? And it happens so fast, as I guess you figured out, if you kept Fig after he ate your parakeet! (more details?)

Posted by: janna on 04.04.2006 AT 10:05 PM

He must have many endearing qualities if you forgave him that first week's indiscretion!

Posted by: Jan on 04.04.2006 AT 09:14 PM

Fig is beautiful ... I am charmed by the little black bit at the bottom of his nose.

Posted by: Ruth on 04.04.2006 AT 09:14 PM

OH, those are some of the sweetest photos. Such a little sweetie! Those eyes are priceless, and you can see his love for you when he looks into the camera. Lucky you!
