11.11.2006 :: Kitchen Duty

DSC07638.JPG
Christmas has come early to my home. And I couldn't be more thrilled! I have been dreaming over a kitchen aid mixer ever since I can remember. Buying one just seemed so extravagent. I guess I've now reached the age where that does not bother me anymore. That and a good sale! I told Andy that he should put it under the tree. He said no, that I should use it. It did not take me long to have it out of the box and on my counter top. In case he changed his mind, you know!
But when I got it to the counter, look what I found.
DSC07644.JPG
It would not fit under the cabinet. Rats. Double Rats. (oh boy, does my kitchen ever need a paint job! Look at that cracked paint! OY) We have a big kitchen but it just happens to not come with a lot of counter space. What to do?
For now, it will reside next to the other new toy in our home.
Miss Kitchen Aid, meet Mr. Cappucino machine!
DSC07641.JPG
One of Andy's friends was moving across the country and generously gave this cappucino machine to us, well, to Andy because I don't drink coffee. Heh. My machine is bigger than your machine!
Unfortunately, these babies are resting on our kitchen table. This may be handy as a short term solution but not functional for long term storage. Luckily, we hardly eat at the table anymore. Do you? Eat at your table? We did when the kids were here, but not anymore. We are nomad diners. Pick up your plate and eat wherever. Perpetual buffet style, I guess. This won't do for the upcoming holiday meals. Can you imagine a turkey and all it's trimmings sitting around the kitchen aid and the cappucino? No.
So, I'm thinking that perhaps I can find a rolling cart of sort to store it on and wheel it over to the outlet when used. There has to be a functional way to store it because I know of someone who has one and it is not handy. If it's not handy, it won't get used. And I intend to use mine!
The christening mix?

Pumpkin Bread! YUM! Delicious and so appropriate for the season!
Kitchen Aid seemed to like it too!
And today being Saturday and all (is anyone still reading? Gads, I have gone on, haven't I?)

The sky as seen through my Rose of Sharon, one straggler leaf holding on for dear life! Hang on, little leaf!

You are going to *love* your kitchen aid. I had to admit to wondering what the hullabaloo was... until we inherited my MIL's old machine. It's fabulous!

And yes, we eat (sometimes) at our kitchen table. And on occasion we even eat in the dining room, though that usually only happens when we have company. We will probably eat there on Thanksgiving, though. It's the only table in the house big enough for a whole turkey and all the fixin's! LOL The rest of the time DH eats in his office (lunch) or we eat while sitting on the couch in front of the TV. Tres chic. Not. LOL

Do your cabinets have a little lip underneath them? If you tilt the kitchen aide sideways, might you be able to slip it under the lip and then stand it straight? I ask because this is what we had to do in our last apartment. It was a little annoying but much less annoying then having to schlep it out of a cabinet every time we wanted to use it. Our Kitchen Aide is now at least 15 years old and has seen lots of use.

Oh yummy! I love pumpkin bread. I can go into Williams-Sonoma this time of year and leave with nothing but an armload of bread mixes. :-)

And I covet the cappucino machine, too. Mmmmmm.

Merry Christmas early!!!

What a great kitchen toy...I want one!!

Yummy looking pumpkin bread.

We wander with were we eat too.....half the time some are hungry and some are not.....sometimes it bugs me cause I worry they are missing that sit down as a family at dinner but I figure we make up for it elsewhere.

Congrats on your mixer. We received one for a wedding gift (9 years ago) and I use it regularly. It's just great and I bake a lot in the cooler weather. We don't have lots of counter space either, so it's a bit ridiculous looking at the Kitchen Aid next to the Rice Cooker, which is next to the toaster oven and lots of other crud.

As far as eating at the table, we do that but we have to keep moving all the piles of stuff on our table around to make room for food and plates! Clutter abounds.

Oh congratulations on your Kitchen Aid. I got mine for my first wedding anniversary many years ago and I still love it. I wish you many years of happy baking.

Posted by: hillary on 11.13.2006 AT 09:49 AM

A Kitchen Aid! I've been wanting one ever since I've lived on my own. Someday . . .

We don't eat at the table either, I assume it's because we have no kids. Chris and I just fill our plates at the counter and carry them to wherever we want to be. I eat at the computer sometimes, or on the couch. Sometimes I just lean up against the counter. I know, very uncivilised!

