02.14.2007 :: In which my toes get squishy

DSC08261.JPG

Well. Today we had snow, rain, ice, sleet and freezing rain. Leaving work, thoughts of our valentine's dinner that I am cooking dancing through my head, I arrived at my car. My car had a good layer of snow and ice and waterlogged ick on it. And it was raining down ice pellets of a good size out of the sky on my head. When I finished cleaning the car I was plenty wet from soaking hair to wet feet. That's okay. I have a Valentine's dinner to prepare. As I back out of the space, my car gets stuck on the pile of snow plowed up behind my car. sigh. Okay, I got out of the car, and chipped away at the pile of snow keeping my car off the ground. I chipped away at this pile of super snow (holding up a car, leaping buildings in a single bound) with a snow brush. Now, my hair is dripping wet with freezing water and ice chips. It's okay. Dinner, you know. I finally break through the super pile of snow and get on my way. My coat is soaked through, ice is falling off of my body and landing all over the inside of my new car and I notice that my toes are soaked and a bit numb. Dinner. It's okay. As I'm driving home (which, thankfully is only a 2 mile drive), when I step on the brake, all of the wet snow that is piled on top of the car slides down onto the windshield. You know, the thing I need to SEE out of? The thing that now has a mound of snow on it enabling me to see nothing. Which is highly discouraged not only during a snowstorm but in any weather. So, I pull over and get my trusty plastic snowbrush that has already dug my car off of a snow cliff and I put on my soggy, cold mittens. I brush the water that is dripping from my hair out of my eyes. And I clean off the windshield. Again. This time, pulled over on the side of the road. )What is coming at that moment? can you guess?) I'm almost done with the snow and he cannot wait one measly minute for me to move? A snow plow. And it IS plowing snow. But it is also plowing water. Lots and lots of water that cannot drain anywhere because there is waterlogged snow and ice clogging the drains. Frankly, it looks like he's plowing a mini tidal wave. And that mini tidal wave? Did not look so mini as it was washing over my feet, I'll tell ya! And that water is cold, my friend. Colder than my feet have ever been while in shoes.
The rest of the ride is uneventful, which is good because I have a friggin dinner to cook. A romantic one too, if I have my say. I pull into the driveway, relieved to be home. I swing my leg out of the car and step into a foot of standing snow/water/ice. Oh, goody. You think you are wet and cold driveway? You can't phaze me! I HAVE A DINNER TO COOK! I slog up the steps, bleary eyed from the water that is in my eyes, my hair stringy and dripping like mad. My feet actually making a squishing noise. But things look up because as I open the door, a box from Beaverslide is safely in there. Dry, thank you very much Mr. Mailman. My yarn for flyingdales. I cannot look at it yet because I'm afraid that my sogginess will felt the yarn. I must strip out of my clothes, shriveled up toes staring up at me.
And the kicker of it all? I cannot even find any matching SOCKS. I have plenty of handknit socks in my home but all I can find is ONE. This is the thing that tips me over the edge.
So, wearing one handknit wool sock and one plain old sock, I dry my hair and am now looking forward to a cup of hot tea and a nice meal with my honey.
But I wonder, what shape will Andy be in when he gets home? I'm thinking that steak, garlic mashed potatoes, butternut squash and homemade carrot cake with cream cheese frosting will help thaw him out. And I'll still be wearing my one handknit sock. Dammit.

OMG!!! LOL I can feel your pain since I lived in weather like that for 5 years. I was very happy to move back to FL thankyouverymuch!! However I probably should save this entry and re read it again in AUG when I'm shriveled up in the house from all the external heat.
BTW Dinner sounded YUMMY!

Brrrr!!!! Let's hear it for those wonderful slippers you're wearing, eh? Dang, girl! That's one helluva day you had. I hope the dinner was fabulous, and that you got in some heart-warming snuggletime with your honey.
xoxo

I hope dinner went well - we had a frozen Valentine's Day here as well in Delaware.

Posted by: Jo on 02.16.2007 AT 08:27 PM

Sounds like you need a little pampering.

Posted by: Carol on 02.16.2007 AT 04:09 PM

Is there anything else to add to all those comments? I'd also ask the cat for the second sock. Thank god for warm slippers and btw, nice PJs.:)

Are those felted slippers you're wearing? I have wanted to make a pair for ages ,I can just imagine putting them on after a bath following a freezing day at work(not as freezing as your day but cold anyway) Must go for a pattern hunt, any recomendations?
One hand knit sock or not,at least one foot is warm,LOL

Thank goodness for warm knits for feet and hot tea!!!

