« A fair evening | Main | My hands are so fetching »

10.10.2006 :: I've been to a strange world, my friend..

And that world is called RUGBY. It is a world that I neither understand nor "get". It seems to me that Rugby may just be a way for boys to bully each other on the field. (I did not watch women's rugby, so I can't judge about the girl bullies)
I spent a mighty cold Friday evening planted upon a metal bleacher at UMass Lowell to see Derek (maybe) play rugby.

Where is Derek?

He is standing on the sidelines, grey hooded sweatshirt, black shorts, red knee socks.
And I don't care who you are?

THIS is uncomfortable!

I'm sure I would have liked the game better if I understood one thing that went on. I have some studying to do. But I'm not sure I can like a game that is rife with injuries including a broken neck to one of the players that night.
Perhaps it might be best if this is only a father spectator sport?

More on this tomorrow:

Oh gosh, I hear you on that rugby-it's not for me. I had a boyfriend in highschool who was on the football team and I had no clue what was going on. I still have no clue and don't really want to know. ;) Why don't they play something like tennis or go sailing. ;)I guess boys will be boys.

Oh, Sandy, I was in Lowell on Friday night, too, just across the river from where you were, at the hockey game. If you're ever looking for some knitterly company in the stands, let me know.

i love rugby. played for three years in college - we were required to have an ambulance at all games, which was a good thing. i never really explained the extent of my injuries to my parents, which i think is best, and i had good insurance, which was helpful. i eventually quit because of injuries (and played ultimate instead), but i still miss it all the time and i think american football is quite poncy - although i will admit, after three years of rugby, i still don't really understand american football!

and the warmers, they are lovely.

my son played rugby for one semester at college in vermont. i only went to one match and was unable to watch. it's a lot rougher than football and there is no padding. not a big fan!@!

I went to my first rugby match last weekend to watch my boyfriend's brother play...had no idea what was going on, either. Even after two very nice Maori men tried to explain it to me.

They wrote me off after I made them explain that cheerleader lift thing to me again. :)

Oh -- quick ? -- have you gotten to the thumb part -- I think I may be confused!

I'm with you on the rugby -- major oy! Whatever is a mom to do!!

I know what that is -- I started a pair last weekend.

I adore rugby. I used to play. And the girl bullies are just sneakier, I think. I've been bitten in the scrum and had my pigtails pulled. I've had bruises in the shape of cleat marks and still think it's the best game ever.

Ah, rugby...American football wihtout all those wussy pads. It can be entertaining, but yeah, I don't know if I could watch it if someone I loved was out on the field.

Girl rugby is just as brutal. There was seldom a match in college that didn't end with someone being loaded onto an ambulance. The appeal of it was utterly lost on me.

OUCH! A broken neck?

I'll just pass by the Rugby stuff to say that cuff is STUNNING! I may have to use that, can't wait to see what it is.

if you think that is rough, you should see australian rules football. it's an out and out brawl!

my ex played rugby while he was in the army, and tore his acl. he ended up having to leave the army because of it.

I've never understood Rugby either - seems like a combination of Soccer and Football (with no pads!)

The little tease is beautiful!!!!

ooh! what are the cables for? Do tell!

Posted by: Heather on 10.11.2006 AT 10:10 AM

Yeah, let Andy do it. Hee. Hmmm, what's that golden thing?

Posted by: Norma on 10.11.2006 AT 09:52 AM

Yup Rugby can be a dangerous game (both sorts) I seem to remember a good few years ago that a rugby team took on an American football team at their own game, without padding and beat them quite conclusively. Tough lot rugby players :-)

I'm not sure about the rugby. It certainly sounds like a fathers only sport.

I'm very intrigued by the cabled item. It looks great.

Fetching?

Posted by: Carole on 10.11.2006 AT 09:19 AM

Most certainly NOT a mom-spectator sport (wait til he scores his first try - ask him what a Zulu is). Nor a girlfriend-specator sport either. I watched one of my husband's (then boyfriend) games in college and never went back. Too scary.

Father spectator sport fo SHO!

Posted by: scoutj on 10.11.2006 AT 12:18 AM

Okay, I will admit it... I LUVLUVLUV rugby! I became hooked (pardon the pun) on the game when I was in college, and actively played while in my mid-20s. Ahhhh... I miss being in the scrum and the fabulous comraderie after each match. Bet you would never guess a "little" girl like me as a right "flanka" now would you? ;)

At first I thought that cabley loveliness was a sweater sleeve...but no, I bet it's mittens!

I love rugby! It's so nice to see real men playing a sport for a change. No, I don't get it, but I don't know to.

Is that what I think it is? :D Love!

Sandy, I'm Australian, where we play two forms of Rugby, (League and union), I've been brought up on it, and I *still* don't underdstand it.

Posted by: Donna on 10.10.2006 AT 07:43 PM

Rugby is a proper sport, played by real men, without the aid of half a ton of padding, lots of breaks and silly girls in flimsy clothing !
Broken necks are not common. Just as well.
American football is a very odd and insipid immitation ! ;-]
I used to go out with a bloke who played for the London Irish. I came to my senses. :0)

A broken neck?!!!! I couldn't even watch. football is bad enough. I can't wait too long to know what is that delicious cabley golden piece of knitting!
