07.06.2006 :: No hedging

My favorite weekend activity was one that I did not photograph. I made the journey to Patternworks and spent a lovely hour or so amongst yarn. I carried around a hedgehog kit for quite a while, only prying him out of my hands at the register. I mean, do I REALLY need a hedgehog? Cute as he is, the answer was a sad NO.
I did however spend a bit of time at the koigu wall. It was there that I got inspired.

I have one word for you! MITTENS! It's been a while since you've heard this here, hasn't it? Don't you love the colors together? I did.
Until this:

Not enough contrast!
Believe me. The colors worked out much better in my head. I'm disappointed. Now, I have no hedgehog OR purple colors to play with.
Don't you hate it when that happens?

There was some Trekking sock progress over the weekend. The sock did not Trek. But it did indeed drive up to New Hampshire and sit by a lake. That's a trek in my book!
And today? Even though it feels a lot like grumpy Tuesday, it's actually Thursday.
Thank goodness for that.
But now, here I am at the end of my blog entry and I'm left with one thought.....I coulda had a hedgehog.

Is everyone knitting trekking socks except me?

(Love yours!)

You shoulda had a hedgehog. I couldn't resist him/her after seeing Claudia's either. And couldn't decide on one color so I ordered 3 colors.

Love that Kiogu!

i nearly bought that hedgehog when i was there recently too!! it was just tooooo cute not to try.

ended up getting the felted sheep tote and $100 worth of yarn instead. :-D

probably shoulda gone with the hedgie. ;)

I just made the hedgehog for my son's 7th birthday, and he loved it! I was secretly hoping he'd cast it aside, so that it would be mine, but no luck! I took the budget-friendly road and bought the pattern alone, so that I could use up some stash yarn. Of course, that only led to another yarn purchase to make Hog #1 a n friend....but, in the knitting world, still qualifying (aka rationalizing) as a "budget purchase"....anyway, the pattern is definitely worth the $7...

I bought the pattern, in anticipation of using Claudia's suggestion. I have some leftover fun fur from my first knitting project (*gasp*).

I like the mittens. Despite the lack of contrast. I love the colors.

I too passed on a hedgehog. It's probably in the future though. By the way, love that trekking color. What is it?

Posted by: Diane E. on 07.07.2006 AT 09:12 PM

I love Patternworks too. It is about an hour away for me. I have been thinking mittens too. I just dyed some yarn the other night for a pair. I love the suggestion of the Sunset mittens.

Too bad about the mitten. That's EXACTLY what happened to me recently. (So I started a sweater instead). Great colors, but they just blended into one colorway when I tried to use them in a stranded pattern. I haven't given up yet; I'm determined to have mittens done BEFORE the snow flies for a change. :-)

That hedgehog is adorable. I don't know how you were able to resist him!

I like Beth S.'s idea of stranding the purples for your mittens. I think it'd look great. :-)

No Hedgehog or any cuddly felted animal in my shop visits this weekend either. :( But here's something to cheer you up. I took this photo today during lunch and knew I had to share it with you!

Okay, so the stranded thing didn't work out--but you have the perfect opportunity here to do a watercolor kind of project. Knit with the darkest one for a while, then alternate rows with one slightly lighter, then knit with just the second color for a while, then start adding in the lightest... it would be like a watercolor painting. You could call it "Just Before Sunrise" or something to that effect. :-)

Oh, yes, you need that hedgehog! And more Koigu for your mittens! Time for another trip to Patternworks!

Posted by: Susan on 07.07.2006 AT 08:26 AM

Oh, that purple is yummy - I bet you can do something else with it.

What pattern are you using for your Trekking sock?

Posted by: Chris on 07.07.2006 AT 08:08 AM

But you DO need a huggable hedgehog. You really do. You may not think so at the moment, but once it's finished, you will realize that your life was not complete without it.

I named mine Hank, and he sits on the kitchen pass-through, so that he's at eye level. Makes me happy every time I see him.

(You don't necessarily need the kit, though. I made mine with fun fur from the bargain bin, and Cascade 220. Helps to cut down on the cost.)

