09.06.2006 :: You have an opinion, I know you do! Don't deny it!

Sometimes you just have to lay your head down on your catnip mouse/carrot and kick back!

Many of you mentioned Elisabeth Zimmerman's afterthought thumb in response to my last post. Can you imagine that I call myself a knitter and I do not own, nor have I even looked at an E. Zimmerman book? It's true. So, I ask you, in which book is this afterthought thumb? And which book, in your humble knitterly opinion should I get? No fair saying ALL of them!
I have a couple of Barnes and Noble Gift certificates in my pocket.

No clue on the book, but that Fig is such a sugar!! Maybe if you lay your head down on that little fish sock bag, it'll all be better....

BTW, I bought that fish sock bag pattern, and can't wait to stitch it up! It's SO cute!

I love Knitting Without Tears. Ordered mine from abebooks.com cause my BandN didn't have it.

Sorry, I can't help you but good luck with the book and thumb search. Cute picture-big snuggles!

Believe you me, you're going to want all of them.

P.S.
Sandy, It is mitten knitting season. I am ready to knit lots of mittens. Are you going to run the warm hands knit along gain? We had soooo much fun with it last year!

I don't think I could only choose one EZ book. If I could only have two I would have to have The Knitters Almanac and Knitting Without Tears! They go togeather like homemade bread and really good jam!

Posted by: paula on 09.08.2006 AT 08:01 PM

the "Thumb Trick" is in the appendix of Knitter's Almanac BUT if I could only pick one EZ book to own it would be Knitting Without Tears (I have one that I bought in 1971 and boy can you tell it has been well used!)

I'd google search it. Maybe knitty has a good tutorial. Nona sometimes has great tutorials.

I didnt 'like KNitting Without Tears. I felt like I was being yelled at.

I've got a 20-something yo Knitting Without Tears that saved me several times over and from which I knit a sweater that is currently being worn by my 4th daughter (it was knit for D#1). The cover on the new books is different but I'd still recommend it for the basic good sense (and it is entertaining reading too). The only other EZ book I've seen in stores is Knitter's Almanac which I bought recently, but I'd recommend KWT if you are only getting one.

I don't have any of her books either. I've been thinking about getting Knitting Without Tears though.
If you can't find it at Barnes and Noble, you could try Abebooks.com. Pretty good book prices and shipping prices there.

Cute kitty picture.

I really like the Almanac. It has helped me on some quick gifts!

I have Knitters Almanac and it is in there... not actually as a topic but part of the mitered mitten pattern. I've discovered that most of her books are hard to find, especially in the big box book stores... you may want to order directly from Schoolhouse Press.

Anyway, SUCH a sweet kitty picture and I'm not even a cat person! :)

Truth be told...eekk....I don't own an EZ book either!

What a sweet kitty picture!

I have my first EZ book waiting for me at our apt in Washington. Can't wait to get it! Thanks for reminding me.

I'm so glad you asked this. I've been wondering that very thing myself!

I've knit for almost 30 years and don't have a Zimmerman book either.....

I just got 'Knitting Around' and like it. Would solve your thumb issue. Good one to get. Just saying imho :-)

Posted by: Manise on 09.06.2006 AT 10:44 PM

It's in "Knitting Around" page 153. "Knitting Around" is a good book and so is "Knitting Without Tears" and "Knitter's Almanac".

That's such a sweet cat picture!

No EZ books here, either. I'd just go rip the thing back. Next year.

Posted by: Laurie on 09.06.2006 AT 10:05 PM

Oh, ick. I love EZ but not the afterthought heels/thumbs. Maybe because I've got fat hands. I need a gusset.

Posted by: Beth on 09.06.2006 AT 10:01 PM

Eek! I haven't got any of her books, either. But ever since I saw the glorious Seamless Hybrid sweater over at Brooklyn Tweed, I am starting to rethink the error of my ways! (I think he said that sweater was in Knitting Without Tears.)

Posted by: Beth S. on 09.06.2006 AT 09:58 PM

I don't have any of the Goddess Z's book, either. The after thought thumb is the same at the after thought heels on socks. As you knit, put in some waste yarn. When you are done knitting, go back, remove the yarn and finish the thumb.
Let us know which books you get.

Aw, that picture is adorable!

And, I checked my library--the Afterthought Thumb is in the index of "Knitting Around," which happens to be the first EZ book I ever bought, and therefore, obviously, one I'd recommend as "first." (It has the Pi-are-Square shawl that I love, too.)

Other than that, I'd recommend "Knitting Without Tears" as a good EZ book to start with.

Happy shopping!

I agree with the kitty.

And I can top you. I have no idea who that person is. :p

I don't know which book - but such a cute cat picture!
