02.04.2007 :: You're as cold as ice

Get a blanket before I begin my tale. Go ahead. You'll need it!
My story starts at noon on Sunday. This is what the weather conditions were. Very very cold. Frigid even.

That's farenheit, just so you know.
Around noon, I dressed as warmly as I possibly could, which you know to mean that I put lots of wool on. But some days, there is not enough wool.
I drove in my heated car down to the beach, where there was a Polar Bear Fundraiser for the homeless. I got out and walked to the water's edge seeing this:

Ice. On the ocean. It's okay to pull your blanket a bit tighter now. I understand.
This is how I looked.

I was shivering. The wind was biting. My feet? Were icy.

Actually standing IN ice.
Brrr. Right?
Over 50 people took a swim this day in the icy ocean, my friend, all to raise awareness (and money) for the plight of the homeless.

All in!!

I'm amazed that no one froze to the spot.

I'm impressed with these people! Because you know all I did was open my checkbook. I'd gladly do it again, too!

Now, what is the point of wearing a sweater in that icy water, huh? LOL

Crazy crazy people. Hypothermia. Sudden cardiac slowdown. Helllloooo?

oh wow! Polar bear dipping. Brrrr. While I admit to loving the cold, I don't like the idea of cold AND wet!

Posted by: Steph VW on 02.06.2007 AT 04:13 PM

What brave souls! I could never do that!

Posted by: Kelly on 02.06.2007 AT 03:45 PM

I could *so* NOT do that! I am a swimmer and I really couldn't do that! I have trouble getting into the pool each day. Those people are really good.

My teeth are chattering just looking at those pictures, we used to do Polar Bear Swim fundraisers in one of the lakes near us. One of the guys in our community had a hot tub rental business and he would bring his hot tubs and set them up for the folks after their chilly dip.

Thank your lucky stars you're not in Chicago... wind chill about -25 this morning. We're hoping for a "high" of +2F. Ugh.

Oh man. There has got to be a better way to raise money! 'Cause that is CRAZY. Can't you have a heart attack from water thst cold?...

Great cause!!! I'd offered to knit those swimmers blankets instead of getting out in the water!! Stay warm! I'm trying, but it's 1 degree here in Milwaukee!!!

Not a L Street Brownie, huh? LOl... my dad used to take us to see them jump into the harbor (hah-bah) on new year's day. I think my brother Jonathan did it as a kid actually--- he thought it was funny--- ran right in with the rest of them. :)

Umm.. what happened to your amyrillus?

Posted by: Kate on 02.05.2007 AT 02:24 PM

BRRRRRRRR..............

But what a wonderful cause!!!!!!!!!

Complete insanity. Those folks, not you!

OMG- not even a blanket could have prepared me for what I saw in your photos! Kudos to those who support the homeless who I'm sure don't have much in the way of wool to wear during these cold, cold days exposed to the elements 24/7.

Good. Lord.

Crazy people! Good for you for cheering and donating!

Ooh, I did this two weeks ago here in Maryland. But it was 40 degrees, and no ice this year. Still chilly! I wrapped myself up in wool directly after, believe me.

Yikes, those people are crazy! I love that Wordsworth poem.

Posted by: Barb on 02.05.2007 AT 12:31 AM

Brrrr!

The cold left here and headed your way! You look great all wrapped up in wool ;-)

Posted by: margene on 02.04.2007 AT 10:12 PM

Definitely. Checkbook...open. Freezing cold water...as far from me as possible!

Posted by: Carol on 02.04.2007 AT 10:05 PM

Yay for opening your checkbook -- and Sandy, your warm heart would have kept you warm. I kid you not.
