09.04.2006 :: Thumb wrestling

DSC07252.JPG

As I finished up the second Liidia's mitten from Folk Knitting in Estonia (the pattern is a glove pattern, converted to mitten) I felt excitement, relief that these would be done in time for cold weather and more relief because these have stewed a bit. My relief and gladness were shortlived as I lay them side by side to get a glimpse. Hmm. Can you see it? See the red line on the right mitten? That is the thumb position. Dang it if I did not make TWO RIGHT MITTENS. And how bad is it that I actually tried one on my left hand, twisting it into postion trying to convince myself that it was OKAY? It would be FINE. I would hardly mind AT ALL.
It did not work. I WILL indeed mind. I must now dig out the well buried woven in end and rip out the top shaping. Must Shape Differently.

I'm a little rosebud!
Looks like a fine day to go to a craft fair! Hey, I've got to keep myself busy as I'm newly released from daily Mom duty!

DANGIT! I've made two left mittens before---crap!! I hate it when that happens!!

They're so beautiful---and will be even moreso when there's one for *each* hand. :)

I love those mittens. What a shame that you may have to unpick one of them.

Your poor thing. Two right mittens. Can't you graft the stitches held in place by the red yarn and then do an "afterthought" thumb a la Elizabeth Zimmerman's afterthought pockets, afterthought heels, etc?? That would save you from doing all that ripping.

How how pretty, Sandy!

I love the mittens....see I would do two the same lol. They still make me want to knit a pair of mittens!!!!

Love the rosebud photo.

Yep, I had a Harlot flashback too. :-) So sorry about that mistake! Try to think of it as prolonging the pleasure of knitting this particular pair of mittens. ;-)

The mittens are lovely. What you need is a friend with 2 right hands. Ok, so not helpful at all. I feel your mitten pain.

Sorry about the mitten....they are so pretty!!!!

i've done the same thing. feel your pain.

I know this sounds lame but...when I knit mittens, I make two copies of the pattern. I edit the thumb directions so that I have written directions for the left and right. I use whichever pattern is appropriate for the right or left mitten...and I make sure I put the non-working mitten pattern away so that I don't confuse myself. Sometimes I just want to knit without having to think, ya know??? ;-) Do you have enough yarn left that you could make two left mittens and then gift/donate a pair?

I hate when that happens!! So now what?

Posted by: margene on 09.04.2006 AT 07:05 PM

Sorry to about your mitten. I hate it when knitting goes wrong!

Posted by: Kelly on 09.04.2006 AT 06:12 PM

Dang!! I have done that before too. Great looking mittens though.

Posted by: Maureen on 09.04.2006 AT 03:40 PM

Wow, those are sure some bitchin' mittens. I've done similar, so I can't poke too much fun at you for it... (Two front lefts to a sweater. It wasn't pretty.)

Posted by: Dave Daniels on 09.04.2006 AT 03:16 PM

Sorry about the two right mittens. I hate it when things like that happen.

Posted by: Sydney on 09.04.2006 AT 01:53 PM

Oh no! Not the dread TRMS (Two Right Mittens Syndrome)! The last time I did this I just forged ahead and made two left mittens for two complete pairs. :)

Posted by: Jessica on 09.04.2006 AT 01:44 PM

What'd ya get at the craft fair? What'd ya get?!

Posted by: Norma on 09.04.2006 AT 01:39 PM

Or you could make two lefts.

/runs like hell

Posted by: Cookie on 09.04.2006 AT 01:07 PM

I seem to remember something like that happening to a certain Harlot a while back ..... at least you're in fine company.

Posted by: Ruth on 09.04.2006 AT 01:03 PM

Lovely mitten Pattern!!!! I agree with Jean do the EZ thing...no pun intended!!

Posted by: Cindy D on 09.04.2006 AT 11:32 AM

Well that sucks. But not the release from daily mom duty. That doesn't suck at all. Does it?

Posted by: Carole on 09.04.2006 AT 10:52 AM

Or, you could knit two left mittens, and have two pairs :-)

Posted by: Leanne on 09.04.2006 AT 10:48 AM

Yeah! We have mittens!!

So sorry about your thumb, I think we've all been there at one time. They do look great though!

I was looking through Folk Mittens last night. It is the knittin' mitten time of year again!

Posted by: Nicola on 09.04.2006 AT 10:31 AM

have fun at the craft fair!

Posted by: maryse on 09.04.2006 AT 10:03 AM

Wait, wait, wait! You can fix it without frogging all that back. Do EZ's afterthought trick for the real thumb, undo the red "holder" for the wrong thumb and reweave in the right colors. I'm sure it would work. It'd take a little fiddling, but it'd have to be faster than reknitting all that and you'd have the satisfaction that you won! They're beautiful anyway, Sandy.

Posted by: Jean on 09.04.2006 AT 09:45 AM

Brilliant solution: I was think about how to fake a left thumb opening and graft in the hole from the holding yarn. That would take me just as long as it would you to just re-knit the top. So smart with the mittens, Sandy.

Cripes. Don't you hate when that happens?! It happens to the best of 'em (I tell myself), so we're in good company. ; )

It's moving day for D#2 today! She's so excited -- which is both good and disconcerting.

Posted by: Vicki on 09.04.2006 AT 09:35 AM

Oh NO! I dread doing that. Almost as much as I dread locking myself out of the house. (Routine leaving house: hold keys in my hand. Look at keys. Lock front door from outside. Look at keys. Put in bag. Look at keys. Ok!)

Do you have enough yarn for two pairs, or would that just be too awful?
