08.16.2006 :: Not my birthday

I have finished one Meleinweit Colortweed sock:

Sock in dappled August sunshine resting on beat up porch in need of a good paint job. Everything in good time. I really love this yarn. The color, the knitting, the feel, Did I say the color?
What a heel:

Heel Cam!
Want to see something really exciting?

I know. A package. Can anything else bring a flutter of a knitters heart than a package? This is not just ANY package. This is my birthday package from Kimberly! All the way from Germany! This is part of the August Birthday Swap, brainchild of Abigail (who is the recipient of a birthday package from me!) I do not plan to open this package until THE day. Bethany is giving me dirty looks as we speak. She cannot believe that I will let a package sit around. I will, though, let it sit around. Because today is NOT my birthday.
When I was in elementary school, any child having a birthday got to wear the birthday crown. In reality, a paper crown. In my built up 6 year old memory, it was diamond studded. It was a goal beyond my reach. I could not wear the crown. Ever. I was a SUMMER BIRTHDAY. I envied those crown wearers.
This year, I have better than a crown, a package waiting.

Three cheers for August birthdays! Mine's the 20th and I never got to wear the crown or bring the birthday snack to school either. Have a happy birthday. And good for you waiting to open the package :)

I hear you, I am a summer baby, too. Sigh.

Beautiful colourway on those socks - they're looking great!

Posted by: Charity on 08.17.2006 AT 12:45 PM

I'm not sure, but I *think* I got the same colorway at Webs. I looked at two that were very similar to each other, and said "Which of these looks most like Sandy's sock?" :-)

Meanwhile, I have been trying to get in touch with you about accommodations for Rhinebeck, but I think I may have ended up in your spam filter! Would you please let me know where you're staying, so I can try to get a room at the same place? Thanks! :-)

Happy early birthday! My birthday is Aug. 24th. No school birthday crown for me either. I can't wait to open packages. That box would have been open the minute I received it.

A package is way better than a crown! Although a tiara would be nice...

Posted by: Diane on 08.17.2006 AT 10:03 AM

I was a July Birthday, so all of those summer birthday kids got paraded together and sung to en masse. Just wasn't the same! And my half birthday is New Years Day. Ah well, I got pool parties for my birthday.

Posted by: Heather G. on 08.17.2006 AT 09:02 AM

I would wait too.

Posted by: claudia on 08.17.2006 AT 08:57 AM

Ohhh...all that anticipation!! That's 99% of the fun!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! I love the sock and DON'T paint the porch....look at Country Living Magazine....some of those folks pay big bucks to get that shabby chic look!! I LOVE the sock, especially those gorgeous fall colors!! Hate to sound stupid...but hey....I Yam what I Yam....but is Meleinweit Colortweed the name of the yarn or the pattern?? Would love to find some self striping yarn like this!!

Happy Early B'day - My b'day is the 26th, and I, like you, was never able to bring b'day cupcakes to school! The horror. (We shall not speak of the zuchini bread b'day cake I had for my 8th b'day).

Posted by: meg on 08.17.2006 AT 07:29 AM

Happy early Birthday! You are so much better than I! I could never wait...even with Christmas presents...awful...just awful...nope, I have no restraint when it comes to things like that! :) Love the socks and the colors.

Hehe-you're good.

Posted by: Kimberly on 08.16.2006 AT 11:55 PM

Pulling up a seat to watch you open your package WITH your crown on- ummm...when will that be?

Posted by: Manise on 08.16.2006 AT 11:47 PM

Oooh, I didn't look at all the August B-day ladies' blogs or I would've KNOWN that we share the birthday month!

I just had mine, and my pal was SUPERB! Some friends of ours used to have trouble about getting together on "the" day for b-days and annivesaries, so we instituted the "Birthday Radius". It can stretch as far before or after THE day as you need it to in order to celebrate with the people you choose.

So wait on that box until YOU want to open it--it's YOUR day! Have a great one!

Very lovely socks...but did you like the color? (wink) I sure did. Ooh, lucky you, what's in the box?

Posted by: Barb on 08.16.2006 AT 10:51 PM

Oh, nice sock! I'm going to have to keep that yarn in mind. I like to wait until my birthday to open packages too.

Posted by: Sydney on 08.16.2006 AT 10:45 PM

Ilove your Meilenweit sock! That color is so much fun. And I know exactly what you mean! I was a holiday break baby and it was all about savoring your birthday when you finally got to it. Happy pre-bday!

Posted by: dani on 08.16.2006 AT 10:07 PM

*anticipation*

The Meilenweit sock is really cool!

Posted by: Chris on 08.16.2006 AT 07:15 PM

Yay for August birthdays! I never got to wear the birthday crown either. Can't wait to see what's in your box! :)

Love the sock. Heh, in my feeble brain (2-1/2 hrs sitting in an overcrowded pediatric office today waiting for my daughter's school physical while her Dr was 1hr and 40 min behind schedule!!! about did me in), I read Colort Weed instead of Color Tweed and spent a few seconds trying to resurrect enough German to figure out what "colort" could possibly mean. I'll bet if you dropped enough hints, someone who lives close by would go get a Burger King crown and spray paint it gold and stick on some huge "jewels" from Michaels. I would if I lived close by. (HINT HINT NE knitters!!) PS- My daughter has a summer b-day so we always celebrated her 1/2 b-day in mid-Jan so she could wear the b-day crown (it was actually her kindergarten teacher's idea) and in the summer she got the cool outdoor slip-n-slide and pool party with popsicles and an ice cream cake.

You are SO STRONG. And you gave me heart failure because I thought I had missed your birthday. Phew.

Posted by: Norma on 08.16.2006 AT 05:54 PM

Love your socks. I have a summer birthday too and I feel your pain. I always wanted a Fall birthday so that I could bring cupcakes to school.

Posted by: Susan on 08.16.2006 AT 05:40 PM

Such restraint! I don't think I'd be able to wait! Great socks.

Posted by: Kelly on 08.16.2006 AT 05:30 PM

Oh. Were we supposed to wait to open our packages? Because I totally didn't.

Me too on the crown-lust. One year -- just ONE YEAR -- I had a teacher who held celebrations in June for the July and August kids, and it was everything I'd dreamed it would be and more. I still have the crown.

Posted by: Ruth on 08.16.2006 AT 05:19 PM

Well it's a good thing that today isn't your birthday, b/c you definitely need some time to make yourself a crown! (At my daughter's school they let the kids w/ summer bdays pick a day during the year to celebrate.)

Posted by: Katy on 08.16.2006 AT 05:07 PM

I used to be a 4-year-old preschool teacher (now I'm a teacher of infants) and I always let the summer birthday children pick a time in the fall to celebrate their special day. I would have TOTALLY let you wear a birthday crown.

Posted by: DebbieB on 08.16.2006 AT 05:00 PM

I think a package birthday deserves a crown.

Posted by: Rachel H on 08.16.2006 AT 04:44 PM

ooh a package. when is the day? i'm with you by the way. i don't open packages ahead of time either. drives people in my life crazy that i can wait that long.

i wouldn't have gotten the crown either -- my birthday usually came after the beginning of christmas break. and then i got birthday/christmas presents. blech

Posted by: maryse on 08.16.2006 AT 04:40 PM

How exciting! Now you've got us all waiting with you.
