09.12.2006 :: Scenes from a garden!
Not my garden! Even better! My neighbor's! None of the work, all of the beauty.
Maybe you remember the story. My neighbor is an elderly man that plants every inch of his yard with mostly dahlias. Dahlias need to be lifted every fall and stored away because they are not hardy for our winter. This is a lot of work. This man works hard.
The above picture is one of his gardens. The fence on the left of the picture runs the length of my driveway, my house is to the left of his garage. There is alot of flowers there, believe me!
Here are some of my favorites!
an orange row
Believe me when I say that I could have stayed out there all day long taking photos.

Thank you for sharing these pics. With fall arriving here in Indiana, I am about to put my flower garden to bed. This was refreshing to view, like a walk through his garden. This guy is sensational!

Wow.
Your neighbor's yard (hee hee - wrote "yarn" first) is absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing this gorgeous site with us. And let him know that he's a web star now!

I'm so glad you take pictures of his lovely garden every year. The dalia's are breathtaking!!

So pretty! We had a man like that in our neighborhood growing up. His specialty was marigolds and zinnias.

Those dahlias are stunning. I'd love living next door to them, too. What a lot of work your neighbor goes through every year. Obviously a labor of love... Thank you for sharing.

Dahlia's are one of my favorites and here in the sunny south we don't have to dig them up every year like we did when we lived in RI. Hmm, maybe I should do the whole yard in them, then no more mowing?
Gorgeous pictures. Thanks for sharing.

Goodness gracious! I can't imagine planting all those bulbs (?) and pulling them back up again every year. Too much hard work for me! But you are so lucky to live near somebody who takes the time to do it. It's an absolutely glorious garden!

I was a dahlia in our Grade 3 play, and loved them ever since, but couldn't convince mom to grow them because she said they always get buggy. But THOSE dahlias are just perfect!

I recently bought a very nice, make you drool camera. I've never been one to take walks because I get bored easily. A week ago I was looking longingly at my camera thinking that there must be millions of wonderful photos just waiting to be taken with my camera and I wasn't taking any of them, and then it struck me. Sandy takes her camera when she walks! I could take a walk! Added benefit: exercise without the boredom. I'm hooked, thanks for being my inspiration

Beautiful - Dahlias are one of my favourite flowers. Because of climate is so mild we can often get away with leaving them in the ground as well.

Absolutely a breathtakingly beautiful view! Dahlias of every shape, size and hue.....I'd be at the fence all day gazing. Lucky you.

We used to have a cat in a similar arrangement to your neighbour's garden. He would stay at our house all day and play, and go home at night to eat or when he was feeling ill so they could pay for his vet bills. Good deal.

I like your philosophy: None of the work, all of the beauty. Priceless!
And that must be the most wonderful view, to look out your window and see all of that. Right down to the white fence.

Lucky.

What wonderful pictures! Dahlias are one of my favorite flowers, and one of the few things I miss about dwelling in the 'burbs is the space to grow some....
Posted by: Amanda on 09.12.2006 AT 08:43 PM
Thank you so much. I love dahlias, but have never had good luck with them. I am very jealous of your view.

Would he share some of his bulbs/tubers? Could I buy some? Could I send him some brownies? Seriously. I'd like to start some dahlias and have had no luck with store-bought ones. I'd like to try some tried-and-trues.