Spring will be here soon, spring will be here soon....keep chanting that!!

Oh, YUCK. I hope your dinner was wonderfully romantic, to make up for all of that.

Posted by: Ruth on 02.15.2007 AT 12:41 PM

You poor dear. I do hope that you are sufficiently thawed out now and that your dinner was uber romantic. We finally got our snow here in PA, which was, shortly after, covered in ice. It looked like someone shellacked my car. I didn't go anywhere yesterday.

And to think - I've been praying for snow here in Alabama. You may have just changed my mind! I hope your dinner was fabulous and your honey made it home safely!

Oh, sandy... I am so sorry. I slid off the road 3 times on the way into work, only to be sent home about 40 minutes after I arrived. So, my 20 minute commute home turned into 1hour, 40 minutes... and the driveway, street and stairs were a mess. The ONLY reason we had a V-Day dinner last night was b/c I was home, working on papers, and I needed the occasional "get up and stretch" break. Dan came home, wet, miserable and icy. He had icicles hanging off the back of his hood! he brought home chocolates (yay!)and I made sure his clothes were popped straight out of the dryer to put on.

By the by, I will be at SPA this weekend if you are going. Also, I have recommitted to knitting a *&^% thrummed mitten. If I can make the Anemois, I can make thrummed mitts!

Posted by: Kate on 02.15.2007 AT 10:46 AM

Amen to all of that, Sandy! Just change "driving" to "slogging home on foot from the train station" and that was my day. And we had chicken parm instead of steak. ;-)

You are intrepid...and thank goodness you are now warm. Hope you and Andy had a lovely dinner after your eventful ride home!

That is commitment to the one you love!!!'

My back yard is a giant icy puddle this morning. I'm just hoping it doesn't decide to head for my basement while I'm at work!

Oh, San-San! Friggin' snow plows! I thought you were going to say that he plowed you and your car up. How did I miss this entry last night?

I hope dinner was a success, anyway. Today we have four feet of snow, drifting and blowing, and it's 1 degree above zero. (the wind chill must be about 40 below) Everything is closed here until noon, which I'm hoping they will extend beyond that, because I'm frankly chicken to get on that interstate....Honestly. Me, chicken. You know that's got to be bad.

The Mystery of the Missing Socks...where could they be?

Posted by: claudia on 02.14.2007 AT 11:29 PM

Snow plows have a knack for undoing things and soaking one to the bone! I'm sure your dinner was wonderful once you were dry and warmed up. Hope your basement is dry. Fortunately we had various forms of snow, but no sleet or freezing rain.

time & tide (and snowplows) wait for no man. here we don't end up with so much water, but i've had it happen where i've just finished digging out the very edge of the driveway from the last snow plow going through (which usually ends up being twice the depth of the snow otherwise, and packed as hard as diamonds), another one comes by, and fills the end of my driveway in again. argh. and then there's the sidewalk at hubbie's house. he lives on a snow route (which is good, it's one of the first streets plowed), and the sidewalk resides about 2 feet from the curb. since it is a snow route, they tend to plow it at a high rate of speed, which means the walk that i so carefully scooped is also recovered in double the amount of diamond strength snow, as well as the end of the driveway. i need to move to the country.

and we had garlic mashed potatoes, too! (our entree was lobster & salmon, though. hubbie won't eat squash :( )

Oh golly, what a story!

Posted by: Laurie on 02.14.2007 AT 09:47 PM

My socks go missing too, but the hand knit ones are the ones that will put you over the edge.

I have never seen a snow brush.
Well, I have never experienced snow...

Posted by: Cathy on 02.14.2007 AT 09:45 PM

Holy crap! And that is why I prefer snow to sleet! Hope the rest of your day went well.

Posted by: Carol on 02.14.2007 AT 07:50 PM

Ugh. Yeah, it was about like that around here today, too. Thankfully, I was warned off the mid-calf deep puddle in my work parking lor by my boss stepping into it first. Gotta love the wintry mix, eh?

Stay in tonight - stay warm & dry!

Awwww, honey. Thanks for the chuckle. I hope your dinner is fabulous!

Bless your heart....what a DAY!!!! Sending you warm thoughts and hope your Valentine evening is better than the afternoon!!!

Oh my, that is a really, really cold story . . . at least both slippers look really warm . . .

I bet Fig knows where the socks are hiding.

I hope you have a lovely warm Valentine's night. *hugs*