Posted by: Cheryl on 11.13.2006 AT 09:30 AM

Of course you need it now - for all the holiday baking!

Posted by: Theresa on 11.13.2006 AT 01:26 AM

Beautiful! Have fun with your new power mixer. I agree with Andy -- fun to use now and have for the holidays!

Posted by: Kathy on 11.12.2006 AT 11:14 PM

Like everyone else, I just love my Kitchen Aid. It is just so nice to have a machine that does what you need it to. I'd forgotton about those lifts; I'll have to check that out to see if I have a good spot for one!

Posted by: Diane on 11.12.2006 AT 09:38 PM

We're twins! I got the exact same coloured KA mixer from Roger last Christmas - and boy is it handy.

If you have a big kitchen, why not build an island for your mixer?

Posted by: Tiffany on 11.12.2006 AT 03:16 PM

Instead of a rolling cart, get a butcher block countertop height table. That will actually add functional space to your kitchen. I have the Groland Island from IKEA. My blender, kitchenaid and a huge cutting board live on it and all my extra mixing bowls and favorite casseroles live under it.

Posted by: Rosemary on 11.12.2006 AT 03:09 PM

We have become dinner nomads at my house, too, now that the kids are off to college. Isn't it fun not to have to set a good example any more! After 20 years of family dinners in the kitchen, my husband and I eat in the living room in front of the TV. And the housekeeping standards have become rather relaxed, to say the least. Such decadence.

Posted by: Cindy on 11.12.2006 AT 03:05 PM

Looks like a lot of us were still reading. Congrats on the Kitchen Aid! That pumkin bread..yum! I don't have a KA but could probably have bought one with the money I spent on cheapo mixers and bread machines, assorted blenders and useless kitchen gadgets.
ENJOY!!

Posted by: emmy on 11.12.2006 AT 12:43 PM

My SO purchased a Kitchenaid for me when I started my (now defunct) cake baking/decorating business (after I killed two cheap-o mixers in the course of a week). I live in an old house and mine doesn't fit under my cabinets, either (damn those short people 200 years ago!) so I went to Target and bought a rolling cart which now lives in the corner of my kitchen - actually, I bought two. Make sure you buy a good one and check the wheels, even on the 2nd one RR had to replace the wheels after one fell off. Yes, fell. off. ;o)

Anyway, your mixer is beautiful - and your pumpkin bread looks yummy! ;o)

Posted by: JessaLu on 11.12.2006 AT 12:23 PM

We love our KitchenAid - one of the very best investments we ever made in terms of our kitchen.

We are pretty much table eaters. It helps keep a degree of "normalcy" at our house. Whatever normal is!

Posted by: Cathy on 11.12.2006 AT 11:38 AM

Congrats on your new toy!

Rev-A-Shelf makes this neat lifter for kitchen aids. The whole thing sits in a cabinet and w/ an easy pull on the shelf, the whole thing rises and comes up to counter top height. Its the NEATEST thing. Of course you need to have a free cabinet. Which I don't. I just envy my friend w/ hers. And curse every time I get my heavy mixer out and carry it across my kitchen. =}

Amazon carries it http://tinyurl.com/typru

Posted by: Nannette on 11.12.2006 AT 11:37 AM

WOOHOO! I LOVE my KitchenAid, and you will love yours, too!!

Maybe if you cut off the bottom of one of the cabinets...hey, it's worth giving up a little cabinet space, eh?

What does Andy think of the cappucino he makes from the machine? I had a little espresso machine for awhile, but everything I made tasted like crap. NOTHING like the wonderful stuff at the local coffeehouse, you know?

MMmmmmmmm...pumpkin bread. I'm envious! Maybe there's a pumpkin bread-flavored protein bar out there somewhere.

xoxoxo

Congrats on the new mixer. My husband bought me one last year for Valentines day and I love it and have gotten a lot of use out of it. Enjoy!

Posted by: Kelly on 11.12.2006 AT 10:22 AM

Congratulations on your new toy!

