08.22.2006 :: tomato land

Is there anything better than a freshly grown tomato? I think not. I did not plant any this year. Even better, my neighbor did. And he shares! He told me that any tomatoes that grow on my side of the fence are ours. OURS! Then he proceeded to direct many plants THROUGH the fence. Although none are red yet, soon I will be up to my tastebuds in fresh tomatoes!

Another package showed up in my mailbox, that Margene is an awesome one! I'm feeling a bit unworthy with all this goodness waiting for me!
I'm not worthy!
P.S. Today is not my birthday either. I'll give you a hint. It's soon. And it's the same day that we bring Bethany to college. Move in day and my 45th birthday on the same day. Shouldn't there be a law against that?

I'll talk to the gods about that mix-up-in-the-days thing! I hope I can fix it in time. :)

Those tomatoes will be yummy!!! We have had a few ripe ones and have plenty more just like those. It is nice to have neighbours like that.

Happy Pre-Birthday! (you can stretch out the celebration this way)

Those tomatoes are the most perfect tomatoes I think I've ever seen!

What a clever and wonderful neighbor! We have scads of tomatoes - oh how I wish I liked them more. About all I can stand is a bite or two from my husband's tomato sandwich once in a while.

Happy almost birthday! I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to see what's in that box.

An ice cold pepsi on a hot summer day.

:p

What a lovely neighbor.

You people and your late move in days. Move in day at my school was the 13th. "Your" tomoatoes look lovely :)

Posted by: Vicki on 08.23.2006 AT 11:24 AM

I don't really like tomatos, but I must say that was very generous of your neighbour to share.

Posted by: Samantha on 08.23.2006 AT 11:18 AM

Hey, Katrina landed on my 60th birthday - is that an omen, or what?!
Could it be that we share a birthday?

Posted by: Barbara-Kay on 08.23.2006 AT 10:30 AM

I know when your birthday is because it's the same day we move son Keith to UNH. Wave some needles and I'll shout a happy birthday if I see you.
Jealous over those tomatoes. Nothing better than a beautiful red on, warm from the sun. Mmmmmm!

I'm going to guess Aug 26th for one very simple reason - it's my birthday, too!

I can't believe ya'll still don't have ripe tomatoes....ours are about finished!! NOTHING like a fresh tomato just off the vine!! What a treat for you and what a great neighbor!! While I don't have a child to send to college I have bravely gone before you and will be 48 this year....45 is NOTHIN HONEY!! You'll breeze right through...and hey....you've already got two surprises waiting and the big day isn't even here yet!! How wonderful for you to have raised a child and is able to send her to college....let's celebrate!!!

There is nothing like a fresh tomatoe! Down here in the south the tomatoes just don't taste like "northern" tomatoes. I sure do miss them. It's also too hot and too dry to plant them, I've tried.
Good luck with the college move in day. Ours went without a hitch, but the kleenex box was well used! That was one of the quietest trips home that hubby and I ever had - we just couldn't talk! I'll be thinking of you, whenever it is, and I hope you have a wonderful 45th birthday!!!!

Oh, there should be! I think you should get to celebrate a day early. With the opening of the mysterious parcels. ;-)

Posted by: Beth S. on 08.23.2006 AT 08:13 AM

Tomotoes!!! Are you going to sit on the ground beside the plant while they rippen and pop each one in your mouth as you pull it off the plant? I would;-)
It's a gift to have a daughter who is going to college and living a good life. You've been a good mother. It's a difficult time but she isn't going away. She's evolving and building a life with a foundation you helped her form. Be strong, celebrate the day for you both and make it fun!

Fried green tomatoes. Green tomato relish, green tomato pickles, green tomato mincemeat. Tasty.
Of course, if they are fully ripe, there are so many things. Tasty.

Is it Thursday?

Hopefully, putting those two packages together will make them multiply. :D

Thought I would stop by and let you know I enjoy your blog.

I agree that nothing is better than a home grown tomato. YUM-YUM. I planted tomatoes in containers this year, some cherry tomatoes and some big beefy ones--so I have been having fresh tomatoes for over a month now. I really will miss them this winter. Maybe you'll luck out and your tomatoes will be ready to eat on your birthday.
I love packages, part of the fun of them is not knowing what is in them and thinking about it for awhile. Are you shaking them?

I know when it is....I know when it is!

Now that's one amazing neighbor. And the birthday is when ???

Posted by: Carole on 08.22.2006 AT 09:57 PM

What a wonderful neighbor! And you have to watch that Margene. She's never sleeping, that one.

Posted by: Laurie on 08.22.2006 AT 09:01 PM

Is this the same neighbor who has all of the amazing flowers in his yard? I seem to remember a photo from, gosh, a year or two ago of his yard. It looked enchanted! Sounds like you've got a good neighbor there. Whenever your birthday is... have a great day. :)

Posted by: Liz on 08.22.2006 AT 08:59 PM

It's like Christmas in August! And topped with cherry tomatoes. What a wonderful neighbor. Those are going to taste SO GOOD. They look very, very healthy. Well done, Sandy's neighbor!

Posted by: Norma on 08.22.2006 AT 07:57 PM

A crown from Margene perhaps? Gads! More waiting? ;-)
