07.04.2007 :: Declaring my independence: from Shampoo! :OR: A Hair Odyssey

Shampoo, be gone!
~~~
A long, long time ago, when I was a fledgling adult, I started using a shampoo called Salon Selectives. It was in a red bottle and I miss it to this day. I used it for years and years and loved it. I loved how it made my hair feel and I loved the smell, which was a hint of peaches. Then one fateful day, it disappeared from store shelves. It was eventually replaced by the NEW version of Salon Selectives. And I hated it. Hated. It. This put me on a quest to find a new shampoo. Quite a quest it has been, too.
I am picky about how my hair feels. I like it to be soft. SOFT and shiny. Soft was always easy for me to achieve but the last years, soft hair is the holy grail, just out of reach.
My bathroom is filled with barely used bottles of moisturizing shampoos that make my hair feel like HAY. Hay is bad. Hay is not soft! Hair that is Hay is upsetting to me.
Then one day recently, I found a hair care line in my favorite product line (LOVE their face care products!) and I bought it with the promise that it would solve all of my hairs woes. I used the oil overnight, I used the shampoo that promised me healthy locks. It was the worst hair hay I had ever experienced. The conditioner was good but it had to put back all the softness and healthiness that the shampoo stripped out of it. Then I thought that I should give it a chance to work it's magic. I used it. And used it. And my hair dried out. Then along came WEN hair cleansing conditioners. I hesitated at the price because I had spent a bit of money on the Shear Spendor that was not a splendor.
This is the best money I have spent.
I have only used Wen Fig Cleasing conditioner (bought at QVC, click here for page) twice now. But I am sold. My hair after the first using was SOFT and shiny and bouncy and everything hair is supposed to be. My hair is as good as any hair can get that is due for a haircut.
Shampoo be gone. No more Hay Hair for me!
See?
And honestly? Chaz Dean is something to look at also!
How's your hair?
My all time favorite shampoos that have worked the best with my hair are the early 1970 formulation of Herbal Essence and a French formulation named Klorane from the later 70's. Not sure if the current Klorane is the same. For sure the new Herbal Essence isn't. I do buy Citre Shine when I can find it. It's not like the old stuff either, but is better than most with my hair.
Found this from Wendy's blog.
I have been very lucky with the Garnier Fruictis line. The I use their Moisturizing formula (i can't remember the name of it right now) shampoo/conditioner and then I put on the smoothing milk afterward (I have frizz problems) and it turns out lovely. SEXY hair. I only wash my hair about once a week (it doesn't get dirty very quickly) so I don't have problems overusing anything. But I think I got lucky with my hair.
I just use Herbal Essences, the kind for dry/damaged/coloured etc hair (even though my hair is none of the above). Tried the fruit kind for a while but that dried my hair out, so I went back to the herbal. It's fantastic. I leave the conditioner on for a few minutes. I also wash my hair every day and it's still fine.
I tried the Wen stuff and I have to say when I first started to use it, my hair looked great, then after a few washes with it my hair looked like a grease pit. I tried adjusting the amount to almost nothing and still greasy locks....I do not wash my hair every day either othewise, I like you, have hay for hair, and as you said, hay is bad. I eventually returned it to QVC. I am still in search of something.....I heard that Phyto was great (a bit pricy). I tried their leave-in conditioner and it seems to work....
I habitually have problems whenever I'm required to find a new shampoo and/or conditioner... I have allergies, and am allergic to most of them. :P I discovered that women's shelters will accept opened bottles of shampoo and conditioner. Yay! (It always seemed such a waste to throw out most of each bottle, but before finding the shelters, there was an awful lot to try to pawn off on friends!)
Yay for soft, shiny hair! I'm going the no-poo route, too. I never told you, did I? But for me, it's even more basic -- like Kathy, baking soda and vinegar. Awesome! (but not so very portable for traveling and such)
So shiny and lovely! I went no poo about a month and a half ago now and am loving it. Amazing how much healthier my hair is now.
Welcome to the no-poo world ;o) Your hair looks awesome!
Yes, I mourn the loss of Salon Selectives. Thank you for the tip on the new product!
