07.24.2006 :: A Saturday in Rockport

It has been so long since I've tried to sleep late that I forgot how annoying the neighbors' bird is. I have nothing against birds, but try to sleep when the bird emits a loud wolf call whistle every nanosecond and (apparently unknown to me, they now have a second bird who is not trained in a particular whistle but is fond of the extremely loud ear piercing SHRIEK) answered by Bird 2 as a SQUACK!
Let's review, shall we?
Whistle....SQUACK
Whistle....SQUACK.
Repeat ad infinitum until your head feels like it may blow off.
But you know, an annoying morning on vacation is infinitely better than a work morning, don't you agree?
Saturday, Andy and I took advantage of our teen free life (Bethany was on a girl's weekend in New Hampshire and Derek had been in Miami all week on business, they are both home now) and drove to Rockport to enjoy the wonderful evening. By bringing my camera along, YOU got to come too.
Bearskin Neck: a shoppers paradise. Also a browser's delight.

Not much of a saturday sky to speak of. Beautiful nonetheless.
Secret walkway:

This reminds me of the pictures of doorways, walkways and roadways that I took on my trip to Bermuda. I should dig those out. I guess I have a thing for 'WAYS.
Raise your right hand and promise me that if you are ever in Rockport, you will stop at the strudel shop AND the fudge shop and indulge. It does not matter if you are dieting or watching what you eat. You MUST sample these things while here. You may as well take the oath, I'm not going to give it up.

Yum. Apple Strudel.
The Rockport Fudgery:

Yum. Fudge. (Along with a picture of a mystery couple. They look nice, don't they? Does anyone know them? They are pondering whether they should buy some fudge. The answer is YES)

Bunch 'o buoys.

Heh.

All seagulls on board!

This view is officially known as Motif number 1. I can't make this stuff up!

Lots of Dinghys. Or is it dinghies? Dinghi?

Fig says, "Did I get a morsel of fudge or a crumb of apple strudel from their Rockport trip? A seagull on a platter? No. Nothing."

Sandy, At least you could send Fig over to rough up those birds a little bit on your behalf. I've been waking to the Halifax Harbour foghorn. It starts when the ships start moving around in the harbour, around the hour of "freaking-early o'clock in the morning". Unfortunately, I can't mess with the foghorn. And it's too hot to sleep with my window closed AND pillows strapped to my head to muffle the sound.

Yep. I'm quite familiar with the fudgery and the strudel place. I think I even recognize the hidden walkway!

thanks for the tour down memory lane. My grandmother lived in Rockport and my aunt and uncle still do!!! I spent many wonderful days both summer and winter on bearskin neck. I grew up on the North Shore near Marblehead. Looks like you enjoyed your visit

Oh my goodness. Fig is so dang cute!

Loved your pics of Rockport. I haven't been there is a while and I do so love Bearskin Neck - especially the country store with the caliope. My father used to take me when I was a young teen on May 31st for the photographers shoot of Motif#1. It is one of the most photographed buildings in the US. Point to self - go to Rockport before the summer ends!
Thanks again.

Thanks for sharing Sandy! I grew up in Mass and had many trips to Rockport over the years. It makes me want to visit Rockport on our next trip to see the relatives.

Rockport looks wonderful! We have one on the Texas coast, too - you made me want to visit one or the other of them!

Hey, I just took a blueberry cake out of the oven. I had to bake it a little long, since I didn't notice that you used a pyrex pan, too, so I turned the oven down 25 degrees. But it looks and smells great!!!

Poor Fig. Out of sight, out of mind.

I pinky swear about the streudel. In fact, I have half a mind to take a cross country trip tonight.....

Thanks for the vacation!! I have not had a vacation in WAAYY too long! I truly enjoyed the GREAT pics!! I am insanely jealous that you live so close to such great places!! And just why didn't you bring back a seagull on a platter for your poor kitty? LOL!! Oops...hold on...got to raise my hand and swear to shop at the strudel and fudge shop....only thing that could be better would be if they also sold yarn!! LOL!! Thanks for the "treat"!!

I love Rockport. It's one of my favorite things about living in/near/by the greater Boston area.

I'm in for strudel. I love that pathway you found. What? No yarn in Rockport?

SQUACK!

Nuts! I was on vacation in Mass. last month, and we skipped Rockport...but it looks beautiful! Oh well, it's a good excuse to go back sometime.

Very picturesque, lots of fun, and you didn't have to drive all day to get there. ;-) Perfect day!

Can it be that there is no yarn in Rockport? Or were you just really really virtuous?

You know, I saw you mention Rockport, but thought to myself, "Well, there's more than one," but as soon as I saw that first photo, I knew it was the one in Massachusetts. It's such a nice little town! (I can't help it--I get excited when I see places I've actually been on other people's blogs.)

Looks like you had a beautiful Saturday! Thanks for posting all those gorgeous pictures.

Great photos! Sounds like it was a wonderful day.

Isn't Motif #1 beautiful? I just saw about it on the news last month.

Posted by: Helen on 07.24.2006 AT 10:46 AM

Rockport is gorgeous. It's been so long since I've been up there. Now I wanna go! (You know, we should really plan a get-together one of these weekends.)
