02.19.2007 :: Solve my problems, will you please?
This sweater truly does not want to be finished yet. I have knit and reknit the sleeves and reknit them again for good measure. And honestly? I can't make them better. After trying it on for the umpteenth time, I decided that I can live with the narrow sleeves. It really is all about how it fits, not how it looks laid out for the blogging world to see, isn't it?
I'd like to say that it is finished, this Green Mountain Mohair, V neck knitting pure and simple sweater. But.
How about those button bands. Specically the LEFT (your left) button band. Can you say bunchy? I posed this question to Norma, who said she needed to see it, which made sense, so I pose the question to the world as I know it:
Did I pick up too few stitches? Or too many?
I can't wrap my head around this question. I can't find the answer in the recess of my mind. But I knew where to go for help. It will be okay.
~~
In other mundane life news, yesterday I woke up having lost every single thing on my section of the computer. I toyed with the idea of restoring to a past non problematic day but did not because Andy's tax info was still stored on his section of the computer. Losing Uncle Sam's work would have been well, grump inducing. I lost all of my photos, links, you can imagine that it was only stuff but stuff that I loved!
This morning though, all is back to normal. My pictures are back. Links there. Huh. A computer mystery indeed. I did however, forget the old adage:
If the glove does not fit, you must acquit.
NO, no, wrong adage.
The other one:
Having computer problems? Reboot.

My IT Support friend hates this TV series as it's 'unrepresentative', but whenever I ask my IT support guy what I should do, he always repeats the mantra 'Have you tried turning it off and on again?'

Despite my Sweater Impairment, I looked at the picture and thought, more sweater than band, too few. Imagine my relief to discover that everyone who actually knows how to make a sweater agrees with me.
And brava to you for your progress so far, and for not burying it in a snowbank and forgetting about it.

Run some anti-virus/anti-spyware scans too and if that happens more than once, unplug at night too. Nothing gets lost, no one can interfere with a computer that isn't hooked up to the net and you conserve a bit of energy. I don't get as many corrupted files and weird e-mails since I started turning off the power at night.

too few. i have a cotton tank i knit for the daughter, with the same problem, only with the arm holes. except with me, one side has too many. sigh. i think that UFO is about 3 years old.

I JUST finished the same sweater (post going up in the morning) looks like you picked up too few. I ended up picking them up all the way around instead of picking up separately for the neck and bands. I love the Green Mtn. Mohair!!

Wow, that's weird! Were you imbibing while you picked up the stitches for that button band? ;-) I can't think of any other reason for it to look so strange. I've seen your Everyday Cardigan, and I know you can do a perfectly lovely button band!

As they've said... too few.
I always pick up 3 stictches for every 4 rows, I find that to work almost always.
Pick up stitch in 3 rows, skip 1 row....

Hi Sandy - a long time ago, you posted about using a magnetic board to keep track of your chart while knitting...can you send me a photo or a link to show me what you are referring to? I am looking for anything to make chart reading easier!

You have had advice from the best. Do the math. Do you have Sally Melville's books? Or Nancie Wiseman. They'll give you the right guide lines.

Thank goodness other people were here first to tell you the answer to your question because I don't know. It's a pretty color, though.

I just finished making that same pattern. Did you block or iron the edge of the body before you picked up the stitches for the button band? That can cause the distortion, as the yarn from the body and the yarn from the button band will be different. I counted the stitches I picked up on the first button band I attached, and made sure I picked up exactly the same on the other side. It appears that you might have picked up too many stitches on the right band. It'll be worth it to frog and redo. Gorgeous yarn!

Don't ask me about the computer. I just opened up a virus not too long ago, so don't count on me for that. On the sweater issue I try to pick up about 3 stitches for every 4 rows of knitting. It's not a rule, but my personal rule of thumb and it seems to work out good for me. Good luck with it.

Aarh! I wonder where the data went? Very mysterious, but I'm glad the outcome was happy. I love the green sweater...I vote for cast on too few.

I hate it when good hard drives go bad.

it's a lovely color--and that's all I have to say about that.
off to back up the computer--

Oh, so many too few. (Is that oxymoronic?)
Posted by: Theresa on 02.19.2007 AT 10:20 PM
Yep, too few. Oh, and the computer (or any other electronic thing) needs to know that you know where the power plug is.
Posted by: Diane on 02.19.2007 AT 09:43 PM
That, dear lady, is too few.
It looks wonderful other than that though.

FOR PETE'S SAKE! I've been sitting all day refreshing my Bloglines and it's been empty. And just now you're lit up, so I come over here to find you posted this at 9:00 this morning? Shoddy, Bloglines. Shoddy.
Yeah, you picked up too few.
You cracked me up with your adage. Hoot-hoooooot! LOL. XO
Posted by: Norma on 02.19.2007 AT 07:21 PM
Too few. But let me ask a question. Is the sweater bit blocked? Because if so, and the yarn you are using to knit on ISN'T blocked, that might be a difficulty depending on how much the fabric changes, pre-block v. post-block.
In any event, both sides should be the same.....
Posted by: claudia on 02.19.2007 AT 07:02 PM
Too few. If it was too many, you'd have more button band than sweater. However, I have yet to knit a cardi, so my opinion is worth about as much as Fig's.

Looks like too few to me. It's a drag, but you know the end result will be worth it.
I find the sleeves on KP&S patterns to be a bit narrow, too ... mind you, I had to knit two (sweaters) before I figured that out, so you're smarter than I.
Posted by: Ruth on 02.19.2007 AT 06:43 PM
My guess would also be too few stitches causes bunching like that, whereas too many stitches would look different.
Posted by: meg on 02.19.2007 AT 06:40 PM
I would say, too few stitches were picked up. Other than that, it is a beautiful sweater and I can't wait to see it on.
Posted by: Tracey on 02.19.2007 AT 03:43 PM
Nice yarn in that sweater, for all its woes.
A restore shouldn't make you lose data, unless the program holding it was installed after the restore point. Even then, you should be able to save the data separately before the restore. Wish I could see your computer. I'd be more help with that than the sweater.

Hi Sandy! Nice sweater. Definitely too few stitches in your right front button band. But the left side looks good. I suggest counting the picked up stitches on the good side and trying for the same number on the other side, within reason.
Reason, BTW, measures about 3/8 of an inch. More than that and you'll notice the difference. ;-)

Looks like too few to this completely inexperienced eye. Or too far apart in some cases. Let the smart people opine.
Missed you this weekend.

I teach newbys how to use their computers. I start with this mantra. Rule #1: It Is Not Your Fault. Rule # 2: There is this little guy who lives in your computer just waiting for you to forget to back up.
My little guy's name is Ryan and if I ever get my hands on the drunken.....

Too few, I think. That is the most beautiful color. (Must finish projects, cannot buy more yarn.)
PS We just bought a house in your town.

You're right--it WILL be okay. If the sweater don't fit, you must reknit.
Beautiful, beautiful yarn, that Green Mountain Spinnery stuff.
xoxo

Wow, you've posted a lot since I've been gone. Thanks for the good read.
Hey, While I was away I was going to tell people who wanted my pattern to ask you for it :-) Not.