Posted by: Sachi on 07.05.2007 AT 03:27 PM
Yep, you look shiny and soft, all right. :-)
I like some of the Lush haircare line very much, but if you like what you're using now (and obviously you do!) there's no real need to go trying other stuff.
Hey there, that's some super sexy hair going on. Dang girl, I am nearly blind from the sheen and shine of those silky tresses!
Posted by: Tracey on 07.05.2007 AT 11:42 AM
I'm using a shampoo/conditioner combo that I found at Trader Joe's, and am getting the soft/shiny thing I, too, love so.
At the moment, though, I have Pregnancy Hair, which is thick and lustrous and which will, I know, all fall out about four months or so after the babe is born. I will miss it when it goes.
ok girl, your hair is lovely, but chaz is kind of creepy. his stubble looks painted on. (and stubble is so 1990)
my hair is pretty easy to take care of and i don't pay much mind to what i wash it with. i am on a quest for the perfect conditioner though.
Ugh! There's nothing worse than hay hair!
I used to use Salon Selectives too, i'd never realized that it had vanished and been replaced. Hmmm.
I've been using Suave for about seven years and it works wonderfully.
of course you realize you have opened yourself up to a world of petting at Rhinebeck ......
Posted by: ann on 07.05.2007 AT 09:10 AM
I know EXACTLY what you mean about "hay" hair!! I started coloring my hair around age 30 and HATE that I ever started!! I will DEFINITELY look into getting some of the WEN products!!!
I'm not terribly picky about shampoo (I like Flex the best) but when it comes to the after stuff I have certain things I love, especially my Shaper hair spray. If they took that away I don't know what I'd do. Shave my head like Dave, I suppose.
There is nothing worse than loving a product and then the powers that be decide to do away with it. It's happened to me more times than I can count.
As far as hair goes - if you found something you love that makes you feel good about yourself (or your hair) then I say splurge! I spend more money on my hair than anything else (clothes, makeup, etc.) It's my one true expensive luxury and I'm not giving it up for anything!
I used to use salon selectives, too.
Tho, I will disagree and say it smelled like apples. & I liked the numbering system.
I do like Aveda's shampure, but I think our hair has diffrent issues. So, how's my hair... It's dirty today. heh.
my hair has a slightly different problem. keeping the ends soft and frizz free, while keeping the scalp portion ungreasy. the reason why it's so hard? i can sit on my hair. in fact, this morning in the shower, while i was c ombing my conditioner in, i looked down (i do it with my head down, to keep my conditioner-laden hair off my shoulders, or else i'll have a different problem! the stuff's so rich, it makes my back & shoulders break out) and realized my hair was past my knees when i did that. oy! and i can't truly comb it ou wet. it tangles t oo badly, and ends up so bad i can't hardly twist it up to put in my clips.
Hey y'all, for less bucks try a shampoo called "Hello Hydration" I forget what Brand it is (you can get it in any drugstore) but it's a miracle worker...
Just my .02
I share your love for the original Salon Selectives line. sigh. Glad you found something else that works for you.
Posted by: Nancy on 07.04.2007 AT 11:24 PM
Hmmm. May have to rethink what I'm currently using.
Posted by: Manise on 07.04.2007 AT 08:47 PM
How's my hair? Well, the chest hair is doing fine. Not missing the other too much. :) But I get to spin fiber, so it's the closet thing I get to playing with hair.
I use bumble & bumble, prior to that I used redkin but they changed up my favorite shampoo etc as well and I had a hard time finding it when I moved. So bumble and Bumble works pretty darn good, but it's pricey.
I am so glad you finally found something that works for you.
Ya know, I love QVC for their return policy, but hate them for that website.
Yeah, the Wen stuff is great but oh, so expensive! I get most of my hair-care products from Naturallycurly.com, and one of my favorite lines is "Jessicurl" because it really IS moisturizing. More of a moisturizing cleanser than a shampoo. Heck, for that matter, you can wash your hair with conditioner, too. (Also a handy trick for sweaters--leaves them soft, smelling nice, and you don't need to get it all rinsed out. Or, maybe that's just me....)