I'm jealous of your Rose of Sharon. When we moved to our last house, there was a giant, double-blooming one in our yard. (Pretty impressive because it's listed a zone 5 and we're in zone 4.) It died a slow death over the years and despite my efforts to take cuttings, the late blooming period worked against me: Every small shoot that I managed to root looked like a stick until the end of June and every one got weed-whacked. :-(

Posted by: jessie on 11.12.2006 AT 07:38 AM

oh a kitchen aid!! Lucky girl!
I hope everything is good with you.

Posted by: Kimberly on 11.12.2006 AT 12:51 AM

Love my KitchenAid, too! My brother had to build a little corner doo-dad onto their counter to fit the KitchenAid, so it wasn't under the cabinets. It worked really well.

Posted by: Chris on 11.11.2006 AT 11:34 PM

Congratulations on a Major Machine! It is a good time to have it, before the holidays.

Posted by: Laurie on 11.11.2006 AT 08:55 PM

Oh so lucky! I dream of a kitchen aid mixer. Wonder what kind of "little appliances" would be running around if Mr. Cappocino and Miss Kitchen Aid hit it off?

Posted by: Tracey on 11.11.2006 AT 08:04 PM

Hi Sandy

You likely won't recall - but I emailed a few weeks ago asking you about the yarn for your irish hiking scarf. Irec'd my Morehouse merino today ... yay! I'd like to know what size needles you used and how many rows per colour. Thanks a bunch. Can you tell that I loooooved your choice ... I'm such a copy-cat :)

Posted by: Dawne on 11.11.2006 AT 07:51 PM

I think I would die without my Kitchen Aid mixer. Think of all the biscotti you can make now!

Posted by: susan on 11.11.2006 AT 07:50 PM

No Saturday Sky for me today:-( It was dreary anyway. Don't put the new toys away! Out of sight, out of mind. Use them and enjoy!

Posted by: margene on 11.11.2006 AT 07:29 PM

I love my Kitchenaid mixer! It wouldn't fit on the counter in our old apartment, either, so I kept it on a shelf right at the end of our counter and just moved it over whenever I needed to mix something. Not the most convenient option, but it worked.

Posted by: Beth on 11.11.2006 AT 06:54 PM

when I first started dating my husband, an ex-chef, he insisted on getting me one the first holidays we were dating! I so love it and it cranks out breads, cookies and anything else you can throw at it! I cleared out a space in an underneath cabinet for it as it wouldn't fit on my counter either!

Posted by: stacey on 11.11.2006 AT 06:39 PM

Wow! Nice gift! I've been wanting for years too. Have fun with your new toy!

Posted by: Carol on 11.11.2006 AT 05:24 PM

Good for you! I got mine as a birthday present years and years ago and can't imagine life without it. It DOES fit under our cabinets, but I'm forever pulling it out, pushing it back in, so really, you're better off!

Posted by: --Deb on 11.11.2006 AT 04:32 PM

Nothing beats having good tools for the job at hand. Put it on a rolling cart. Beauty, convenience etc....

Posted by: Carol on 11.11.2006 AT 02:46 PM

The rolling cart is definitely the way to go! I found that when I stored my Kitchen Aid in the lower cabinets, I never used it. That baby's HEAVY! I bought a rolling cart at Target and found that the bread machine fits on the second shelf. Two problems solved! I'm about to renovate my kitchen and utility room and I'm designing the utility room around my little cart!

You are going to love the KA for holiday cooking!

Posted by: LizW on 11.11.2006 AT 01:07 PM

Just think of the babies those two machines could have...

Mine doesn't fit on the counter, either. Old house. It lives on a rolling cart thingy and seems happy enough.

Did you really think Andy was going to put it under the tree? He wanted baked goodies sooner than that.

Posted by: Cookie on 11.11.2006 AT 01:05 PM

I love my Kitchen Aid! Though I had to relearn how to make cakes, having never had something so powerful. I had to try it out on bread dough, as that stalled my previous mixer Have fun!

Posted by: Paula on 11.11.2006 AT 11:44 AM

I'm still hanging on to my Sunbeam Mixmaster, but those Kitchenaids are sure wonderful looking! The pumpkin bread is making me hungry.

Posted by: Barb on 11.11.2006 AT 11:28 AM

I bought my kitchen aid a few years back and love it. In our previous home I had difficulty finding a spot for it. I had this little cart that held t.v. trays. That cutie pie mixer fit quite nicely on top. My husband said it looked like I had found it a little pedestal to sit on.

