04.30.2007 :: raindrops on pansies and whiskers on kittens

Raindrops on pansies
Fig's whiskers
Gryffindor sock
This yarn seems a bit impossible to catch the inner beauty of the colors. Shy colors, as reds tend to be. I am loving working with this yarn, which is Dalegarn Tiur. However, I am knitting according to Priscilla Gibson Roberts short row heel as seen in Interweave Knits Favorite Socks.
This is my first time doing this type of heel and well, it's not going well.
YO short row heel
Besides a dropped stitch (#&$&^@*%^#*%@*) it just looks like...well...ass. There's no other way to describe it. Ug. Ly. I'm at a loss. I really would like to do this type of heel. Norma has a plan for me. I guess it's a 12 step plan for short row heels. Or something.
Short row heel
The other side is acceptable. Non-ass like.
Is it just me?
Is it just me? Or is that Santa Cloud?
~~~
as always click any picture to go to the flickr page. Does anybody notice how I spell flicr diffent everytime?
Weird.
Lovely shots! I especially like the pansy and Santa Cloud.
What a find! the cloud, I mean. I also love the pansy picture, and your cat.
"Besides a dropped stitch (#&$&^@*%^#*%@*) it just looks like...well...ass." - Couldn't help but giggle because there have been so many times that I've looked at my work when doing something new...and said the EXACT SAME THING!!!
Hi,
I found one great tutorial for short row heels. And even english is not my first language, it is very easy and neat. Try it here:
Good luck :)
Love the pics , especially the pansy . I've never atttempted a short row heel , or toe up socks for that matter .Should try it sometime. The colours of your socks are beautiful , very cheery !
ho ho ho
Yes. I saw it immediately. Less than 8 months to knit for Christmas is the obvious message!
Posted by: kathy b on 05.02.2007 AT 06:01 PM
Yeah, looks like Santa to me too. Gorgeous pansy and kitty shots. I have not yet mastered anybody's short row heel.
SANTA CLOUD! IT IS A SIGN! TIME FOR PRESENTS!
Miss you at knit night!
I just finished one sock with that PGR short-row heel and it kicked my butt five or six times. I almost gave up but at that point it was a matter of pride. Purling 3 tog through the back loops is just a dropped stitch waiting to happen, IMHO. But it looks good when finished. (The sixth time.)
Posted by: jessie on 05.02.2007 AT 05:53 AM
Fabulous photos! And yes, that is a Santa cloud.
Posted by: Jane on 05.01.2007 AT 10:38 PM
Beautiful pictures!
Posted by: Kelly on 05.01.2007 AT 05:54 PM
TOTALLY Santa Cloud. I even thought it in my head before I read what you wrote!
Great minds, and all that .......
Posted by: Ruth on 05.01.2007 AT 02:05 PM
Sandy, I also use flickr for my pics...Here's a tip, resize the pic to the size you like before you save it to flickr. Then just use the largest size. It will be whatever size you saved it as.
An ass heel...hmmm. Short rows scare me. It's one of my loftiest sock goals.
Aww Fig, such gorgeous whiskers, those ol raindrops and pansies just don't hold a candle to those noble beauties.
Holy Moly! I mean HO-HO-HOly moly...it IS Sanda cloud.
I think my husband would find it really weird that I know your cat's name. ;o) Great photos!
Have you seen Cosmic Pluto's short row heel tutorial? I just completed my first short row heels and found her pictures invaluable. I'm a visual learner. I still have a couple of holes, but nothing I can't fix. Good luck! I think the socks look great!
Posted by: elizabeth on 05.01.2007 AT 10:28 AM
GREAT pics!!! I haven't tried the short row heel yet...so I'm no help but I hope you can work it out!
GORGEOUS pansy picture -- oh, I just love it. I've got to get planting!!
Posted by: Vicki on 05.01.2007 AT 09:07 AM
Give me a heel flap any day...I have pushed short row heels to the bottom of my "must learn to do adequately" list. maybe one of these days....love your sock tho!
Posted by: Lisa In Oregon on 05.01.2007 AT 07:58 AM
ha! santa cloud!!!
i'm not a fan of short row heels either. you'll figure it out though.
Posted by: maryse on 05.01.2007 AT 07:30 AM
Ahh.. the short row heel. Personally, i'm a flap kind of girl. I have dabbled in the short row, but return to the flap. I used the misocrafty and wendy's tutorials together and it worked out nicely.
As many have said, short row heels get better with practice. One side always does look a bit looser no matter how many you knit tho....the p3tog thru the back loop tightens up that side more than the other and unfortunately, there is no good looking corresponding technique for the k3tog side. With practice, you'll hardly notice the difference and one you get the hang of the PGR short row heel, flap heels will seem like such a chore! Just keep swimming Sandy! :)
Posted by: Debi on 04.30.2007 AT 11:38 PM
Honestly, I'm not a fan of the PGR heels either; it's nice to see there's someone else out there with the same feelings. I like the short row heel Wendy talked about in Knitty a long time back.
Posted by: Lydia on 04.30.2007 AT 10:36 PM
Gorgeous pictures, most especially the raindrops on pansies, beautiful! And yes, I think that is definitely a santa cloud!
Posted by: Kelly on 04.30.2007 AT 09:58 PM
I finally mastered kitchenered toes with Laurie's help. Short row heels may have to be next. I think it's probably something that has to be done over and over again ad nauseum for it to finally click and make sense. You'll get it- I'm sure the process of getting there is plenty irritating though. You go girl!
Posted by: Manise on 04.30.2007 AT 09:22 PM
Blame Norma. I blame Claudia all the time. I have that woman's book. Doesn't make a damn bit of sense to me. Wrap&Turn, baby! Love the pansies, rain and the kitty. ♥
Posted by: Cookie on 04.30.2007 AT 09:19 PM
Definitely a Santa cloud. That pansy picture made my day:)
**singing**
Nice yarn on needles and short rows on stockings...
You'll learn to love them, I know it sounds shocking.
Keep working 'round and the problem will stop...
Next you'll stop knitting your socks from the top!
Some of us are born without the short-row-heel gene. It's just the way we are. Sadly, I was also born without the Kitchener gene. It does make sock knitting challenging. ;-)
Posted by: Beth S. on 04.30.2007 AT 07:05 PM
Oh, GREAT. Now you got that song in my head. Thanks, Sandy!
So.... I have a plan. Yes, I do. I must remember to execute that plan. :)
Posted by: Norma on 04.30.2007 AT 06:55 PM
Santa Cloud! Oh, Sandy. Man, I love you, grrlfriend.
Posted by: Carole on 04.30.2007 AT 06:34 PM
It's all so beautiful! Even the asshat heel..you'll figure it out...I have faith in you.
Posted by: margene on 04.30.2007 AT 06:34 PM
Ho! Ho! Ho! :)
The short row heels will come with time. But once you pick it up, you'll love them!
Posted by: Helen on 04.30.2007 AT 06:08 PM
Santa!
Posted by: --Deb on 04.30.2007 AT 06:05 PM
That's the song my sister and I always sing to the kids before they go to sleep.
LOVE the pansy shot!
Posted by: Cara on 04.30.2007 AT 05:44 PM
Julie Andrews is singing in my head about her favorite things! I think that is the most beautiful pansy photo I've ever seen.
I sure hope you get a grasp on the short-row heel. And then clue me in - I could use a 12-step program myself, as I have not yet been successful at knitting one. It's heel flaps for me all the way.
