05.14.2006 :: The Good, The bad and The Ugly

I borrow my title from Carole for the day because it fits like a glove.
The Good:
Yesterday I made my way to the NH Sheep and Wool festival to meet up with many other soggy bloggers. What a wonderful day! There was Norma, Carole and Dale, Wendy, Dave, Sean, Manise (hmm, you don't have a blog yet?), Blogless Sharon, Maryse, MamaCate, Elisa (I'm still repeating, it "Sparkle Hayter"), Stitchy (who I regret that I did not get to speak with), Kellee, Amy Boogie (Who I almost did not recognize), JuliaFC, Laurie,Kathy (who may or may not be impersonated), PumpkinMama,Cheryl. And now my memory is failing me because I'm sure I forgot someone very near and dear to me so I apologize for having a memory lapse, but I had fun with you too. There is nothing like being soggy with friends to remind you what is important in life.

Snuggle bunny in NH. Wendy is in love with him.
There's a yarn story but it has to wait until tomorrow. It is that good.
The Bad:
If I say rain to you, you possibly think of a nice, steady dropping of water from the sky. No. This is not the weather that we have been having for 2 days straight, going on 3. It's more like deluge after deluge sporatically broken up with driving rain. There is a lot of water falling from the sky. So much so that I do believe I should be ordering me an ark. Or two. The ride home from the NH Sheep and Wool was not fun. Let's not talk about walking around in mud or skirting around puddles that could pass for small ponds.

My hands are actually sore from the white knuckle gripping of the steering wheel.
This helped a bit:

But they cost me $1.75. Worth every penny, I'd say.
The Ugly:
My basement
DSC06560.JPG
This is bad AND ugly, believe me. We have had water in the basement 4 times, including this one since we moved in 17 years ago. All of them involved extreme weather systems. All of them represent a bad, bad time of life. When there is water in the basement, there is a miserable husband. He does not sleep, paces the floor, walks up and down the stairs thousands of times to check on things and eventually dons rain gear and bails water out the door (Which I'm sure drips back in, but I'M not going to tell him, are you?) We have 2 pumps furiously trying to empty the water but it fills in faster than it pumps.
So, to get even uglier, we have no heat until the furnace dries out (with any luck it will dry out...again) and it's 45 degrees outside. We will soon be freezing our begeezus off. We have no hot water for showers. Stand clear, I'm beginning to reek. You have been warned. And I keep hearing things crash around down there scaring the life out of me. It's the floaty things. Things should NOT be floating in the basement. It's a bad sign.
Yes, it's ugly, but not as ugly as I am going to be tomorrow morning without a shower.

This is a way late reply, but I just wanted to say how sorry I was for you. I have had to deal with flooded basements many times over the past few summers, and I know how hard, frustrating, sad, annoying, etc. the whole situation can be. It is the ultimate feeling of helplessness, knowing that you cannot do much to stop the incoming water. Hope everything turned out okay, and that you are nice, dry, clean, and sweet smelling (you and the basement) again.

The photo of the basement makes me want to cry! I am SO sorry, what a tee total bummer.

Posted by: Sandra on 05.17.2006 AT 10:00 PM

Yowza... Hang in there!

I love Sparkle Hayter's books. :)

Posted by: Chris on 05.16.2006 AT 10:43 PM

Sandy! I'm on vacation but we saw the news and they showed the flooding in Peabody and I IMMEDIATELY thought of you! I'm so sorry! My husband was shocked at the pictures of Peabody. I hope the worst is over for you. L, C

Posted by: Cara on 05.16.2006 AT 10:54 AM

Oh no! Oh, that's horrible...I have to look away.

Um...at least you have a lot of handknits to keep you warm?

Posted by: Imbrium on 05.15.2006 AT 04:42 PM

Fuckin' A. Definitely Fuckin' A. Good, warm, dry thoughts to you.

Posted by: Vicki on 05.15.2006 AT 01:12 PM

I thought this would happen. Ouch.

No wool was harmed, I hope??

Posted by: claudia on 05.15.2006 AT 11:12 AM

Oh, youpoor dear. A flooded basement is the pits. My husband would be swearing, swearing and swearing. Best wishes surviving the floods.

Posted by: gail on 05.15.2006 AT 10:00 AM

Doesn't this weather suck!!! We have the opposite problem at our house - a leaking roof. And this is a roof we had replaced 2 years ago. Don't get me started!!