Congrats on the "new addition".

Posted by: Kris on 11.11.2006 AT 11:20 AM

I can go over a month without using my kitchenaid, but every time I fire it up, it's worth every bit of counter space that it takes up. With the holidays coming, it's going to get a workout. Enjoy your new toy!

Posted by: Mandy on 11.11.2006 AT 11:16 AM

I love my KitchenAid, but since I hardly ever bake anymore, it doesn't get much use. I used to bake bread all the time, and that was my favorite use for it.

I have a place in my pantry where it fits -- it's a pull-out drawer. Pretty handy. You'll have to build a new kitchen around the KitchenAid. :)

Posted by: Norma on 11.11.2006 AT 11:10 AM

I love my Kitchen Aid--but it does not live on the counter (we also have very limited counter space). I keep it in the cabinet under the counter, so yes, it's not "immediately" handy--but it only takes me a second to pull it out.

Posted by: Katy on 11.11.2006 AT 11:06 AM

I've had my KitchenAid for over 20 years. And yes, its head is all scuffed up from being shoved under the kitchen cupboards. When we re-did our kitchen it got its own little cupboard with a pop up shelf!

Posted by: Li_B on 11.11.2006 AT 10:53 AM

Ooooh my Kitchen Aid was bought by my parents on a really good deal.(they bought two at the time) It's the smaller one but hey it works for me. It still takes up a bit of space..but it's worth it!

Posted by: Denise on 11.11.2006 AT 10:45 AM

Dale bought me a Kitchen Aid for our first Christmas together. Honestly, it's the best present he ever gave me and I use it all the time.
And to answer your question. Yes, we do eat at the kitchen table. Except when we eat at the dining room table. We're table eaters around here.

Posted by: Carole on 11.11.2006 AT 10:38 AM

I like your creativity, Rachel H!

I've had the same cabinet height problem with our Kitchen Aid. If I ever build my own house I'm having cupboard heights adjusted to accommodate. In the meantime, we got a heavy duty but nice cheap kitchen cart from Ikea, and it does just fine there.

Congrats on your new toy! They're just great - strong, solid, and they last forever.

CONGRATS!
I've been coveting one for as long as I can remember, as well!!
YUM!

Posted by: pippi on 11.11.2006 AT 10:13 AM

My Kitchen Aid mixer was a Mother's Day gift several years ago. I love it! It got to the point where I couldn't even hold up a handmixer for the two minutes needed for cake batter. Anyway... SAME PROBLEM!! It doesn't fit on my countertop, either, nor in any of the handiest cupboards! It has taken up residence on an old microwave cart (which hasn't held a microwave in YEARS) that is on wheels, but isn't wheeled around. It's in the kitchen and kinda-sorta handy to where the mixer is used. I don't know if it would really be used any more if it was on the counter, though... that doesn't seem to be the case with my bread machine. ; )

Mmmmm. Your pumpkin bread looks wonderful.

Posted by: Vicki on 11.11.2006 AT 09:59 AM

When I was getting married, I was given a small handmixer at a shower. I wanted a Kitchen Aid then, but since I now had this little avocado GE model (and being a good yankee), I'd just wait till it died to replace it with my choice.

Almost THIRTY TWO years later, I'm still using the handmixer!! And I'm considered the baker in the family...though my specialty is muffins, for which you only need a good wooden spoon. Which is also from my shower. ;-)

Posted by: Jan on 11.11.2006 AT 09:38 AM

I'm sure if you string a garland or swag of pine over the coffee maker and KitchenAid, they'd make a lovely centre piece to your holiday table. Floating candle in the mixing bowl for ambiance, perhaps?

Posted by: Rachel H on 11.11.2006 AT 09:27 AM

Congratulations and enjoy! It must be the week for small appliances - did you read Kay's love affair with her iron over at Mason Dixon? And look at that! I don't drink coffee either! I knew there was something I loved about you! ;-)

Posted by: Cara on 11.11.2006 AT 09:22 AM

I, too, have a KitchenAid and love it! Your hubby was right, use it girl!
I also have a capuccino maker and don't drink coffee, but I like to make a cafe mocha or hot choc with the froth attatchment on it.
Enjoy!!
