05.06.2007 :: Roots, Avocado Cam version

If at first you don't succeed at a short row heel, then give up and do an old faithful, Mr. Heel Flap. It has always served me well and is a must have especially when this sock is a gift. A gift should NOT be used as a guinea pig.
And I've got to admit that I am much happier reverting back to the familiar. I am an old codger set in my ways, I am.
This weekend has been filled (and I mean FILLED) with college kids moving home. They are not home for good yet, Bethany will be done Friday and Derek next Friday, but most of their stuff hit the homestead this weekend. All available corners look something like this:

Although I am never, even on a good day, Mrs. Clean, I have come to appreciate the value of a room free of clutter. Almost. I mean, MY stuff is not clutter, right? It's my STUFF. But THEIR stuff? You can see my point, can't you?
(And just for the sake of arguments, yarn is NEVER clutter)
AVOCADO CAM
Not much to see yet. In fact, most of my photos I took are blurry and unuseable. But coupled with the fact that there is not a sprout yet, I will show you these 2 pictures and you can multiply them in your mind.

This is one dramatic crack that happened almost immediately. No sign of any sprout yet. Avocado needs roots!
And this one:

Not as dramatic but a crack nonetheless. No sprout in sight.
This concludes this very thrilling version of AVOCADO CAM.
Try to contain yourselves.

Sunshine on my pansies, makes me happy!
Hope your life is filled with good stuff too!

I love your color choices for those socks. I made a stranded hat this winter in similar colors and I just love it!

You'll enjoy the kids back I am sure...great looking sock!

I from time to time toy with [gasp] trying something different!! with socks, but then I, too, think "why change?!" and continue on with my top down, heel flap wonders. I figure the time it would take me to mess around and try something new, I could have cranked out at least one pair of socks. Happy Wednesday!!

I am inexplicably drawn to the avocado cam despite the lack of sprouts or roots!

I have yet to switch to short-row heels too, since heel flaps always worked out and the socks are fine. But I guess someday I'll try short-row heels just so I know I can do it.
I'm not sure you'd consider it a "real" experiment, but every now and then I'll try something slightly new, and if the results are ok then the thing becomes a gift. I did this recently with scarf-sized shawls--to see how they'd look. But I used a color that really didn't look so good on me. I decided I liked the small shawl, but the first one ended up as a present.

My husband did this thing with the avacado, upon rooting we planted it in a nice big planter with lots of sun in our little apt. bedroom. The little bugger got to almost two feet tall...before my cat decided to snack on it that is...better luck!

First of all; YARN IS NOT CLUTTER, never, ever!
I can't wait for the next installment of The Avocado Cam!

Oh Dear, I need a glass of water, I need to sit down, I really cannot take this much exciting Avocado Cam at once. Please, Sandy dear, give us a warning next time won't you? lol
And yarn...clutter? Hush your mouth, never. Secretly I'll bet your glad to see their clutter back in your uncluttered corners.

Avocados are so hard to propagate in the kitchen, I wonder how they do it in the wild!...
I spent the entire weekend de-cluttering (and then cleaning all the newly exposed surfaces.) It's exhausting, but it gives me a powerful incentive not to let things get so out-of-control next time. Seriously, I have sore muscles everywhere from all the lifting and bending and carrying. Yikes! Good luck getting the kids to put all their stuff back in their rooms. ;-)

I haven't tried the short row heel...but I figure "if it ain't broke don't fix it"...so I'll stick with my comfortable heel flap! LOL!!
Congrats on having the offspring back home!!

Your Avocado Cam is about as thrilling as MY Amaryllis Cam.
XOXO

The honeymoon is over, eh?

I really hear you about NOT experimenting with gift socks. Someone a while back asked me about doing that I said "BAD PLAN!" heh Sunlight on your pansies is a lovely sight. Surely it will help you overcome the feeling you get when you see baskets of kid stuff in every corner. :)

The best luck I've had with avocados is to just put the pit in a small zip lock bag with a tiny bit of water and zip it up until it sprouts. Then I potted them up and had healthy plants.
Good luck!

Whoa....the kids come back?

We have an avocado seed growing at our house. It has been growing well for about 8-9 months, and is about 2.5 feet tall. I hope yours does well! We have tried a couple times in the past. It doesn't always work well. However yours looks promising.

My stuff isn't clutter but my husband's stuff drives me NUTS. Hope the kids' stuff isn't as irritating. ;)
The new IK has a really good sock article, with instructions and diagrams for short row heels that make sense. I can never do the flap ones - I always end up with leftover sts that should have been picked up somewhere.
I have done avocados in moist sand, and it worked better for me than in water. It helps to have a seed starting heat tray, too... just be careful that Fig doesn't eat the plant!

Yay!
Yarn is never clutter. Your stuff is never clutter. Anything that is not yours or Fig's is clutter. And how full could it be when you've only got the two kids?
/runs like hell

I enjoyed my visit. Will have to come back to watch that avocado cam. I got a kick out of your kids moving home making clutter, I'm with you.... my stuff is never clutter (esp. the yarn) in spite of what my 18 year old tells me when she is trying to clean the living room!
