06.16.2007 :: Curious incident of raccoons in the nightime

Estonian Pocket bag grows
The Estonian Pocket Bag is growing! What fun it is! The Vikkel braids seem to take a while to knit but they are worth the time, don't you think?
To answer blogless Lisa L in Dallas' question of whether Liidia's braid cast on rolls up, it does indeed roll. However, the point is moot on this piece because the bottom will be seamed together to make the bottom of the bag.
We serve all kinds of animals here, no discrimination:
That should be the sign on our door! Last night, erm, this morning 3 am, Derek woke me from a happy slumber, "come here, Mom, you have to see this!" I stumbled, bleary eyed down the stairs kind of dreading what I would see. You know, he's 20 years old and one never knows. He leads me to the front window and points out at the porch, where there is a stack of old nuts in the shells that I put out there for the squirrels (miracle that they sat overnight) and a little bowl of cat food for a cat we've been seeing around here. In fact, Derek got to read the tag on it's collar and his name is Houdini and lives in Salem, the next town, leading me to believe that he is lost. Next time we see him, I will get the phone number off of little Houdini's tag and call his owners but in the meantime, I will leave him a bit to eat. He's probably hungry as he goes about his little happy adventure while his owners worry sick about him.
Anyway. Where was I?
I look out the window and see a mama raccoon and 3 babies. I wish I could have taken a picture for you because honestly, they were the cutest things! (I know the peril of having a raccoon family around, but they really ARE cute!) Derek and I sat there, looking out the window mesmerized by these little things for about a 1/2 hour.
Good times, I tell ya! You don't how close I came to telling Derek to bug off too. It was only the fear of what could have been wrong that dragged me, pajama clad out of my warm bed! It really is the spontaneous moments, isn't it?

The Estonian braids are marvelous. Well worth the time indeed!

Funny story about the raccoons. We had a family of them living in a tree behind our house. The kids loved to watch them. They never really bothered us, thankfully :)

I've had a few cats who *should* have been named Houdini. I hope the poor little fellow makes it home!

We used to have a cat who lived outdoors, refusing ever to come in, so we had to leave food out for her. We saw all manner of critters enjoying the al fresco dining on our kitchen stoop, including possums, raccoons, and the occasional extremely brave blue jay.

Love the Vikkel braids, the sky, the rose, the rows.

Awww, my Gigi had raccoon visitors this week too, although she wasn't nearly as happy, you see, she has an outdoor fountain with some fish in it that a little masked bandit thought was an all you can eat sushi bar. LOL

How nice that Derek was coming to get you for something so fun! My son is 20 also, so I know that other feeling. Actually I know it better from my 22 year old, but that's a story for another day!

The bag is looking great! You should knit Estonian stuff all the time. :-)

When I was little, we would leave cat food out for the neighborhood stray, but then raccoons came along to eat it instead. They were cheeky, too! When the little plate was empty, they'd pick it up and bang on the screen door with it to let us know how unimpressed they were with the service. ;-)

Beautiful, all.

Don't you just LOVE weekends? Sigh...

Sandy, you do not need a sign on your door. Already, I am convinced, there is a back barn wall somewhere where strays and other wild things scratch your direction after, "For a good...".

There are days when I think green is my favorite color but then I see blue and white together it always just looks so perfect. What a beautiful bag that is.
I think I drove by that farm stand last weekend.

You're a better person than I am. Yes, we knew that, but still... I'm glad they were cute, but I hope they wander off because coons are nothing but trouble.

Btw, would you like a skunk? That's what was wandering around here last night. o.0

Love the rose!

Baby raccoons! They're so cute, but, yeah, you know it, babe. Not so cute when they're grown.

Anyway, looks like we are on the same wavelength Sky-Wise today. :)

I'll bet those raccoons were so cute!

Holy Garden Batman! I would kill for a garden like that. Of course living in the mountains, our growing season isnt very long, so most veggies are out of the question.

Have a beautiful Saturday :-)
