08.08.2006 :: Stuff and more stuff

In the interest of full diclosure, I did have one can of diet coke today. I started drinking it without even knowing what I was doing. I always drink diet coke with my lunch and today was no exception. It took about half a can to realize what I had done.
It's a process. I still consider this a success. I drank far fewer than I would have on any given day. And just so you know, it's not necessarily the caffeine I'm kicking, it's the chemicals and artificial-ness of it. Lately I have been trying to more concious of eating more organic food, more healthy food and making better choices for my body. It seemed that swilling down diet cokes at an alarming rate was counterproductive.
If I am what I eat, I don't want to be artificial.
You know?
What else has been on my mind?
Fig. His yearly vet appointment was yesterday (yes, that means I am extrmemly poor, thanks for asking) and I worried what I would learn. I knew that he had lost some weight. The verdict? A 2 pound loss. That is a lot for a cat, but he is clearly not anorexic yet. He still weighs in at a healthy 12.6 pounds. His kidney levels stayed the same, which is great news and his thyroid was borderline high. All things to keep an eye on for the future. I was instructed to keep an eye on his weight and to call immediately if he stops eating or starts drinking extreme amounts.
Good news, all, but still. A 2 pound weight loss in a cat. Perhaps he is just watching his figure?

Does this Christmas cactus make me look fat??

I had an extra diet coke yesterday - for you. I've been trying to substitute flavoured water for one DC a day, but it is artificially sweentened as well, so I guess it doesn't count.

Give the cat a pat from me.

Hi Sandy,

I'm fairly new, but I wanted to chime in on Fig's weight loss and your vet visit. I'm a member of the send-paycheck-directly-to-vet's-office group as well. My Charlie was a healthy 12 lbs. and then started losing weight slowly, until he was down to 8 lbs and looking a little skeletal. He was also not keeping his food down, and we discovered through some tests that he has a form of IBD. Three medicines, monthly vet visits for blood work and special food later, we have stabilized the weight loss and he has gained a little bit back, but not much. So, if the weight loss continues, and/or Fig doesn't keep his food down, you might want to look into intestinal problems. Not the easiest thing to treat, but not the worst either, and Charlie seems to still have a good life in spite of it.

By the way, I love your skies. :)

You didn't mention sugar levels, so I was just wondering if he was checked for diabetes. Mine lost significant weight and the result was diabetes. He did drink a lot of water though and soaked the box as well. Perfectly controllable with insulin. Hope Fig continues to do well and yeah for you to kick the Diet Coke. One of my missions has been to kick regular Coke and once in a while I still slip back. Don't need the extra calories on my end.

Oh I know Fig will be fine-there's nothing like a cat watching his figure.
Oh that habbit thing is horrible-I do that with food-I don't even know I'm eating something, it's just such habbit to eat that chocolate.

Our Murphy is skin and bones and his legs are week. BUT, he's happy, acts normal (for Murphy) and eats well. May Fig do well, too.

What a beautiful cat and I love the name Fig.

I agree with you about Diet Coke. When I worked as a Secretary for some Americans with BP we never stopped drinking it. It took me over a year to wean myself off it!

Fig looks great to me! Perhaps the 2 lb. is in fur....maybe she is getting ready for her new winter "wardrobe"! Don't feel bad about drinking a partial DC....old habits are hard to break....but you'll make it! Good philosphy "you are what you eat"....hmmmm....guess that means I am cheap and easy!!! Ha!

Remember, it takes 21 days for an action to become a habit. Until then, just be mindful. :)
And Fig looks great! Jessica Bunny lost her weight when we took away her pellets and decreased her veggies. She went from a fatty 7 pounds to an ideal 4.7 pounds in one year! I also think that her chasing around Zydeco is another factor...

Glad Figs vet visit went well!

At least, Fig is a bigger kitty. I'm doing a version of the same thing over here with Precious, but she's all fur and bones.

I'm glad you made it thru the day. It'll take time to break those old habits, but you can do it.

Yay for you for the 1/2 can. That's PROGRESS. (Norma will kick for sure when she sees the dead patch on the lawn in a few days from throwing that soda on it. Ew.)
Fig is such a cutie. Miss Lulu has to lose a 1/2 pound, but I can't imagine 2 pounds. My vet is concerned about the dramatic rise in feline diabetes the last few years, and gave me the same warnings.

Our Phoebe had the same diagnosis as Fig last month. She's lost about a pound over last year (she's still 11 lbs) so it's not horrible but I had to buy a scale and stand on it while holding her to figure out how much she weighs. The vet says that if she continues to lose weight, we have to go back and get her drugs. Sigh... In the meantime, I give her extra canned food to keep her weight up and she's liking that treatment.

yay fig!

and yay you for only having half a diet coke.

Yay for you, Sandy! That is exactly what it's all about. Decrease and then hopefully eliminate. And as Kim was just saying to me tonight, it just "doesn't go" with me that I drink that crap. I'm all homeopathic and all-natural and Ms. Health Food, and then I drink that stuff? It does not compute. I'm so glad I've got the support of my friends.

I slipped off the wagon today, too. I poured one and thought I was going to enjoy it immensely, but I took one sip and disliked it so much that I threw the rest out on the grass. I felt that I really made it over the hump then. I had extra chocolate today, but I did not have a caffeine pill as I did yesterday, and I did not have any tea, either.

So you keep up the good work!

Twinkie is due for her annual checkup and vaccination later this month. Our report will be the opposite. "The rabbit is still overweight. She possibly weighs *more* than last year when I told you the same thing!" ;)

Fig is so sweet. I am caving and getting a cat (or two) at the end of the summer.
