01.07.2007 :: I broke the chicken plate and I am a lemming from way back!

I know. I haven't even walked one mile yet. Why do you think I chose the snail? UPDATE: I walked 1.5 miles! Woot! Still a snail, but a snail that is on my way to 100 miles!
In my defense, I am awaiting healthy lungs after the near bronchitis over the holidays. I know my body and walking with lungs feeling like that is not a good thing. But I have no excuse today. I will walk today and get a mile or 2 on there.
The weather, it is freaking me out. Yesterday it was 72F degrees. That's 22C to the rest of the world. I live in New England people. This would be fine if I were Donna. But I live north of the equator. Where is my snow? Where is my cold? I like the seasons, I do. Today is supposed to be "colder" at 50F degrees. Hrmph.
In other lemming news, I have also joined in on the Picture a Day. I need to figure some more things out for this one, perhaps with some help from my computer guru. Every girl needs one. But you can check out my SPOT here. I will be perpetually behind on the picture count as I am joining in late. And what am I thinking anyway, joining in all this stuff? I am a notoriously bad joiner. I don't follow through. It's a proven fact. But I join anyway. Bah.
And today's picture?
DSC07920.JPG
I'm just sick about it. Not the picture itself but the broken state of the chicken plate. SICK. I broke it. I have had the plate for exactly a week. My friend MADE It for me. She painted it from her own thoughts and used her hands to paint it. For me. And I broke it. BROKEN CHICKEN PLATE. I'm sick about it. If you heard a heartbroken scream yesterday echoing across the land, it was me. Did I ever tell you that I break things? I don't mean to. But I do. Alot. Not on purpose. The delicious irony of it all is that I love to drink out of glass, eat off of glass, I love glass things. I break glass things. See? Complicated, aren't I?

You can mend that plate.....do it when you are alone....be sure your hands are 100% clean....and less glue is best. Good luck!

Here in Oregon, we're having a very cold spell: 20 degrees F overnight in Portland, 17 below in NE Oregon. Want to trade? Regarding the chicken plate, can you glue it together and turn it into wall art? Or do a mosaic? A friend of mine has some plastic dinner plates decorated by her children; they're not good in the microwave (the decorated layer blisters easily), but they don't break, either. They're older than any other plate in her house because she breaks stuff too. Not to mention more precious!

Oh, Sandy, I feel your pain! My mom painted a Cookie Monster cookie jar when I was a kid, and when I had my own kids she gave it to me. I *loved* this thing. One of my boys accidentally broke the lid (Cookie Monster's head) last spring. While I didn't holler at him over it, as it was an accident and he clearly felt awful, I really was just sick about it. I too love (and break) glass pretties.

Quick! Glue it back together and use it as a display plate where all can enjoy looking at it!!!!

Posted by: Cathy on 01.10.2007 AT 12:33 AM

You can do it! After all, it is only 7.7 miles per week, right? :-)

I am so sorry for your precious plate...

Aww, poor chicken plate. I made my husband a bowl (back when he was my boyfriend) and I broke it while I was doing dishes . . . my friend took the pieces and mosaiced it into a new piece of art (a tray). Maybe you could do something like that . . . or have someone do it for you! All is not lost!

Posted by: Becca on 01.09.2007 AT 03:48 PM

Ouch. I know how you feel. How about some glue?

This northeast weather SUCKS. I like not having to wrap my coat around me, but I, too, miss the snow. The chill. The sweaters. The scarves wrapped snug around my neck.

Next summer, the garden will be overrun with all the rodents who love this kind of winter. Not happy, me.

I've gone and lost my comment. If it shows up please ignore me. As I was saying, I had a run where I broke three fragile gifts in a row. My DH would say it's only stuff. That didn't help at all.

Oh no! The plate!

(I specialize in bowls myself. I can also fall up stairs. We are the gifted ones.)

Oh, that plate is adorable!! I say make the lemons into lemonade, girl, by turning that cute plate into a mosaic tray or some other such fun thing!!

I'm looking at your bloggity stuff tonight--will write! Love you, sugar. xoxo

I choose plastic for just that reason. I just need to know there is something breakable within a one-mile radius and it's broken. So sorry about the plate. I heard that scream over here, you know.

Posted by: Kimberly on 01.08.2007 AT 02:22 PM

Awww that's a shame about the Chicken Plate. Perhaps your friend will make another. Is it possible to glue it together and not use it to eat from? Good luck on the weather, seems there may be some normalcy heading your way.

Posted by: Carol on 01.08.2007 AT 01:31 PM

The weather sounds perfect to me. Mild, no mosquitoes. I hear you might be getting a break on all the el nino warmth soon, though.

The broken plate is so sad, but you know it makes your friend happy that you actually used her plate enough for it to get broken. It's like knitting something for somebody that they wear so much they get snags and holes. Or the worn out teddy bear with one eye and the stuffing sticking out. It doesn't matter that you only had it a week because glass things get loved to death in a different way.

Hi Sandy,

Sorry about the broken plate...maybe it's just a proportional thing, you know, like, because you own more glass objects since you love them so much...it only *seems* like you break more!

Hi Sandy;

Sorry about your cute little chicken plate! I've broken some cute little mementoes, as well and it has broken my heart after. Anyway, go buy some super glue, repair it and put it in a nice little hutch cabinet. Or, perhaps maybe and this might be stretching it, but you can take it to a laser photo place and they can print you out a new plate, without the cracks in it. (just a thought). Anyway, I'm from Webster, MA. Good job getting motivated to move on out the door! (I'm a runner, getting ready to start training for Boston '07 again).

Oh no, I am so sorry you broke your chicken plate. It was 70 degrees when I left for work today, not so bad for Alabama.