What's goin' on over here??? Mittens??? Hooray, let's hear it for mittens!! Your mittens are always wonderful, although I can see the lack of contrast that you're talkin about.

Can you believe it? It's almost mitten weather!!

Thank you for your note, sweetie. I love you to pieces, dontchano. It's friends like you who make this world a better place.
xoxoxo

I've been craving the hedgehog kit, too. Love the purples - you can still play with them, but maybe you need to add a few colors into the playgroup first. Who could object to spending more time with Koigu?

Posted by: Shanti on 07.06.2006 AT 09:23 PM

Ok -- I know that you are bummed about the hedgehog, but you have one smokin' Trekking sock there!

Posted by: Kathy on 07.06.2006 AT 09:16 PM

Patternworks... is a real place? Where you can spend money on yarn?? I thought it was a fictional catalog that arrives in my house on an irregular basis. Oh wait, DH says when my imaginary internet friends tell me something is real, it's still imaginary... (what DOES he think happens to all the Dulaan stuff we mail out?)

Posted by: Tee on 07.06.2006 AT 08:10 PM

I need a hedgehog! In a better color. I so love/covet Claudia's.

I love those mitten colors. Maybe if you got a skein of a still darker purple to help things along?

Ya know, the only reason I want to visit NH is to hit Patternworks and KeepSake Quilting. Not sure I would survive it. *L*

Posted by: Cookie on 07.06.2006 AT 07:30 PM

Lovely purple shades, though! I'm sorry they didn't work out as planned, but I'm sure they have a great purpose, anyway.

Posted by: Charity on 07.06.2006 AT 07:23 PM

I don't need a hedgehog either. Somehow that fact didn't stop my from snatching up the pattern the first time I saw it live. Now to find more hours in the day to knit...

Posted by: Rachel H on 07.06.2006 AT 07:22 PM

I love that hedgehog too. My daughter wanted to make a baby gift for a friend and picked out a non-felted hedgehog. It's so cute, but I think I like the felted one better.

Anyway, I was just about to post a photo of my PS purple project and the Koigu purples remind me of yours. I'm making Charlottes Web, perhaps yours would work for that?

I've been going to Keepsake Quilting for years and when Patternworks opened up next door it was like a dream come true. Too bad it's 3000 miles away from me. I can't wait for our next trip to NH!

Patterworks? What is this Patternworks of which you speak? lol (Ok, I'll Google it...)
I want one of those rams? Have you seen them? They are Aran knitted bodies. Cute ;)
I love your mitten yarns. Maybe try and dye one of them a little darker. (Oops...I know, I know...) Still...It's pretty.

Posted by: Dave Daniels on 07.06.2006 AT 05:33 PM

I LOVE that little hedgehog! I don't NEED one either, but he keeps calling to me. Hopefully I can resist.

Posted by: dani on 07.06.2006 AT 05:09 PM

LOL. You could do a commercial. Slap your head and say, "I coulda had a V- ... I mean...a HEDGEHOG!"

Posted by: Norma on 07.06.2006 AT 04:50 PM

I love Patternworks! When I was visiting my friend last October, we journeyed through the pouring rain and flooded streets to find it so I could spending some time petting the yarn. It proved she was a good friend, as she does not knit and didn't once rush me once we found it.

The purples are lovely, even if they didn't knit up as you imagined!

Posted by: SpaceCase on 07.06.2006 AT 04:36 PM

Sandy, get the Hedgehog pattern and use cheapie yarn for the critter. Caascade 220 works like a charm and pop into the A.C. Wright for some fun fur.

I advocate for the hedgehog on a budget! (Its a wicked fun pattern to knit).

Posted by: claudia on 07.06.2006 AT 04:14 PM

Aw, I love those hedgehogs! You can still order one, I give you permission. Sometimes you need a furry little critter (that doesn't eat or poop) to pep you up!
As for the koigu, I guess when you order the hedgehog kit, you'll need to get a few other colors to make your mittens, so you'll have a few purple pairs instead of only one!
It does feel like a grumpy Tuesday, doesn't it? ...sigh...
