07.19.2006 :: Rock! Rock Lobster!*

Sunday I got to do something I've wanted to do for a long time. Host a lobster bake. Lobster BOIL would be more accurate.
11 family members
12 lobsters

Cooked outdoors in Andy's beer brewing pot and huge gas burner:

10 pounds of steamers:

Grilled fresh from the garden corn on the cob (my favorite way to eat corn!!)

With the addition of marinated steak tips for the non seafood lovers in the crowd ( I know!), boiled red potatoes served with butter and kosher salt, smoked salmon spread and crackers and blueberry cake and sliced watermelon for dessert.
I hope to make this a yearly tradition, it was that fun. Although I had big plans for the leftovers, not one morsel of food was leftover. I have never seen a crowd eat so much and leave so happy. What more could a hostess ask for really? I mean, besides a leftover lobster roll for lunch the next day?

For some reason, I had added Yahoo.com to my list of spammers. Probably one was a spammer. But not ALL yahoo-ers are. So, you all got lumped into the spam category. I think I fixed it now. Let's hear a big YAHOO!

Yummy yummy yummy! I had a dream last night that I was trying to buy a lobster, but it was $100, so I went home empty handed. I think my subconcious wants lobster!

Posted by: Chrissy on 07.22.2006 AT 11:10 PM

I have never had Maine Lobster - nor have I had clams - we have shrimp and oysters down this way and have a low country boil.

One of these days I want to experience lobster and the fixins!

Next year we all crash the party! The menu sounds yummy. Sounds like a good time was had by all!

Posted by: Nannette on 07.21.2006 AT 07:59 PM

I wanna crash next year's party! That's pretty much all my favorite things right there on the table. Man oh man.

Oh, Lobstah bakes! How I miss them! We used to have them at the end of the school year every year, and on beach trips and such.

Sandy, you're killing me with this post!! When we were first married, we lived in Portland, Maine. On summer Sundays, we'd drive right to the pier and buy lobsters fresh from the trap, swing by a roadside stand on the way back to our apartment and pick up some corn. *Sigh*.

At least now we can still get the corn. ;-)

Posted by: Jan on 07.20.2006 AT 06:20 PM

You are SO mean! (glad you had such a great time - it looks WONDERFUL!)

Posted by: Jen on 07.20.2006 AT 01:43 PM

Oh, you're killing me! We get lots of great, fresh seafood on the west coast. But nothing like a real Atlantic lobster and steamers! Oh, what I'd do for some steamers.

Posted by: Jessica on 07.20.2006 AT 01:39 PM

Oh yjummm!! I'm so envious of it all (except the corn).

Posted by: margene on 07.20.2006 AT 12:00 PM

That sounds like my kind of feast!

Posted by: Dorothy B on 07.20.2006 AT 11:32 AM

Okay... if this comment doesn't go through, it's probably because I just fried my keyboard with all the drool. That looks freakin' fabulous. Yum.

Posted by: Vicki on 07.20.2006 AT 10:03 AM

Yum! I haven't had steamers in forever. I think it's time for a trip to my local fish mart.

Sounds like a great time!

Posted by: Susie on 07.20.2006 AT 09:55 AM

yum, YUM!!! How wonderful to have family all close by enough to be able to get together for a big family party such as this!!! Blessed indeed!! Oh...and if this is a yearly tradition......don't you remember you have a LONG, LOST COUSIN from Alabama that needs to be included??? Ha! Ha!

"we were at the beach . . .

everybody had . . . matching towels!"

Sigh . . . it's not easy being a displaced New Englander in DC. Particularly when I see photos of lobsters and steamers!

Posted by: Wendy on 07.20.2006 AT 07:10 AM

Wow, the food looks amazing.

Posted by: abi on 07.20.2006 AT 05:12 AM

Oh, my goodness! Those pictures make my mouth water! Looks like an amazing time :-)

oh hot damn! i was going to ask you to repost the link to the blueberry cake, and you read my mind. it's blueberry season round here! i'm SOOOOOOOOO making this this weekend!

Posted by: minnie on 07.19.2006 AT 11:04 PM

Wow! Those pictures made this misplaced Yankee miss all that good New England food! Steamers are one of the first things I get when we go home to visit. And, was that butter and sugar corn? You know, you can't get that in the south? It's too hot to grow it here. Jeesh, they don't know what they're missing!!! And that lobster roll. YUMMMO Haven't had one of those in years.
My hubby did take me out today (it's the birthday AGAIN!)for crab legs (my new favorite seafood),shrimp, scollops. Down here it's all plentiful, but shucks, no steamers!
Glad it was fun. I miss those New England Clam boils.

Posted by: Cara on 07.19.2006 AT 06:30 PM

Oh, and I forgot: that looks so GOOD! SO GOOD. And only 10 pounds of steamers? What did the others have with the lobster, corn and steak?

Posted by: Dave Daniels on 07.19.2006 AT 06:24 PM

"What more could a hostess ask for really?"
You could ask to hostess this for all your New England Knitterly Folks. Yes. That's what you could do. And no need to wait until next year. It's still July. And there's also August. And you are T-accessable. And I'm free on weekends. And I'll bring yarn. And beer. And a camera. And Yarn. And maybe even N and C and the others will all come, too, and bring yarn.

Posted by: Dave Daniels on 07.19.2006 AT 06:23 PM

Sounds really good! The B-52s are from Athens, GA. I heard Rock Lobster recently on XM...

Posted by: Paula on 07.19.2006 AT 06:08 PM

My mouth is WATERING. What you have there is the quintessential New England summer feast.

I love Andy and the nephew. I can't see their faces, but their body language says, "Whoaaaaa, awwwweesomme!"

Posted by: Norma on 07.19.2006 AT 05:52 PM

Don't you have a long lost cousin here in SC that needs to connect with family again????? I would love to have attended that feast!

Posted by: Leslie on 07.19.2006 AT 05:39 PM

I'm drooling over my keyboard.
Yum!

Posted by: Katy on 07.19.2006 AT 05:38 PM

yes, i'm with carole. can i come next year too?

can i? can i?

Posted by: maryse on 07.19.2006 AT 05:22 PM

That looks so good. My husband is a lobster fisherman, so you would think that I would get lots of lobster, but somehow, I never do. I like it plain, but my favourite is called creamed lobster. You cut up pre-cooked lobster and fry it in butter (lots) and then you add cream and simmer for a few minutes. The Goodwin family secret ingredients are adding a pinch of sugar with the lobster and then a few tsp. of vinegar. Serve on toast. This is what all the rich lobster captain's daughters have for their wedding meal.

Posted by: Samantha on 07.19.2006 AT 05:18 PM

Oh yum.

*drool*

Posted by: Imbrium on 07.19.2006 AT 05:14 PM

Can I come next year? Please? Pretty please?

Posted by: Carole on 07.19.2006 AT 05:08 PM

God, that sounded fabulous! I am by family relation a New Englander, and found I must return in order to get steamers and lobster.
