06.04.2007 :: Hmong Pa Ndau means beauty in my book!
A quick morning pop in to let you know the end of the story. (See previous post about a party and some dread) Turns out that the party was not that Saturday, but June 9th. So, the anxiety has a bit of time to grow and fester. Goody. That's always fun, she says dripping in sarcasm.
I did, however, walk downtown to the Arts Fest, which is like an upscale crafts show. Beverly is quite the artist town, with a famous art school and many art galleries. It's quite the place, but this is not meant to be an ad for you to move to Beverly, however if you DID, move to Beverly, we could start a kick ass knitting group and possibly even a great book club.
Yeah. Art show. So, I walked around the arts Fest, very festive indeed. And I spotted this booth with some items that were hand embroidered. I paused to admire, took one picture of her work and moved on.

When I got home, I couldn't stop thinking about how beautiful that bag was. It kind of haunted me in fact.
So, I went back and bought it. I will take more pictures later so you can appreciate along with me, the delicacy of the stitching.
The woman was quite old and from Laos. In fact, she did not speak great English. When she stood up off of her stool, she was not much taller than while sitting and probably only reached up to my elbow. I asked her if she did all of the stitching by machine or hand. Her phrase was, "by needle, by needle." and she proceeded to show me all of the stitches that she put in "by needle". Not machine. She did give me her business card (I can give any of you the info if you are interested) and I had the opportunity to then read up on Hmong Pa Ndau of which this is typical in style. It's all about history. The history of the lifestyle in Laos and also (not on this piece but on others she had there) about the fear and life during the Vietnam war and then of being refugees.
I'm sure you will agree with me as I say, AMAZING!

K, AMAZING! Well, I have some good news for you, my mom told me when she went to her 25th high school reunion...she was worried to until she got there. Yes she and a few other girls had put on weight, but she said the guys were unrecognizable! They looked far worse than any of the women...and we at least have the excuse of childbirth...what's their excuse? LOL

Absolutely beautiful. There is an excellent book about the Hmong called "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down." Primarily the story of an immigrant Hmong child with epilepsy, it also has a lot to say about their culture, and ours.

We have quite the Hmong community in my neck of the big ol' woods, too. In fact, there's a pretty good Hmong community right on my street! They are amazing people, amazing farmers, amazing needleworkers... simply amazing. They have done an incredible job of blending and assimilating to our culture while still retaining so much of their own (the two not always being in perfect harmony).
Anyway, I'm always in awe of that reverse applique work, too.

How beautiful. I'm glad you went back for it. Is it wrong that I had a sudden urge to stalk you? *L*
Lemme know when I need to yell at you for this weekend. ;^)
*hugs*

oh, and I forgot to say
"happy Monday!!"

That is a beautiful piece of work. I love that it was all done "by needle, by needle". Gorgeous.
Oh, and just to say, I feel your angst. Last July I had my 25th high school reunion to attend and five minutes before we were leaving to drive there, I lost my mind and totally regressed to high school angst. Thankfully I snapped out of it, we went, and it was fun. Not that I'm going to go to the next one, but it was fun enough.

Of course you needed that bag. It has chickens on it! :-)

The bag is gorgeous! We have a fair sized Hmong community here in mid Iowa. They are well known for their gorgeous needlearts!
Good luck with the party (eventually). I sympathize with you. I am of the same mind....

I don't know about moving to Beverly [is there a lot of farm land there?] but we are visiting Boston/Salem/Assonet in August for wedding festivities and birthday celebrations. Could you arrange an unseasonable lack of humidity and mosquitoes? Thanks!
It's so great you went back for the bag, you would have regretted it and thought about it for a long time. I wish we had a nice arts fest here, one that didn't include things like civil war "bonnets" sewn from neon colored polyester and lightbulbs painted with GA Bulldogs emblems.

How beautiful that stitching is! I have a couple of Hmong needlework items (a zippered change purse and a stuffed turtle). I love to look at the intricacy of the stitches.

So glad you went back and purchased the bag! Glad you had the means to do it.

Amazingly beautiful as well as piece of history. Glad you went back. How big is the bag?

Amazing, stunning, fantastic. I'm so glad you went back for it.

That IS amazing, and the work is stunning. I'm so glad you went back and got it.

That embroidery is absolutely spectacular. If I had seen it and not bought it, it would have haunted all my dreams.
The rhody photo in your last post is also quite something.
As for the party... do a Jan Brady, imagine them all in your underwear. (I totally, totally get the angst. Whenever I go to a high-school reunion I am suddenly 15 and massively insecure again. Luckily they usually conflict with Fiber Frolic.)