Posted by: Paula on 01.07.2007 AT 08:00 PM

Sorry to hear about your plate!

Posted by: Kelly on 01.07.2007 AT 07:28 PM

Oh that's sad. I understand. I've been dropping things left and right lately. I have lots of broken and chipped dishes to show for it.

Posted by: Sydney on 01.07.2007 AT 06:58 PM

Sandy, There are artisans who take broken piece of china and fit them into plaster to make useable items like trivets/tables/etc. I think there are kits at Michaels/craft stores to do-it-yourself, too. You could make a trivet out of the pieces. Or, ask at an artisan's coop in your area if there is someone who could do it for you if you don't want to try. I have seen these finished pieces at fine craft shows like the Expo in Boston. Don't through out the plate just yet! Just a thought...Kate/MA

Oh, I'm so sorry about the beautiful plate! :(
It's only the edges though. I would get it repaired and buy a nice plate stand, then put it somewhere nice that no-one touches.
The weather has been weird here too - hardly any days over 30C, and it's supposed to be summer. Usually it's rare to have days under 30C. You'd better get snow next christmas - we're hoping to see it in person ;)

Posted by: Donna on 01.07.2007 AT 06:12 PM

Bummer. Here's an idea - there used to be a pottery place near me that would take broken plates and do a mosaic from them - ie, they would make a frame for a mirror or some other decorative item using the pieces so you could still enjoy the original in a new form.

I have a broken china plate that I have wanted to do that with for years.
Never followed through on it.

I am so sorry to hear about your broken chicken plate. I thought I heard someone grieving yesterday all the way to South Georgia.
Please come to my birthday party today. Maybe that will make you feel better. You are one of my favorite knitting blogs. Plus you are from New Hampshire and my dad was born there many years ago.

Posted by: Cathy on 01.07.2007 AT 03:19 PM

UGH....I HATE it when I break things!! I am so sorry.....it does look like the edges are clean breaks....how about a bit of super glue? Maybe it will glue back good enough that you could at least use a plate rack and hang on the wall somewhere?

Good luck on your 100 miles!!!

Oh Sandy! I've done that too--broken something I loved mere minutes after receiving or buying it. :-( It's an awful feeling. But get youself some krazy glue, put it back together as neatly as you can, and when it's dry, get a plate hanger and hang it on the wall in your kitchen, or near your favorite knitting chair. Then you can still enjoy it! :-)

Sorry about the chicken plate. Esp when it was made for you and a one of a kind. I did hear a scream that echoed across the land, but it was my daughter in the shower after a black hairy spider crawled up her arm! It must have prevented me from hearing yours.

Posted by: Manise on 01.07.2007 AT 02:03 PM

Oh no! I'm sorry, sweetie. Put it back together. Oh, and blame the cat for it breaking. ;^)

Posted by: Cookie on 01.07.2007 AT 01:45 PM

i'm sorry about the chicken plate. i know how heartbroken you must feel. but don't throw it away. try to fix it or make a mosaic out of it.

and thanks for joining the picture a day thingy. i'm not a tyrannical task master -- if you miss days here and there that's ok. i'll still let you play ;)

i just wish more people would play.

Oh dear, I'm so sorry to hear about the chicken plate, that's terrible. I wish I had some great Chicken Plate fixing comment to leave.
As far as this acursed weather is concerned. Shreek! I am ready to pull my hair out as well. I am from upstate NY, I have recently moved to PA, and this weather is killing me. I need snow people, I feel like a fish out of water. Where the heck is the snow?!?!?!

Posted by: Tracey on 01.07.2007 AT 12:06 PM

Sandy! I'm sobbing for your chicken plate. And for you. Because I know how awful it is...I'm a pottery lover. Not glass so much, but pottery. AND I have this one particular set of over-sized coke float glasses that I love, love, LOVE, and I think they are irreplaceable, and I'm watching my family break them one by one. I might have even broken one myself, but I'm not admitting to it.

Yay for joining and not following through. I'm fairly good at that myself. :)

Posted by: Norma on 01.07.2007 AT 11:30 AM

Note to self: Only serve Sandy with paper plates.
Another note to self: Only give Sandy Corningware.

Posted by: Dave Daniels on 01.07.2007 AT 11:25 AM

Oh no! The weather outside is delightful, but strange indeed.

Posted by: Kathy on 01.07.2007 AT 11:04 AM

Such a bummer! I'm in the glue it and hang it camp. It will look lovely hanging somewhere in your house. Really. It will.

Posted by: Teresa C on 01.07.2007 AT 11:02 AM

Sorry about the plate, that's rough.
The weather is crazy. At least the sun is out today.

Posted by: Carole on 01.07.2007 AT 11:01 AM

Stick it back together! Hang it on the wall!

I'm the same way sometimes, and I have a cabinet full of chipped stuff to show for it. I even have some of my mom's chipped stuff.

I hate this weather, too. Where is our snow? When will we be able to wrap ourselves up in all our knitting? Knitters live for winter, don't they?

Posted by: Jane on 01.07.2007 AT 10:11 AM

Nice work on the picture-a-day! Remember, you don't have to upload the pix every day, you just have to TAKE a picture every day. I know you can do it!

Posted by: claudia on 01.07.2007 AT 10:10 AM

Oh no!! That's so sad!

Posted by: scout on 01.07.2007 AT 10:09 AM

That would kill me too! I'm sorry! And the weather is scaring the beejeezus out of me. I ran yesterday in shorts and a t-shirt and when I cam home G asked if it was cold when I started out. I told him it was HOT about five seconds into my run. Crazy crazy crazy!

Posted by: Cara on 01.07.2007 AT 10:01 AM

Sandy: hugs!!