Anyway, I can relate - to the sogginess and the miserable husband. This rain better stop soon - I'm starting to feel moldy.

Posted by: Lisa on 05.15.2006 AT 09:09 AM

That definitely puts the "ug" in ugly! I'll keep hoping for the rain to stop for you.

Posted by: Diane on 05.15.2006 AT 08:27 AM

I can't even tell you how upset I am about your basement.
Do you have a shopvac? One of those wet/dry vacuums? I've pulled a lot of water out of our basement really quickly with one of those.
Should I bring you mine?

Posted by: stephanie on 05.15.2006 AT 01:05 AM

Bet you wish you saved that swear for this post. That's OK, you can say it two times in a row,
Li

Posted by: Li_B on 05.14.2006 AT 11:46 PM

My two year old says.. look mess that floor is wet.. it has water.. see even he gets it!!
OI! I am glad to live on a hill..
But Have been through this myself.. not fun!!

Posted by: Denise on 05.14.2006 AT 10:46 PM

Gee, that basement picture sure looks familiar.

*sigh*

Posted by: Beth S. on 05.14.2006 AT 09:48 PM

This weather we're having is getting old real fast. Sorry to hear about you basement.

Posted by: Kelly on 05.14.2006 AT 07:55 PM

Surely, a hotel room for a night or two would be entirely justified? Hot showers, warm bed, room service to return to after bailing. You wouldn't want to cap off your festival experience with the flu from stress and cold.

At least your sewers haven't backed up. Yet.

Posted by: Marie on 05.14.2006 AT 07:50 PM

Oh!, sorry about the flooded basement.
Love Sparkle Hayter's Robin Hudson series it is darker, and more adult than Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books. Great books and just as funny if not funnier.
1)What's A Girl Gotta Do, 2)Nice Girls Finish Last, 3)Revenge Of The Cootie Girls, 4)The Last Manly Man, 5)Chelsea Girl Murders.

Posted by: Paula on 05.14.2006 AT 06:46 PM

yuck ,get out the wet vac and head for sandy's.

Posted by: blogless sharon on 05.14.2006 AT 06:44 PM

Great job with the Good Bad and Ugly. Your ugly really sucks, though. So sorry! Want me and Dale to come with buckets and mops? We would, ya know.
And I meant to say, too, Sandy, you are SO hot.

Posted by: Carole on 05.14.2006 AT 06:43 PM

Sandy! Your basement! You poor thing. I'm so glad you had a good day on Saturday because really - you need all the strength you can get! ;)

Posted by: Bookish Wendy on 05.14.2006 AT 06:41 PM

!!!
I hope the rain stops soon and everything dries out quickly!

Posted by: Donna on 05.14.2006 AT 05:53 PM

So nice to meet you the other day!! We're having some pretty erious flooding here too, I'm putting a few pictures up soon. No heat/hot water for me either. Our basement is under five feet of water.

Posted by: Cheryl on 05.14.2006 AT 05:42 PM

Hope your basement is emptying out. I can't beleive all this rain. My road is washed out in two spots. The driving was a little nerve wracking yesterday. I was glad to get off the turnpike and on to the sideroads. M&M's is a good idea for trips like that.

Posted by: Maureen on 05.14.2006 AT 04:47 PM

Oh yikes! Water in the basement is just no fun. I hope it dries up soon and you manage to have a Happy Mother's Day despite it all.

Posted by: Jessica on 05.14.2006 AT 04:24 PM

Deb was there? Damn.
Great to see you if only at the end. I'm going to remind you about the Tuesday thing. Really.

Posted by: julia fc on 05.14.2006 AT 03:58 PM

Hey there! I'm bummed I didn't get to talk to you yesterday! Everyone was kind of hunkered down under their rain gear, so I think I missed more people than I'm aware of.

I nearly passed out when I scrolled down and saw the picture of your basement. It's one of my big fears of home ownership. I hope the weather clears up soon and you can get things dried out soon. What a huge mess. More M&Ms might be in order.

Posted by: Debbie on 05.14.2006 AT 03:50 PM

I posted a sky for you. I hope you will view it in the spirit of "that's what my sky will look like soon" instead of thinking I'm trying to rub it in.
:-)
Hope you're dry soon!

Posted by: Carrie on 05.14.2006 AT 03:02 PM

I feel your pain ... we have water dripping in through the roof and coming up through the basement ... we're going to turn into an ark and float away before long.

FIngers crossed that the Weather moves through and that the stuff in your basement can be salvaged.

Posted by: Ruth on 05.14.2006 AT 02:40 PM

Woohoo, bailing party at Sandy's. Grab your buckets and let's head up! Last one there gets to start the siphon going.
It was so great to finally meet you in person. I haven't laughed so much in a long time.

Posted by: Dave Daniels on 05.14.2006 AT 02:35 PM

Ugh. I thought of you all trudging around in the rain and the mud yesterday, and I tried to convince myself you were all having a miserable time without me. (Didn't work. I still wished I was there!)
Our (old) basement flooded a few years back--it was a total nightmare. Here's hoping for dry weather SOON!

Posted by: Katy on 05.14.2006 AT 01:55 PM

Damn, it might be worth it to join the local gym, just for a shower.
Or maybe water warmed on the stove for a sponge bath? (Maybe, if you do it just right, hubby will be less miserable? winkwinknudgenudge)
SO sorry about the basement. 'Round here, if you walk outside your skin crackles and falls off. I put the outside thermometer in the sun and it topped out at just over 120. It's hooooooooooooooooooooooot.

Posted by: Carrie on 05.14.2006 AT 01:51 PM

In the "good" department, it was wonderful to see you again! (And wherever did you get that marvelous sweater :-)

Sorry to hear/see the basement. I've been there and it's not fun. I am sending you "dry" vibes.

Posted by: Kathy on 05.14.2006 AT 01:22 PM

I did not recognize you either. I'm glad I got to meet you. I hope the flood goes away soon. Happy Mom's Day. I hope it gets better.

Posted by: Amy Boogie on 05.14.2006 AT 01:20 PM

I'm so sorry! Happy Mother's day anyway!

Posted by: AmyDe on 05.14.2006 AT 12:53 PM

Oh, crap! What a way to end the day!

I hope you guys dry out SOON!

Posted by: June on 05.14.2006 AT 12:31 PM

Oh, Sandy - I hope your basement is okay!!!

If it makes you feel any better, our basement isn't flooded (this time), but we live in NH (right in the Merrimack Valley, where it's worst, of course) in a 150+ year old house & my parent's ceiling started leaking this morning.

AND it's supposed to stop by...umm....Wednesday! :)

But atleast since you can't go outside and work, it means you're stuck in, where you can KNIT!!! :) :) :)

Posted by: Becca on 05.14.2006 AT 12:18 PM

It was great to meet you yesterday. If it makes you feel better, we are in the same boat (ha ha!) with flooded basement, 2 pumps running (a 3rd on its way from my dryer brother's house on the S. shore) and a stressed to the max husband. Here's to dryer times.

Posted by: Pumpkinmama on 05.14.2006 AT 12:13 PM

oh boy. i'm sorry about the soggy basement. ugh.

Posted by: maryse on 05.14.2006 AT 12:08 PM

What a bummer end to a fun day! I am sorry that I missed out on seeing you guys, but I have a difficult time driving in rainstorms (car accident). Maybe this summer before the Boston KOAC we can all get together? And of course that sweet little bunny face is adorable! It is so hard to resist them when they are that young.

Hope you can get that basement dry soon. RI will still getting rain for 2 more days after today... YUCK!

=:8

Posted by: Kimberly on 05.14.2006 AT 11:58 AM

Now, aren't you even gladder that you came and spent the day with MEMEMEMEMEMEME! to recharge your soggy batteries before having to face this....I'm not going to use your euphemism "fudgin'" -- I'm going to come right out and say FUCKIN' -- situation? Oy vey, there is very little worse than a flooded basement. Poor you. We will forgive you if you reek, and still love you anyway. I hope the husband does not blow a fuse. :)

Posted by: Norma on 05.14.2006 AT 11:50 AM

It was really great meeting you- thanks for the mention...yes, I'm blogless. It was fun despite all the wet and the lake sized puddles. I finally left when I realized I couldn't feel some of the toes on my very soaked feet. Glad I brought dry socks and shoes for the ride home.

Oh, my God, I'm so sorry your basement got flooded and all the floatage including your Bissell! Hope this wet sponge of a sky moves elsewhere to share it's moisture. I think we've had enough and a blue sky would be very welcome about now!

Posted by: Manise on 05.14.2006 AT 11:40 AM

ohhhh, that SUCKS! I'm sorry. I hope it stops raining and that the basement stuff can be salvaged.
